Summary

In this teaching on Psalm 32, Rev. Dr. Omar Williams explores the journey from the crushing weight of hidden sin to the liberating joy of God's forgiveness, urging believers to move from repentance into a life of intimate guidance and growth.

Key points
  • True repentance involves acknowledging the depth of sin, including rebellion (transgression), crooked character (iniquity), and hypocrisy (guile).
  • Unconfessed sin acts as a crushing psychological and physical burden, but God uses this conviction as a 'tough grace' to drive us back to Him.
  • Forgiveness in Christ means our sins are lifted off us, covered by His blood, and struck from the eternal ledger.
  • God expects spiritual growth after forgiveness, moving from being controlled by external discipline (bit and bridle) to being guided by intimacy (His eye).
  • The life of the forgiven should be characterized by an expression of gratitude, specifically a joy and freedom that others can clearly see.

Life application

Identify one 'secret' area of struggle or guilt this week and confess it fully to God, then consciously choose to 'walk down a different street' by removing a specific temptation or habit that leads back to that sin.

Reflection questions
  1. David identifies 'iniquity' as a crookedness of character rather than just a one-off mistake. What 'crooked ways' in your own nature do you need to ask God to straighten out?
  2. In what ways have you experienced God's 'tough grace' or a heavy hand of conviction, and how did that lead you toward restoration?
  3. What does it mean to you personally that God 'does not count' your sins against you once they are forgiven?
  4. Are you currently being guided by God's 'eye' (intimacy and sensitivity to the Spirit) or do you feel like you are being led by a 'bit and bridle' (circumstances and trials)?

0:00Want to call your attention today to
0:02Psalm chapter 32.
0:05Psalm chapter 32 to my darling wife.
0:08Love you. God bless you.
0:10Uh Psalm 32.
0:12I'll read verse one in your hearing.
0:15Blessed is he
0:18whose transgression is forgiven,
0:21whose sin is covered. As we continue our
0:25Summer in the Psalms series, I want to
0:26speak to us today on this thought, the
0:30forgiven.
0:32The forgiven. The forgiven. Allow me
0:35just to teach the word of the Lord
0:38today.
0:40The forgiven.
0:42He had lived
0:44with a deep, dark secret for
0:47years.
0:49An affair with another man's wife
0:52that resulted in a pregnancy.
0:56He tried to deceive the man into
0:59sleeping with his wife so it would seem
1:03that he had fathered the child.
1:06When that deception failed, he ordered
1:11the man's execution
1:13using him as the courier of the letter
1:17that sealed his own fate.
1:21When the man died, he married the man's
1:23widow
1:25quickly
1:26so that when the child was born
1:30they could argue
1:31this is a child that came a few months
1:33early.
1:37There were people that suspected. Yes,
1:39there were rumors around the palace,
1:41rumors around the kingdom, but but very
1:44soon those rumors died down and people
1:47moved on and it seemed the man had
1:51successfully hidden his sin.
1:54He was still the king.
1:56He was still presiding over the great
1:58feast of Israel. He was still presiding
2:01over the worship services. He was still
2:03the man.
2:04But nobody knew the deep dark secret he
2:08was hiding.
2:10But he soon discovered that you cannot
2:13hide sins from God.
2:16Beware, your sins shall find you out.
2:23God confronted him through the prophet
2:25Nathan.
2:27And the gravity of the confrontation was
2:29of such that the weight of his sins
2:33began to dawn on him. You see, in the
2:36theocratic laws of Israel, God did not
2:41accept any kind of animal sacrifice for
2:45the sins of adultery
2:47and the sin of murder.
2:50Because you see, in Leviticus chapter 20
2:52and verse 10 and Leviticus chapter 24
2:55and verse 17, it was written by God
2:59that such sins would have no sacrifice
3:03only the death of the offender
3:07would pay for those sins.
3:10He quickly went to God and he said, "YOU
3:12DO NOT REQUIRE ANY OFFERING FOR this
3:15sin, ELSE I WOULD GIVE IT TO YOU."
3:18There is no sin There is no offering
3:21that he could give to God to atone for
3:23the sin, but while he remembered what
3:25the law said, he also remembered
3:28something else about the giver of the
3:30law.
