Summary

Rev. Dr. Omar Williams challenges the congregation to stop 'doing church' and start 'being the church' by recognizing that their faith is portable and intended to be shared beyond the physical building to reach diverse communities.

Key points
  • The church is not a physical building (Greek 'ekklesia') but a corporate body of 'called-out ones' tasked with sharing the Gospel.
  • God is not confined to human structures; the 'heavens of heavens' cannot contain Him, and He resides within the hearts and minds of His people.
  • Persecution in the early church was the catalyst that pushed believers out of Jerusalem to fulfill the Great Commission in Judea and Samaria.
  • Evangelism is the personal responsibility of every believer, not just those with titles or positions, to be carried out in their unique spheres of influence.
  • Miracles and signs are not the primary purpose of church gatherings; rather, they are sovereign tools God uses most frequently 'outside the building' to confirm His Word to the world.

Commit to seeing your workplace, school, or neighborhood as your primary mission field this week by sharing your personal testimony with at least one person who does not know Christ.

Reflection questions
  1. In what ways have I mistakenly limited God's presence or activity to the four walls of the church building?
  2. How can I 'reframe' the current challenges or 'scatterings' in my life as opportunities to share the Gospel?
  3. Who are the 'Samaritans' in my life-those I might be overlooking or avoiding-who need to hear about the joy of Jesus?
  4. Am I waiting for a title or permission to be a witness, or am I ready to unleash my 'portable faith' today?

1:59Greetings to Shepherd Mother, Pastor

2:39I like it, girl. You know, let me quit.
2:41Uh
2:42uh Also, we've got uh Gabriel Sutherland
2:45returning to the house. God bless you.
2:48So good to see you,
2:50Gabby. And I just went over there and
2:52just did my best salute
2:55to the military man.
3:01Joshua.

3:07good to have you in the house. And to
3:08everybody who is here, God bless you. We
3:11salute you in the powerful name of Jesus
3:13Christ.
3:14Could you go with me in your Bibles to
3:17Acts chapter 8. We've got a packed house
3:18today, so if you have anything on the
3:22seat that doesn't need to be there,
3:24Elder Rose, I still have my folder. You
3:26could take them up, put them under the
3:27chair, that if anybody needs the space,
3:29they can be brought there.
3:31Uh likewise, if you have pocketbooks or
3:34anything on a on a chair, just please
3:36make it available. We still have the
3:38ushers trying to uh find seats.
3:42Acts chapter 8 and verse 1. I want to
3:45call your attention there.
3:47And I want to just allow the Lord to
3:50speak to us out of the volume of his
3:52words. Acts 8 and verse 1 reads like
3:54this, "Now Saul
3:56was consenting to his death, that is
3:58Stephen's death.
4:00At that time a great persecution arose
4:03against the church which was at
4:04Jerusalem.
4:06And they were all scattered throughout
4:08the regions of Judea and Samaria, except
4:11the apostles."
4:14I want to speak to us on this thought. I
4:15want to continue the series Everyone
4:18Evangelism. Today, I want to speak to us
4:19on the subject The Church Has Left the
4:22Building. The Church Has Left the
4:24Building. I was uh saying to the the
4:27first service
4:29that
4:30uh
4:31the Lord had placed inspired this
4:33thought to my mind
4:36from last year. So, this this topic was
4:38always on uh the schedule to be preached
4:42in the month of October in this series.
4:45And again, that's how God deals with me.
4:47There are some people he he'll speak to
4:49them the week of the night before. For
4:51me, he speaks to me in advance cuz he
4:54has made me a planning person.
4:57Amen?
4:58And however you are, that's all right.
5:01But he deals with me in this way. And
5:02so, it gives me this thought and of
5:05course, our current reality uh made me
5:08think to myself, my goodness, God, you
5:11are you blow my mind all the time. Even
5:14more so because I see how relevant this
5:17is to where we are right now.
5:20When we
5:22think of church, we
5:25often think of
5:28expansive edifices,
5:31padded pews,
5:33plush carpeted floors,
5:36lighting capacitors,
5:38and technological
5:40advancements.
5:42Yes, in short,
5:43we have a way of conflating the church
5:48with the building.
5:51But
5:53we need to be reminded that the church
5:57is not a building.
6:00The church, from the Greek term
6:03ekklesia,
6:05is the gathering, the body of the
6:08called-out ones. So, no one person is a
6:12church. No building is a church, but the
6:16church is a corporate body of people who
6:20have been called out by God.
6:24In the time when the New Testament was
6:25written, this word ecclesia described a
6:29council of people who were called out
6:33from a city,
6:35and they would meet together to rehearse
6:38laws and doctrines that of life for the
6:42city, and then they would go back out
6:44and communicate the same to the city.
6:47And I think that it's good for us to
6:51understand that the dimensions that are
6:54locked into this word ecclesia all
6:57appeal and are all relevant to the
7:01mission of the church. That we are the
7:03called-out ones, called together, that
7:06we might rehearse and understand our
7:09doctrines, that then we might go forth
7:13to ensure that the citizens of the
7:16places from which God has called us out,
7:19that they become knowledgeable of the
7:22doctrines whereby God wants the kingdom
7:25to operate.
7:28But when we live under the misconception
7:33that church is a building, that
7:37misunderstanding
7:39can lead to a limitation,
7:43a limitation
7:44of our purpose because we tend to think
7:48that God's presence, God's activity,
7:52God's ability, that those are confined
7:56to a physical space. And if we're out of
7:59that space, then I can't really
8:02represent God the way I should, and God
8:04can act in different places that God in
8:08the same way that God acts within a
8:10building. But however, I want to remind
8:13us, as God told Solomon, that God said,
8:17"I do not live in buildings. He says,
8:21"This beautiful temple that you have
8:23built me. Yes, you have used the latest
8:26technology. You have not spared any
8:28expenses or resources to build this
8:31temple. Thank you, meter. The sound is
8:33good. But, I want you to know, Solomon,
8:35that I am not so impressed with this
8:37temple because I can't be confined to
8:40those spaces." He said, "Hey, Solomon,
8:41come here. The heavens of heavens, in
8:44other words, the measureless expanses of
8:48the universe cannot even contain my
8:51presence, much more this building that
8:54you're trying to trap me in."
8:56God does not reside in buildings. No, he
9:00resides in the hearts and the minds of
9:04his people. And whenever we gather
9:07together, whenever we come together, you
9:09just let two or three of us gather on a
9:11certain matter touching the name of
9:13Jesus, and you will see God show up and
9:17act out wherever it is that we find
9:20ourselves.
9:23But, it's not just
9:25the contemporary church that has a
9:26misunderstanding of what the church
9:29really is, and therefore, how the church
9:32should live, and how the church should
9:34be, and how the church should carry out
9:36its mission. The first-century church
9:39also, that we read about in the book of
9:41Acts, also had some of these similar
9:44misunderstandings.
9:46They, for instance, believed that the
9:49gospel message was intended only for
9:53Jews, especially those who lived in
9:56Jerusalem.
9:57And so, when you read the book of Acts,
9:59the first six chapters, the first six
10:02chapters of the book of Acts, confines
10:05the message of the gospel to Jerusalem,
10:09to the building of the temple precinct.
10:11They would meet in Solomon's porch in
10:14the temple, or they would meet in houses
10:17where the church members lived. Those
10:21were their buildings, and they felt that
10:23that was sufficient to being the church.
10:27But, how many know that sometimes when
10:28we become so fascinated with the
10:31buildings, we end up doing church, but
10:34not really being the church?
10:36Yeah. And so, that's what was happening
10:38to them. They were They were getting so
10:40good at doing church, but not being the
10:42church until God had to allow a period
10:47of persecution led by a man named Saul
10:51to be brought against the church, and it
10:54began with the martyr of Stephen. He was
10:57the first Christian martyr, and he was
10:59stoned at the hand of Saul. And after
11:03that, Saul began to put everybody in
11:05prison. And he was They were beheading
11:07people and stoning people for the gospel
11:10message, and that was how
11:14the church was driven from its enclave
11:18in the city of Jerusalem. Fear gripped
11:20the hearts of believers. They felt like
11:23their church was coming to an end, but
11:26it wasn't church that was coming to an
11:27end. It was their idea of church that
11:30was coming to an end. But, don't you
11:32know that some things have to come to an
11:34end so that the will of God can really
11:37begin.
11:41God's purposes are not derailed by human
11:45evil or painful circumstances. In fact,
11:48God was using the very evil that they
11:51thought would destroy the church as the
11:54catalyst for the greatest expansion of
11:58the church of the living God. Dr. Gene
12:00Veith in his commentary on the Book of
12:03Acts, chapter 8, he makes this remark,
12:05quote, "One would think that persecution
12:09would be an obstacle to the church and
12:11to church growth when joining the church
12:14meant a death sentence. And yet, the age
12:17of persecution was the greatest period
12:21of church growth in history. The
12:24persecution, the affliction, the
12:26troubles drove them away from their
12:29buildings, but drove them right into the
12:32will of God. When they left the
12:35building, they began to really a
12:38accomplish God's will for their lives
12:41and for the life of the church.
12:43And I want to give this to us also that
12:45when we disconnect from the mentality
12:48that church is the building, then we can
12:51really begin to do the will of God the
12:55way that God intends for it to be done.
12:57Let's walk through how this happened.
12:59When When they left the building, first,
13:01if you're making notes, please keep your
13:03Bibles open.
13:04This is not going to get much louder
13:06than this. Today's not going to be the
13:08running sermon, so let's get in on this
13:10while it's good. Is that all right? Uh
13:12the the first thing that happened when
13:14they left the building is they
13:17effectuated divine mission. Everybody
13:19say they effectuated.
13:22Divine mission. They actively and
13:25intentionally set in motion what was
13:28God's mission all along. Here it is.
13:30Let's read Acts 8 and verse 1. Lay your
13:33eyes on the text with me.
13:35Now, Saul was consenting to his death.
13:37That's the death of Stephen.
13:38At that time, a great persecution arose
13:41against the church which was at
13:43Jerusalem. Hear this, last clause of the
13:46verse. They were all scattered
13:50through the regions of Judea
13:53and Samaria, except the apostles.
13:57Where have we heard a similar flow of
14:00words before?
14:02If it sounds familiar to you,
14:04it should be familiar because we heard
14:06these words when the mission was
14:09assigned to the church. The mission of
14:12the church was assigned in Acts 1 and
14:15verse 8.
14:16And the the ascended the the Christ that
14:19was getting ready to ascend, he told the
14:22church of his global mission in Acts 1
14:24and verse 8. He says, "But you will
14:27receive power
14:29when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and
14:32you will be my witnesses telling people
14:35about me everywhere in Jerusalem,
14:38throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the
14:41ends of the earth." Here it is, when the
14:44Lord gave the mission of the church, he
14:47told them, "My mission will begin in
14:50Jerusalem, but it can't stay there. It
14:53needs to expand to all Judea and then
14:56Samaria and then to go to the uttermost
14:58part of the earth." They sat in
15:00Jerusalem for 10 years enjoying each
15:04other's fellowship like sometimes we do
15:07in the body of Christ. We enjoy the air
15:09conditioning within the the physical
15:11building of the church and we just keep
15:13it here, but God is saying, "This is not
15:15where I want you to stay. I want you to
15:18come here, but this is only the
15:20beginning. I need you to go to all Judea
15:23and then to Samaria." And they sat on
15:25that it was when persecution came and
15:28drove them from their building that they
15:31moved beyond Jerusalem to Judea and to
15:33Samaria. It was WHAT GOD HAD ALWAYS
15:36WANTED.
15:38Am I talking to anybody here?
15:41The devil cannot destroy the plan of
15:43God. When your steps are ordered by God,
15:47when our church is ordered by God,
15:50whatever happens, God is going to use it
15:55as a catalyst to fulfill his divine
15:58mission for us in the first place.
16:03Brothers and sisters, so the mission was
16:05assigned in Acts 1 and verse 8.