3:31He remembered that when God met Moses,
3:33God presented himself to Moses in Exodus
3:3624 34 verses 6 to 7 in this way, quote,
3:41"I am the Lord God, merciful and
3:44gracious, long suffering and abounding
3:47in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for
3:50thousand, forgiving iniquity and
3:53transgression and sin." He remembered
3:57that the same God of the law was the
3:59same God of mercy and grace and
4:04forgiveness. So, what did he do? With a
4:06broken spirit and a contrite heart in
4:09repentance, he threw himself upon the
4:13mercies of God shouting in prayer, "Have
4:16mercy upon me, O God, according to the
4:19loving your loving kindness, according
4:21to the multitude of your tender mercies,
4:25blot out my transgressions."
4:30His repentance was sincere. His tears
4:33were genuine. He fell on his face with
4:35fasting and prayer and sackcloth before
4:38the Lord because you see, you might be
4:40able to fool people, but you CAN'T FOOL
4:42GOD.
4:43GOD knows when confession is not
4:46genuine, when the tears are fake and
4:49phony. He knows emotionalism
4:52from repentance.
4:54In tender mercies, God forgave him of
4:57his sins and immediately restored him to
5:00a joyful fellowship with God. But here
5:04is the question that I want to ask US
5:05NOW, WHAT DOES THE forgiven do?
5:09When you have been forgiven by God, what
5:13do you do? Well, David documented his
5:16experience
5:18in Psalm chapter 32.
5:20Psalm 32, the second of seven
5:23penitential Psalms,
5:25uh coming on the heels of Psalm chapter
5:276. These These penitential Psalms
5:30express deep contrition, confession, and
5:34repentance for sins. But But But Psalm
5:3732 is just a little bit different, you
5:38see, because when Nathan confronted
5:41David, he prayed in deep repentance to
5:46God as documented in Psalm chapter 51.
5:50Psalm 51 is where David cried out in
5:53repentance. Psalm 51 was where he shed
5:56the tears before God. Psalm 51 was where
5:59he lamented and fasted and cried out to
6:02God. Now, Psalm 32 is the sequel.
6:06Psalm 32 was written after Psalm 51 in
6:11the historical order. And in this Psalm
6:15that is labeled Maskil, the Maskil of
6:18David, you'll see it in the prescript of
6:21the Psalm, the Maskil of David. m a s c
6:24h i l. It It It It is a Psalm that is
6:29both reflective and instructional. On
6:32the one hand, it is reflective because
6:34this Psalm, again, is not the prayer for
6:38forgiveness and repentance that's Psalm
6:4051. But in this Psalm, David reflects on
6:44his experience, the experience of the
6:47sin, the experience of the guilt for the
6:50sin, the experience of trying to cover
6:53up his sins, the experience of being
6:56confronted and convicted by God, and the
7:00experience of confessing and being
7:02forgiven by God, David lays these out
7:06for us in Psalm 32. Because not only
7:10does maskil mean to reflect on the on
7:13the experience, it means to instruct
7:16others
7:16>> [snorts]
7:17>> by the experience. So, David intends for
7:20Psalm 32 to teach transgressors God's
7:24ways. God's ways of confronting sins,
7:27God's ways of convicting the sinner,
7:29God's ways of forgiving the penitent and
7:32restoring them to fellowship with him.
7:35He lays these out for us that you and I
7:39may learn you can't cover your sins from
7:42God.
7:43But if you will repent, God is willing
7:47and able to forgive you and to cleanse
7:50you and to make you as if you had never
7:53sinned.
7:55He starts by talking about in verses 1
7:58to 7 the experience of grace. The
8:01experience of grace. In verses 1 to 7,
8:04he lays out for us the experience that
8:07he had with the grace of God. The law
8:11demanded his death, but when he cried
8:14out to God, he experienced restorative
8:18grace in the presence of God. And I want
8:21everybody in this house to know that no
8:23matter how no matter how far you have
8:26drifted, how low you have sunken, if you
8:29will cry out to God, there is grace in
8:33God for all of the sins and the guilt
8:37that you can bear today.