16:08But the mission that was assigned in
16:10Acts 1 and verse 8 was only advanced in
16:13Acts 8 and verse 1.
16:15The mission assigned in Acts 1 and 8,
16:18and 10 years passed before they really
16:22began to advance the mission. They
16:24became so comfortable in their little
16:26church buildings that they forgot that
16:29just outside the doors there was the
16:31mission field of Judea and Samaria
16:34waiting to hear the gospel of the
16:36kingdom.
16:39Brothers and sisters, but when
16:41persecution drove them from their
16:43building in Jerusalem,
16:45they advanced the church's mission in
16:47Jerusalem, in Judea, in Samaria, and
16:50into the uttermost parts of the earth
16:54because persecution and affliction do
16:58not destroy the will of God, but if you
17:01trust God, whether it's in the church or
17:04your personal life, they will only drive
17:06you further and deeper into the will of
17:09God.
17:10So,
17:11when they left the building, they
17:13effectuated divine mission. Let's go to
17:15point number two. When the church left
17:17the building, they evangelized
17:20diverse multitudes.
17:22That's number two.
17:24When the church left the building, they
17:26evangelized
17:28diverse multitudes. Lay your eyes on the
17:30text with me. Let's go to verses 4 and
17:325 everybody.
17:34This is a church we believe in having
17:36our Bibles open during the preaching.
17:38Acts 8 verses 4 and 5. Let's read it. It
17:40says "Therefore
17:42those who were scattered went everywhere
17:46preaching the word.
17:48Then Philip went down to the city of
17:50Samaria and preached Christ to them."
17:55Oh, brothers and sisters, don't miss it.
17:57When the church left the building, they
18:01preached everywhere.
18:04These people who hitherto had only
18:07preached in Jerusalem now were preaching
18:10every They preached everywhere. They
18:12ran, but they did not run and hide. They
18:15ran and preached the gospel. They began
18:18to realize that their faith was not tied
18:21to a building or a city, but their faith
18:23was portable and could be proclaimed
18:26wherever it is that they found
18:27themselves.
18:29They preached everywhere. But, notice
18:31further, not only did they preach
18:32everywhere, everyone, each one preached
18:35the scriptures. Everybody say the
18:36scriptures.
18:37Not their own ideas, not psychology, not
18:41what they heard from Oprah Winfrey or
18:42whoever the pundits was, not Socrates,
18:44not Aristotle, but they preached the
18:47scriptures. Everybody say the
18:48scriptures. Now, this is one of the
18:50giftings that we all have in common. We
18:53may have diverse talents and diverse
18:55spiritual gifts, but everybody has the
18:58gift, the common gift of the Holy Ghost
19:01and the common gift of the word of God.
19:03We all have access to scripture, and
19:06what God is saying to us is, you've got
19:08to know it. You've got to learn it. How
19:10did they learn it? They learned it from
19:11sitting under the apostles' teaching so
19:13that when they got out there, they
19:15themselves were equipped to share the
19:18word of God everywhere they went.
19:21They preached the word of God in their
19:23unique circumstances. They knew how to
19:27package the word of God to the
19:29uniqueness of their reality. Can I tell
19:31you, brothers and sisters, that you,
19:33that I don't know the uniqueness of your
19:37circumstance like you know it. I can't
19:39be as effective a witness on your job as
19:43you can be. Push pause.
19:47So long as you've been living a life
19:50that reflects God,
19:52then that makes you an effective witness
19:55in your place, more effective than I
19:58could be because they know your life,
20:00but they don't know mine. You know the
20:02uniqueness of your situation, and you
20:04know how to take the word of God and
20:07package it to meet the needs of those
20:10whom God has placed around you.
20:13Everyone preach a scripture as each one
20:15preach somewhere. All of a sudden,
20:16everybody realized their personal
20:19responsibility to evangelize
20:22in their unique location. Hear me.
20:25Before Acts chapter 8, when you read
20:27Acts chapters 1 to 6, you see Peter,
20:30James, and John as a dominant figures.
20:33These are the apostles. If we impose the
20:35modern-day language, these are the
20:37pastors and the elders of the church.
20:40These are the church leaders with titles
20:42and position. We see them being the ones
20:44to advance the cause, but all of a
20:46sudden, when the church detaches from
20:49the mentality that we've got to only do
20:51church in the building, everyone woke up
20:54to their responsibility, and everybody
20:56began to proclaim the gospel, and then
20:58all of a sudden new names began to
21:00emerge in ministry. Stephen, Philip, the
21:04daughters of
21:06uh of Philip, Ananias, Barnabas, Paul,
21:09Luke, Timothy, Silas, Titus, Aquila and
21:13Priscilla, and these names began to
21:16emerge. Whose name in this church is God
21:19waiting to emerge in this moment? When
21:22you tell yourself, "I am tired of doing
21:25church. I will now be the church, and
21:27wherever I am, I will preach the word of
21:29God." Whose name is God getting ready to
21:33raise up in this church because you
21:35realize that you have a responsibility
21:37to share him wherever you go?
21:43Those of us who now hold titles and
21:45positions, can I tell you how we
21:46started?
21:47We started doing stuff at school.
21:51I never forget those days when we would
21:54meet for prayer, us apostolics on the
21:57campus of Herbert Morrison Technical
21:58High School would meet under a coconut
22:01tree and we weren't there to eat jelly.
22:03No, we were there to pray and to
22:05evangelize and to share the word of God
22:08until revival broke out on our on our
22:10campus. When I went to Sam Sharpe
22:12Teachers College, we formed we formed
22:14the we we became a part of the UCAM
22:16Ministry and revival and the Holy Ghost
22:19was breaking out. When I became a
22:21teacher, every year droves of my
22:23students were coming to church and
22:25getting baptized and getting Am I
22:26talking to ANYBODY HERE? BECAUSE I
22:28UNDERSTOOD THE MISSION. God didn't just
22:31bring me here because I sat around DOING
22:33NOTHING. I PREACHED THE WORD OF GOD. WHO
22:36IS GOD GETTING READY TO RAISE UP IF YOU
22:39REALIZE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CARRY HIM
22:42TO WHEREVER you are.
22:45Am I talking to anybody in this house?
22:48Brothers and sisters, what is God saying
22:50to you in this season? How is God
22:52wrestling with you? How What is he
22:54showing you? What What is he saying to
22:56you? What is he calling you to do? I beg
22:59of you, do not fight what God is calling
23:02you to do, BUT THROW YOURSELF INTO the
23:05will of God because if this church is
23:08going to grow and become all that is
23:09going to continue growing and become all
23:11that it can be, it will take more than
23:13those with titles.
23:38>> were not considered and looked upon with
23:40great dignity and favor, but God sent
23:43the word of God to them. Now, when the
23:44Bible says that we are fishers of men, I
23:46hear a lot of people giving the analogy
23:48of using fishing hooks to fish. But,
23:51here is a deal. When and when we talk
23:53when the Bible talk about fishing in the
23:55Bible, Jesus doesn't talk about using
23:56hooks. He talks about using nets. He
23:59says I you need to throw the net into
24:01the water and every kind is going to
24:04come into it. God wants the half-breeds.
24:06He wants the looked down. He want the
24:09looked over. He want the left out. HE
24:12WANT HE WANTS EVERYBODY. HE WANTS THE
24:14RICH. HE wants the poor. You know, when
24:16we when we fish with hooks, we can
24:18decide oh, if we can just get a few more
24:20businessmen into the church, maybe some
24:23of our our our ladies could find
24:26husbands of the the ilks. But, you know,
24:28a lot of women are married to
24:30businessmen and are taking licks into
24:32their skin. Am I talking to anybody? Am
24:34I talking to any Can I talk real in
24:36here? BUT, BUT LET'S CAST THE HOOK THIS
24:39CAST THE NET AND LET GOD BRING IN WHOM
24:42HE WANTS TO BRING IN AND LET GOD
24:43TRANSFORM THEM TO WHOM HE WANTS THEM TO
24:46BE.
24:49I KNOW IT SOUNDS CRASS, BUT THERE'S A
24:51lot of women who are subject to physical
24:53abuse at the hands of men who on a
24:56Monday they put on their tuxedos and
24:58their ties and they go off to work in
25:00their in their in their in their huge
25:02cars. They're they're Maybach, whatever
25:03it is, but they're abusive at home. And
25:05and and and I'm not saying that others
25:07can't be that way, but my point is let's
25:09not try to judge people's hearts by
25:12their pocketbooks. You preach THE
25:14GOSPEL. YOU SHARE IT WHERE YOU CAN AND
25:16LET GOD BE THE ONE TO BRING TWO PEOPLE
25:19into the house of the Lord.
25:20Yes.
25:22The gospel reached Samaria. The gospel
25:24reached an African.
25:26Acts 8:27-38, the Bible says that
25:29a man who was sent who was skinned
25:32was kissed by nature's son
25:35had much percentage high percentage of
25:38melanin in his body. Heard the gospel of
25:41Jesus Christ while he was on his way
25:43back to Ethiopia. Push pause for all
25:46those who have swallowed the lie that
25:48Christianity is a white man's religion.
25:50You need to read this. The gospel got to
25:53Africa before it got to England.
25:56If you know, you know. It got to Africa
25:59before England got Am I talking to
26:00anybody in this place? Uh and an African
26:03got the gospel and then an Italian got
26:06the gospel a Gentile in Acts chapter 10.
26:08The gospel reached the Gentiles in Acts
26:1011. It reached Asia and again to North
26:14Africa to Libya to Eastern Europe and
26:16then by Acts 12 through the 28, the
26:19gospel reached the Western Europe and
26:22which is why it came to America. Am I
26:23talking to anybody here? But the gospel
26:26began to reach diverse people groups
26:29because THE PEOPLE OF GOD LEFT THE
26:31BUILDING.
26:33OH, I FEEL the Holy Ghost here.
26:35I want to challenge us to believe that
26:38we can reach a diverse group for the
26:41Lord.
26:42Because when your classroom and in your
26:45college space, it's not just Caribbean
26:48nationals you have in there. You've got
26:50all kinds of people who are you who we
26:52are exposed to to whom we can share the
26:54gospel. We can use our expanded social
26:57media and the internet boom and our
27:00social media pages and YouTube and we
27:02can use these TO GET THE GOSPEL out to
27:05reach diverse multitudes for the Lord.
27:09Let me get ready to close. Point number
27:11three. So, the first thing when they
27:13left the building, they effectuated
27:15divine mission. When they left the
27:16building, they evangelized diverse
27:18multitudes. But lastly, when they left
27:20the building, they experienced
27:23dynamic miracles.
27:26Lay your eyes on the text again with me
27:27verses six and seven.
27:29And the multitudes
27:31with one accord
27:32headed headed the things spoken by
27:35Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles
27:37which he did.
27:39For unclean spirits, crying with a loud
27:42voice, came out of many who were
27:43possessed, and many who were paralyzed
27:46and lame were healed.
27:51When they left the building, they began
27:53to see dynamic miracles.
27:57Let Let's be clear about some things.
28:00When we read the book of Acts, sometimes
28:02we can, because it's such a fast-moving
28:04book,
28:05and because it is written in such a way,
28:07it it Acts does not provide a
28:09comprehensive history of the church.
28:12It provides a condensed history of the
28:16church. It's a theological history. It
28:19provides for us the precedences set by
28:22the early church. So, it gave us all of
28:25the important precedences that should be
28:28a part of modern church. Does that make
28:31sense to anybody?
28:32But it does not give us a day-by-day
28:35reckoning.
28:37So, sometimes we read the book of Acts,
28:38we can be tempted to think, "Oh my
28:39goodness, every time these people came
28:41together,
28:43uh Azelia, they were seeing miracles."
28:46Oh my goodness, and before long, we're
28:48like, "Man, I can't stay in this church.
28:50I need to be somewhere where every
28:51Sunday we come together, and every time
28:53we come together, we're seeing miracles,
28:55signs, and wonders."