8:41Oh, what peace we often forsake. Oh,
8:44what needless PAINS WE BEAR ALL BECAUSE
8:48WE refuse to carry everything
8:52to God in prayer. He He starts by
8:55talking about the experience of grace.
8:56He starts with the blessing of
8:58confession. Verses 1 to 2, he he deals
9:00with the blessing of confession. He
9:02Let's Let me read these verses. Blessed
9:04is the man whose transgression is
9:05forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed
9:07is the man to whom Jehovah does not
9:10charge iniquity and in whose spirit
9:13there is no God. Th- This word blessed
9:16This word blessed is the second psalm to
9:18start with the word blessed in addition
9:20to Psalm 1. Psalm 1 says to us that
9:23blessed is the person who does not go
9:26astray in the path of the ungodly, who
9:28whose delight is in the law of God. But
9:32Psalm 32 presents to us another way to
9:35be blessed. It is saying to us for all
9:37of us who have gone astray in the path
9:40of sinners, all of us who have stood in
9:42the way of sinners, who have who have
9:45walked in the counsel of the ungodly and
9:47have not obeyed the word of the Lord.
9:49He's saying to us that that does not
9:52mean you can never ever be blessed
9:55again. He is saying that if you will
9:57just repent and allow GOD TO FORGIVE
10:00YOU, you can still be blessed. Am I
10:02talking to anybody in this house?
10:05You can still be blessed. Blessed
10:07Blessed is the man whose sin is
10:10forgiven. And to help us to understand
10:13the the the great exceeding joy and
10:17happiness and blessings that comes with
10:20being forgiven, David in these two
10:22verses uses four terms to describe the
10:27depth of his sins. Because you see,
10:29brothers and sisters, you and I might
10:31not be able to appreciate
10:34the blessing, the great joy of being
10:37forgiven by God until we come to grips
10:40with how dastardly and deep our sins
10:43are.
10:44He uses four terms for sin. He calls it
10:46transgression. He said, "God, this was
10:48not just a mistake." I like David
10:50because, you know, a lot of us when we
10:52go to God, we say, "You know, I made a
10:54mistake."
10:56You know, God, I I erred. But, you know,
10:58God, everybody is doing it. I I didn't
11:00do anything that anybody didn't do. No.
11:02No, David went to God AND HE SAID, "GOD,
11:04FORGIVE MY TRANSGRESSION, MY
11:07TRANSGRESSION, my rebellion. Forgive my
11:10sin. Forgive me because I missed your
11:13holy mark. You put me in I should know
11:16better because I know your law. But, by
11:18my actions of sleeping with Bathsheba
11:21and ordering Uriah to be killed, I
11:23missed the mark." And then he goes
11:25further. He said, "Lord, but my
11:27rebellion and my missing the mark came
11:30because I've got iniquity." Now,
11:31iniquity is deep because iniquity speaks
11:35to our character. He is saying to God
11:38that my character is crooked. Iniquity
11:41means something that is bent, that is
11:43crooked. He is saying, "All of these
11:46sins that I committed, I didn't do it
11:48because somebody made me do it. I did it
11:52because I'm crooked. You called me, but
11:55I'm crooked. You anointed me, but I'm
11:57crooked. I'VE GOT SOME CROOKED ways in
12:00me. I've got some wicked." THAT IS WHY
12:03THE THE THE Solomon said, "If God said,
12:05'If my people who are called by my name
12:09shall humble themselves, pray, seek my
12:12face.' And hear this, 'AND TURN FROM
12:16THEIR
12:18NOW, NOW, LET'S GO BACK. LET'S LET'S
12:19REWIND. IF MY PEOPLE Did anybody CATCH
12:23THAT?
12:24GOD IS SAYING, "It is possible that my
12:27people, my anointed ones, still got some
12:31wicked ways in them." I I I'm not
12:33talking to any of you in here because
12:35you're all straightened out. YOU YOU
12:37HAVE NO CROOKED WAYS. BUT DAVID IS
12:39SAYING, "GOD, I'M CROOKED BEFORE YOU.