28:57What did Jesus say about those who seek
29:00signs? He said, "An evil and adulterous
29:04generation seek after signs, but no sign
29:08shall be given to you." You must
29:10understand this. Jesus gave signs to
29:13those who did not believe. But with
29:16those who believed, who who had the word
29:19of God among them, HE TAUGHT THEM. HE
29:22TAUGHT HIS DISCIPLES. HE DID NOT WORK
29:24miracles for his disciples. He didn't
29:26work miracles around The one thing he
29:28did was to heal Simon's mother-in-law,
29:30but he didn't heal many of them. He
29:33didn't He didn't try to impress them
29:35with miracles. He taught them the word
29:37of God.
29:39And the disciples understood this. So,
29:41when they came together,
29:45I I said to someone some time ago
29:47because, you know, sometimes we can
29:49we can make it seem like there is a
29:50biblical model that is established about
29:52how our church services should be.
29:55So, I said to someone I said, "If you
29:56can find a a model
29:59of how church service is supposed to be
30:02structured
30:03or not structured,
30:05send it to me and I'll make sure that,
30:07you know, I comport comport myself
30:08accordingly.
30:10But until we find that,
30:13I want to go with the priority that I
30:15see in the book of Acts.
30:17Acts 2:42 tells me, "This is the
30:19priority of every worship service." Act
30:222:42 says, "They continued steadfastly."
30:25Everybody said steadfastly. That means
30:27every time they came together, these
30:30were the things that were expected to
30:32happen.
30:33The apostles' teaching,
30:35fellowship,
30:37breaking of bread, and prayers.
30:40That was a part of every worship
30:41service.
30:43So, did they have miracle signs and
30:44wonders? Of course, they did. But where
30:46were these happening? Where were these
30:48miracles, signs, and wonders happening?
30:50They were happening on the streets,
30:53outside the temple gates. The miracles
30:56were happening in the prison cells. The
30:58miracles were happening on streets lined
31:00with sick people. The miracles were
31:02happening in the town squares. The
31:04miracles were happening in the
31:05marketplace. In other words, the point
31:07I'm trying to make is the miracles,
31:08signs, and wonders were happening
31:10outside the building. It was happening
31:13where people needed the miracles to
31:15believe God. Am I talking to anybody
31:17here? Now, we trying to run up and down
31:19in church, and we're trying so hard to
31:21have signs and wonders that we are I
31:24mean, we are binding the dog, the cat.
31:27We're casting out demons of the people
31:29who are full of the Holy Ghost, and then
31:30talking about miracles, signs, and
31:31wonders happening around here. The devil
31:33is A LIAR. THE SIGN THAT THE CHURCH IS
31:35CONNECTED to God, AND THAT THE CHURCH IS
31:38POWERFUL IS NOT HOW MANY MIRACLES,
31:40SIGNS, AND WONDERS CAN HAPPEN. It's how
31:42we love each other. Am I talking TO
31:44ANYBODY? BY THIS SHALL ALL PEOPLE KNOW
31:47THAT YOU ARE MY DISCIPLES IF YOU'VE GOT
31:49LOVE ONE FOR ANOTHER.
31:52I WANT US TO GET IT RIGHT.
31:56MIRACLES, SIGNS, and wonders will
31:58happen. GOD WILL GIVE THE MIRACLES,
32:00SIGNS, and wonders when they are needed,
32:03but they are NOT WHAT DEFINES THE power
32:06and the effectiveness OF THE CHURCH OF
32:08GOD.
32:09IT IS HOW MUCH YOU LOVE PEOPLE, your
32:12long-suffering gentleness goodness
32:14faithfulness. These are the measuring
32:17stick for the maturity of our church.
32:23So, God, when he got ready, he gave them
32:25the miracles, signs, and wonders cuz you
32:26can't do any miracle by Have you ever
32:29laid hands on somebody, and they got
32:31healed?
32:33Anybody?
32:34I have. I've laid hands on people, and
32:36they got healed. But, can I tell you
32:37what has also happened? I HAVE LAID
32:39HANDS ON PEOPLE AFTER DAYS OF FASTING,
32:42AND THEY STILL DIED.
32:43THE POINT I'M TRYING to make is I don't
32:45control the miracles, SIGNS, AND
32:47WONDERS. GOD HAS SOVEREIGN CONTROL over
32:50those things. What I have control over
32:52is preaching and teaching AND LIVING THE
32:54WORD OF GOD, AND LET GOD GIVE THE
32:57MIRACLES, SIGNS, AND WONDERS where he
32:59sees fit according to his sovereign
33:01will.
33:03So, when they went out in the streets,
33:05God gave them miracles, signs, and
33:07wonders. Demons were being cast out in
33:09Samaria, in Cyprus, in Macedonia, in
33:14Ephesus. Demons At one point in Ephesus
33:17in Acts 19, a whole clan of necromancers
33:21and diviners and spiritists were exposed
33:24and demons were cast out of them and
33:27they ran to Christ BURNING THEIR BLACK
33:29MAGIC BOOKS because when the CHURCH LEFT
33:32THE BUILDING, THEY exposed the
33:34principalities and the POWERS AND THE
33:36DARK SPIRITS AND THEY HAD TO CRY OUT TO
33:38GOD AND PEOPLE WERE DELIVERED AND THE
33:40HOLY GHOST CAME ON PEOPLE. AM I TALKING
33:42to anybody here? Yeah, when the church
33:44left the building, spirits were cast
33:46out. When the church left the building,
33:49sicknesses were cured. Sicknesses were
33:50cured on the streets in Samaria, on a
33:53street called straight in and in in
33:55Damascus, sicknesses were healed in
33:57Lydda when uh Peter uh caused Aeneas to
34:01be healed and raised Dorcas from the
34:03dead. Sicknesses were healed on the
34:05streets of Lystra. Sicknesses were
34:07healed in Ephesus when God gave Paul
34:10unusual miracles until handkerchiefs
34:12were put on Paul's body and then taken
34:14to the sick. Sicknesses were healed in
34:17uh on right on the seashore in Malta
34:19when Paul laid his hand on the father of
34:22Publius and dys- dysentery was healed
34:25out of his body and many sick folks
34:27found healing. When the church left the
34:29building, sinners were converted. In
34:31Samaria, there was a Holy Ghost revival.
34:34In Cornelius's house, there was a Holy
34:36Ghost revival. In Ephesus, there was a
34:38Holy Ghost revival BECAUSE WHEN WE LEAVE
34:40THE BUILDING, spirits will be cast out.
34:43Sicknesses will be cured. Sinners will
34:44be converted. When we leave the
34:46building, WE WILL SEE GOD WORK SOME
34:49WONDERS AND SIGNS EVEN MORE THAN IF WE
34:52STAYING HERE trying to count how many
34:54people got healed.
35:00I'm UPC. I'm a card-bearing member of
35:02the United Pentecostal Church.
35:04But the one thing that I wish we would
35:06do differently is stop being so hung up
35:08on numbers. Everywhere ministers go,
35:11we're trying to Oh, how many people got
35:12healed? And people now are making up all
35:15these things about miracles and
35:16manufacturing some healings so that they
35:19can send it to some kind of report. Am I
35:21talking to anybody IN THIS HOUSE? THAT'S
35:22NOT HOW GOD WORKS. LET GOD BE GOD. LET
35:26GOD BE GLORIFIED. WHEN GOD DOES HIS
35:28THING, IT'S NOT FOR YOUR GLORY OR MY
35:31GLORY. IT'S SO THAT HIS NAME BE
35:32GLORIFIED.
35:34OH GOD, I FEEL the Holy Ghost helping me
35:36here.
35:38Spirits cast out.
35:40Sicknesses cured. Sinners converted.
35:43Spiritual confirmation. When they left
35:45the building, Mark puts it this way in
35:47Mark 16:20, and they went and preached
35:49everywhere, the Lord working with them
35:52and confirming the word with the
35:54accompanying signs. God was the one that
35:57gave them spiritual confirmation. God
36:00made angels visit them out there on the
36:02streets. God gave them clear
36:04instructions as to where to go when they
36:06were on the streets. God gave them
36:08supernatural strength to outrun royal
36:10stallions in the case of Philip when
36:12they were on the street. God caught
36:14Philip away to another location when
36:16they left the building. God gave
36:18supernatural peace in the middle of the
36:20storm when the church left the building.
36:23I want to say to us here that if you
36:24want to see God work, if we want to
36:26really see God work, if we want to
36:28effectuate divine mission, if we want to
36:31evangelize diverse multitudes, if we
36:33want to experience dynamic miracles,
36:36we've got to disconnect FROM THE IDEA
36:38THAT church is only taking place in here
36:41and realize that wherever it is that you
36:43go, God wants to work right there. He
36:45wants you to lay be bold enough to lay
36:47hands on somebody in your classroom. And
36:50let me CAN I BORROW FROM MARK BROWN?
36:52TELL THEM TYLENOL and and and and
36:54whatever. Tylenol and Advil. Have I not
36:57What in the name OF JESUS? AM I TALKING
37:00TO ANYBODY HERE? YES, LET HIM USE YOU
37:03WHERE YOU ARE.
37:07LET ME CLOSE. Let me close.
37:09Go to verse eight with me. Acts eight
37:11and verse eight.
37:13Here's what it says.
37:15When the church left the building,
37:16hallelujah.
37:18When they effectuated divine mission.
37:21When they evangelized the diverse
37:23multitudes. When they experienced
37:25dynamic miracles, here is HOW IT
37:27CONCLUDES. THERE
37:29WAS GREAT JOY IN THE CITY.
37:33OH, WHAT THE DEVIL meant for evil
37:36stirred the nest. And when the eagles
37:39flew out and began to preach AND
37:41PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL OF JESUS. And when
37:43the Lord worked with them and healed
37:46people and raised the dead. HERE'S WHAT
37:48HAPPENED. THERE WAS GREAT JOY IN THE
37:51CITY.
37:53Can America use a little more joy right
37:55now?
37:56I was saying in the first service, we
37:57have never been as polarized as we are
37:59in this country.
38:01Can Can Can Can the community of Miami
38:03Gardens use more joy right now? CAN CAN
38:05CAN YOUR HOUSE USE MORE JOY? CAN CAN
38:08YOUR SCHOOL use a little more joy? It is
38:11not GOING TO COME BY PSYCHOLOGIZING or
38:14or trying to agree on ideologies or
38:17giving reparations. No, that's not how
38:19the joy is going to come. If anything,
38:21some of those are going to cause more
38:22confusion. What is going to bring joy to
38:24the world is when we tell them about the
38:26Jesus, the savior, who was born over
38:292,000 years ago. And the angels said,
38:32"Hark, the herald angels sing glory in
38:34the highest. To you HAS COME JOY AND
38:37GOODWILL TO ALL PEOPLE." THEY NEED TO
38:39HEAR ABOUT JESUS.
38:43HALLELUJAH.
38:44HALLELUJAH. That's where the joy comes.
38:48So, what must we do? Let me close. I got
38:50three things I want to suggest to us to
38:51do as we close.
38:53Number one, I want us to reframe our
38:56scattering.
38:58Reframe
38:59our scattering. Yes.
39:01We've been scattered from our
39:03normal place of worship, our sanctuary.
39:07And in your life, maybe stuff that is
39:09happening has kind of pushed you into a
39:11place of discomfort, anxiety. But I'm
39:15inviting you today under the power of
39:17the word of God to reframe the way you
39:21see your scattering. Understand this,
39:24that whatever it is, whatever building
39:26it is, whether it's a church building or
39:28whatever structure you were relying on
39:30and thinking that God only works within
39:32that framework, I want to TELL YOU NOW
39:35THAT WHEN GOD PUSHES YOU OUT, HE WANTS
39:37YOU TO SHARE THE gospel wherever he has
39:40pushed you, WHEREVER YOU FIND YOURSELF.
39:43IF YOU'RE UNDER THE HAND OF GOD, HE
39:45STILL HAS CONTROL AND JURISDICTION. OPEN
39:48UP YOUR MOUTH WITH CONFIDENCE AND LET
39:50THE WORLD KNOW THAT YOU SERVE A RISEN
39:52SAVIOR. HE'S IN THE world today.