12:42YOU YOU HAVE ANOINTED ME. YOUR SPIRIT
12:44SURROUNDS ME. BUT BUT THERE IS STILL A
12:47CROOKED PART OF ME THAT WANTS MY OWN
12:49WAY."
12:51SAYING, "GOD, DEAL not only with the sin
12:53because the sin, the transgression, the
12:56the the the THE FALLING SHORT, THESE are
12:59only the symptoms, BUT THE MAIN CAUSE is
13:02that iniquity is inside of me." I wonder
13:05if there's anybody in this house who
13:07want to want to want to want to
13:08acknowledge to God, "LORD, THIS SIN IS
13:11NOT JUST a one-off. It didn't just
13:14happen. I didn't just fall into this.
13:16This happened because I GOT SOME CROOKED
13:19ways inside of ME THAT I NEED YOU TO
13:21HELP ME TO DEAL WITH."
13:26SO, what David said to God.
13:28And he The fourth term is deceit. He
13:31says there's guile in me. There was
13:33guile in me. What What are you talking
13:35about, David? He Guile in me. Yeah. This
13:37This guile means hypocrisy. Falsehood.
13:41Why are you SAYING THAT? BECAUSE DAVID
13:43IS SAYING THAT WHILE I WAS SLEEPING WITH
13:48BATHSHEBA
13:49AND WHILE I WAS HAVING URIAH KILLED AND
13:52AFTER doing it, I was still pretending
13:55as if everything was okay.
13:57I was still showing up at the festivals,
14:00still presiding over them, still singing
14:02my songs, still preaching to the people.
14:05Am I talking to anybody? I was still
14:07acting as though everything was good. I
14:10KNEW HOW TO FAKE THE FRONT. I want to
14:12say to somebody here, you can fake it
14:14for a while and get away with it, BUT AT
14:17SOME POINT GOD IS GOING TO PULL YOU UP.
14:21OH, I feel the Holy Ghost.
14:23He said to God, "I had transgression. I
14:24had sin. I had iniquity. I had deceit
14:26and guile." But But But he he is saying
14:28to God, "My sins were abundant." But, as
14:31we learn through the writing of Paul
14:33that where sin abounds, GRACE DOES MUCH
14:37MORE ABOUND. OUR SINS MAY be as high as
14:41the mountain, BUT IT IS NOT MORE THAN
14:44THE POWER OF GOD. YOU MAY HAVE
14:47TRANSGRESSION, YOU may have iniquity,
14:50you may HAVE GUILE, BUT I'M HERE TO TELL
14:52YOU TODAY, IT IS NOT GREATER THAN THE
14:55POWER THAT GOD HAS TO FORGIVE.
14:59HALLELUJAH.
15:01SO, NOT only does David show us the
15:03depth of his sin, but he showed us the
15:05strength of God's forgiveness in three
15:06words. He says, "You have forgiven my
15:08sins." The forgiven here means God took
15:11the burdens off me. God lifted it and
15:13carried away. God took the burdens from
15:16me. And where did he put it, might I
15:18ask? He put them on Christ, for he was
15:21wounded for our transgression. He was
15:24bruised for our iniquity. THE
15:26CHASTISEMENT FOR OUR PEACE was what? WAS
15:29LAID [screaming] ON HIM, AND BY HIS
15:33STRIPES we are healed. David didn't know
15:37it, but when he confessed, he was
15:39LOOKING FORWARD TO THE CRUCIFIXION of
15:41Christ. Now, when you and I confess, we
15:44are looking backward and WE ARE LAYING
15:46OUR SINS ON THE CRUCIFIED CHRIST. HE can
15:50carry it.
15:52He can carry it. He said, "Cast all your
15:54cares upon me because I care for you."
15:57He He forgives, but not only does it
15:59forgive, he covers. That That the word
16:01cover here it it it it was used It was a
16:05a scribal
16:07term. It was when there was an error in
16:09the script, and and they would put a
16:11corrective fluid over it so that that
16:14same piece of papyrus that seemed like
16:18it was now damaged and destroyed can be
16:21rewritten again. When we confess to God,
16:23that's what he does. He covers us with
16:26the blood of Jesus so that your life can
16:29be rewritten again. I mean, I know that
16:32your sins had written on you with the
16:35scarlet letter.