39:55Hallelujah.
39:57Hallelujah. Reframe our scattering.
40:00Number two, I want us to unleash our
40:03portable faith. Everybody say portable.
40:05Yeah. That means it can go wherever I
40:09go. Yes, I can take this faith with me.
40:11This is not a faith that is only strong
40:13on a Sunday morning. My faith is strong
40:15on a Monday when I'm walking the mall.
40:17My faith is strong on a Tuesday when I
40:20sit in meetings. My faith is strong on a
40:22Monday when I sit to study. Am I talking
40:24to anybody here? MY FAITH IS STRONG WHEN
40:26I'M IN THE CLASSROOM IN THE SCHOOL OR
40:27WHEREVER IT IS YOU FIND YOURSELF, YOU'VE
40:29GOT A PORTABLE FAITH THAT CAN MAKE A
40:31DIFFERENCE WHEREVER YOU GO.
40:34Somebody needs to hear your testimony.
40:38People have been clamoring, "Pastor,
40:39bring back testimony service. Don't rob
40:41the people of their testimony." The
40:43Bible said, "Out of by your testimony
40:46and the blood of the lamb, you overcome
40:48the evil one." Yes, true.
40:50But do you think they were having
40:51testimony services in church in the
40:53apostles' time? No. They were sharing
40:55their testimony in the prison hall. They
40:57were sharing their testimony until the
40:59Sanhedrin had to get tired of them.
41:01Share your testimony. THERE'S SOMEBODY
41:03AT THE WATER COOLER on your job. There's
41:04somebody in the cafeteria, the
41:06lunchroom, who is depressed and sad
41:08ABOUT TO COMMIT SUICIDE. AND IF THEY
41:10COULD HEAR YOUR TESTIMONY, IT COULD MAKE
41:12MORE OF A DIFFERENCE THERE THAN YOU
41:14SHARING IT IN CHURCH.
41:18WITH people who already KNOW GOD.
41:21SHARE IT WITH SOMEBODY WHO DON'T KNOW
41:24GOD. DETERMINE THIS WEEK I WILL BE A
41:27PHILIP THAT WILL BRING THE WORD OF GOD
41:29AND MY TESTIMONY to somebody who does
41:31not yet know him.
41:34My last point, refrain our scattering
41:37unleash our portable faith.
41:39Expect the joy of the Lord.
41:43Oh, I feel the Holy Ghost in here. When
41:45we faithfully proclaim Christ, joy is
41:48the result. Transforming joy. It didn't
41:51just say simple joy, it says there was
41:53great joy in the city. When you proclaim
41:57Christ, it brings a joy to your heart.
42:00When you find your purpose in ministry,
42:02IT BRINGS A JOY TO YOUR HEART. WHEN YOU
42:06PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL TO SOMEBODY in need
42:08and watch their life change, IT BRINGS A
42:10JOY TO YOUR HEART. BUT IT ALL IT also
42:13brings a joy to their heart and to their
42:15lives and to their family and to your
42:18workplace and to your HOME SPACE. BE THE
42:21PERSON who allow yourself this week to
42:24experience
42:26the joy
42:27of the Lord. I'm through.
42:30I will not invite anyone to the altar.
42:31Hallelujah.
42:33If there's somebody in here who you
42:35don't yet have the power of the Holy
42:36Ghost.
42:38Because you can't do any of this without
42:40the power of the Holy Ghost.
42:42It is the Holy Ghost that gives the
42:43power to be witnesses beyond mere words.
42:46Am I talking to anybody in here?
42:48Hallelujah. You shall receive power when
42:50the Holy Ghost come and then you shall
42:52be witnesses on to me. YOU CAN SELL
42:54something
42:56that you yourself don't have.
43:00So, if you want the Holy Ghost, this
43:01altar is open for you today. You can
43:03come.
43:04Or you can pray wherever you are. God
43:05can fill you with the Holy Ghost right
43:07in your seat.
43:08But, I want to invite all of us right
43:09now
43:11to bow our heads right where we are.
43:13I believe God is talking to his church.
43:19God gave me this word over a year ago
43:23and I didn't realize how relevant this
43:25word would be
43:27until I saw what happened to us. And
43:30that's not the only thing. There's a lot
43:32of us in here who are being scattered
43:35from some ideas that we have held strong
43:37to and felt like this this was this this
43:40is THE THE THE BACKBONE OF MY WALK with
43:42God and God is saying, "Think again.
43:45I am the backbone of your walk with me."
43:49Hey, God. Thank you. Hallelujah.
43:52Hallelujah. I want to invite you right
43:54now just to
43:56join me in prayer. The praise team is
43:57going to come in a little bit and help
43:58me sing,
44:00"Don't let me leave behind an unfinished
44:02task."
44:03But, while they're gearing up to come, I
44:05want us to pray right where we are.
44:08What has God been saying to you?
44:12How has God been challenging you?
44:15How has he been calling you
44:19to be one of those who will proclaim the
44:21gospel? You need no title, no office, no
44:23marquee on the door.
44:25You just need the power of the Holy
44:27Ghost and the power of the word and the
44:28authority of the name of Jesus and go
44:30forth
44:32and tell the world about him.
44:35What has he been calling you to do?
44:37Have you been resisting?
44:39Or have you surrendered to him?
44:42Let's bow our heads together right now
44:44and talk to the Lord.
44:47Who calls us Father, you can talk to him
44:49quietly where you are in your hearts. A
44:51reflective prayer. If you need the Holy
44:52Ghost, you can come.
44:54I'll pray. Father, in the name of Jesus.
44:57We are so thankful to you today that
45:00you always
45:02have a word for your people.
45:05A word in due season.
45:07You never give this church leftover
45:10stew.
45:11But there is always something fresh and
45:13hot off the press that you have for your
45:16church.
45:17And today you have spoken to us.
45:20And God, our hearts are burning within
45:22us.
45:27Jesus, we feel your presence. We feel
45:29your call.
45:31I pray for surrendered hearts and
45:32submitted minds right now.
45:35I pray for focused eyes just to lock in
45:38with you and in the name of Jesus begin
45:41to answer the calling of the Lord and to
45:43let you be the one to raise them up.
45:46Lord, I pray that you'll give boldness
45:48and utterance to your people that they
45:50might be ready and willing, that we
45:52might be ready and willing and able to
45:54proclaim and declare the word of God
45:57that is sufficient to save everybody and
46:00efficient in saving those who come to
46:02repentance.
46:04Oh, I pray right now in the name of
46:05Jesus that you loose us from the
46:07shackles of fear and doubt. Ha ko to
46:11sheba.
46:12And even shame and embarrassment about
46:14the name of Jesus and about our faith. I
46:17pray in the name of the Lord that you'll
46:20give us the boldness and the courage.
46:21Awaken within us a flame of desire and
46:24the passion to take the name of Jesus
46:27with us
46:28everywhere it is that we go.
46:31That we can make a difference in the
46:33spaces that you put us, the doors you've
46:35opened for us. May we preach the word of
46:37God there because there is somebody
46:39there who may never walk into a church
46:41building. They may never come here, but
46:43they can know about you right where they
46:45are. You can work in their life right
46:47where you are. Many who got the Holy
46:49Ghost in the book of Acts never ever saw
46:51Jerusalem, but they did not need
46:53Jerusalem to be saved. They didn't need
46:55a temple to be saved. They needed the
46:56word and somebody who was willing to
46:58preach it.
47:00So, I pray now, Lord, that you will
47:02Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Awaken the
47:06fervor within our hearts to preach the
47:09gospel of Jesus Christ. To preach the
47:12unadulterated gospel of the Lord without
47:14fear, without favor, and allow God to
47:17work in our lives and in the lives of
47:20the people
47:21that you allow us to engage with. Thank
47:23you now, Lord.
47:25Thank you now. Praise singers, can you
47:26come and just help me?
47:28Hallelujah.
47:30Hallelujah. If I carry the gospel.
47:34Thank you, Lord.
47:37Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Lord.
47:40Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Lord. Thank
47:42you, Lord. Whatever you want to do,
47:43stand, sit, doesn't matter, but I want
47:46those hearts to be attuned with God and
47:49talking to God and asking God, "How can
47:53I not leave behind a task that you
47:57desire for me to accomplish in this
47:59world while I am here?"
48:02Hallelujah.
48:04Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus.
48:05Praise singers,
48:07you can start.
48:09Hallelujah.
48:12Yes Lord.
48:16Thank you, Jesus.
48:20Yes Lord.
48:24If I can
48:27read the gospel
48:31to the lost
48:35near or far.
48:38I won't stand
48:42empty-handed
48:45at God's
48:49judgment bar.
48:52For I did
48:55not relax
48:58until I finished
49:02my task.
49:05So I won't leave
49:09behind
49:13an unfinished
49:17task.
49:19You have run.
49:22You've run the race.
49:26You have kept
49:29the
49:30faith.
49:33These words I long
49:37to hear
49:39my savior say.
49:43Oh yes.
49:46And when my life
49:49on earth is past,
49:52there's just one thing,
49:56dear Lord,
49:59I don't let me leave
50:03behind
50:07an
50:08unfinished
50:10task.
50:12Verse two,
50:13when I've come
50:16to the crossing at rapture or at death,
50:19and I leave
50:22here behind
50:25all my earthly
50:28earthly
50:32Oh, but this
50:34but this I won't mind.
50:38For it would make Yes, Lord. Hallelujah.
50:41My heart glad. Hoshana Raba.
50:45If I should leave
50:48all that I have,
50:50but I don't leave
50:54behind
50:58an unfinished task.
51:02You have run
51:04You have run
51:06You have run the race.
51:10You have kept
51:13the faith.
51:16These words I long
51:20to hear
51:22my savior say.
51:27Oh, yes. And when my life
51:31Yes, Lord. on earth is passed,
51:34there's just one thing,
51:37dear Lord, I ask.
51:41Don't let me leave
51:45behind
51:48an unfinished task.
51:52Yes, come on, sing it one more time. You
51:53have run You have run Yes, sir. You have
51:57run the race.
52:00You have kept
52:03the faith.
52:06These words I long
52:10to hear
52:12my savior say.
52:18And when my life
52:21on earth is passed,
52:24there's just thing
52:27dear Lord I
52:30ask, don't let me leave
52:34behind
52:38an
52:39unfinished
52:41task.
52:45Lord, thank you Jesus.
52:48You have spoken to us today. We are
52:50challenged.
52:53We do not want to leave behind an
52:55unfinished task.
52:57But we do want to hear you say at the
52:58judgement seat of Christ,
53:00you have run the race, you have kept the
53:03faith.
53:04Well done good and faithful servant,
53:07enter thou into the joy of the Lord.
53:10That's what we want to hear you say.
53:13Give us the strength to do your will.
53:15Give us the focus to do your will. Give
53:18us the resilience to do your will. Give
53:20us unwavering faith to do your will.
53:25This is our prayer in this house today.
53:27As we leave this place, but never from
53:31your presence. Go with us Lord to our
53:33several places of residence.
53:36And awaken within us our shower.
53:39Awaken within us Lord a fresh fire. A
53:41fresh fire to do the will and the work
53:44of God.
53:45Wherever we find ourselves, keep your
53:47people safe, bless your people, resolve
53:49and work out circumstances in their
53:51lives this week.
53:52And broken relationships this week. Open
53:55doors of provision and opportunity this
53:57week. Somebody who needs a job, open a
53:59door for them this week. Somebody who
54:01needs tuition, open a door for them this
54:03week. Do it Lord. Somebody who needs a
54:05Holy Ghost, who needs healing, who needs
54:07provision, do it for them this week Lord
54:10we pray.
54:11In the power of the name of Jesus.
54:13Hallelujah.
54:14Why don't you raise that right hand to
54:16the Lord right now?
54:18The Lord bless you and keep you.
54:21Make his face to shine upon you. The
54:23Lord be gracious unto you. The Lord lift
54:26up his countenance upon you and give you
54:29his peace. Peace. Peace. Go in the peace
54:32of the Lord. We love you. Look forward