16:37But when God covers you with the blood
16:39of Jesus, hallelujah, he writes on you
16:42new brand SOUL. AM I TALKING TO ANYBODY
16:44HERE? HE HE WRITES A NEW THING. MERCY
16:48rewrote my life. I should have fallen.
16:51My soul CAST DOWN, BUT THANK GOD THAT
16:55HIS MERCY rewrote my Is there anybody
16:59that's glad that when you repent, GOD
17:02CAN REWRITE THE COURSE OF YOUR LIFE?
17:06HE COVERS AND THEN HE SAYS he doesn't
17:09count my sins.
17:10That means you can go deep diving if you
17:13want to, but but God has erased that sin
17:16from the ledger. Hallelujah. You know,
17:18you know, when you have when you've done
17:20certain sins here in this country and
17:23even some transgression against the law,
17:25and when they forgive you,
17:28your record can still be found.
17:31Somebody can still bring it up. But but
17:33Bill Clinton, before he left office, he
17:35decided to pardon his younger brother.
17:39And he did something, he struck his
17:42brother's crimes from the record so that
17:45if a police officer were TO PULL HIS
17:48BROTHER OVER, he men see his and say,
17:51"But but hold on. I I The news said
17:53something about you back in the 1990s."
17:55But but here's THE DEAL, THEY CAN'T FIND
17:58THE record anymore BECAUSE IT'S NO
18:00LONGER COUNTED. IS THERE ANYBODY here
18:02that's glad? Anybody? Is there anybody
18:04that's glad THAT THAT WHEN GOD FORGAVE
18:07YOU, PEOPLE CAN SEE YOU AND SAY, "BUT
18:08BUT YOU ARE THE ONE." BUT YOU CAN SAY,
18:10"MY record is CLEAR BECAUSE GOD
18:14DOES NOT CHOOSE TO COUNT THIS AGAINST
18:16ME."
18:18HALLELUJAH.
18:20It will not come up at the judgement. My
18:22God, I feel the Holy Ghost here. My
18:24record OF WHAT I DID BEFORE I REPENTED
18:28WILL NOT BE BROUGHT UP AT THE JUDGEMENT
18:30BECAUSE GOD DECIDED IT WILL NOT BE
18:33COUNTED AGAINST YOU.
18:35WILL NOT BE counted against you.
18:36Brothers and sisters, he talks about the
18:38blessing of confessing, but but he also
18:40talks about the burden
18:42of unconfessing. Here it is in verses 3
18:43and 4. When I kept silence, my bones
18:46became old through my roaring all the
18:48day long. For by day and by night your
18:51hand was heavy on me. My sap is turned
18:55into the droughts of summer. He is
18:57describing for us his mental and his
19:00emotional state when he tried to live a
19:04double life. When he tried to hide his
19:07sin from God. He's saying, "My very
19:09bones began to decay." In other words, I
19:11looked happy on the outside, but there
19:13was no joy. There was no peace because I
19:16always felt like somebody knew what I
19:19did wrong. That somebody was going to
19:21find out. Somebody was going to bring it
19:23up. DO DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH PEACE HAS
19:27ANYBODY IN HERE ever tried to sin and
19:30cover it up? Let me raise my hand first.
19:34YOU YOU YOU CAN'T GIVE ANYBODY YOUR
19:36PHONE
19:38BECAUSE YOU KNOW THEY MIGHT SEE those
19:39dirty pictures. They might see those
19:41text message you've been receiving. Am I
19:43talking to anybody here? Come on now.
19:44Don't look away. Don't look away. You
19:46You You have to build a secret social
19:50media page
19:51to go with the lie you've been telling.
19:53Am I TALKING TO ANYBODY? DAVID IS SAYING
19:55THAT WHEN WE TRY TO NOT CONFESS OUR
19:59SINS, HE SAID, "I WAS groaning like a
20:02wounded animal all night. I couldn't
20:04sleep well. I I I I mean I I I was
20:08keeping up a good show in the public,
20:10but I was living A DOUBLE LIFE and it
20:13took my peace away." He is saying that
20:16there's a burden and he's saying he says
20:18God does it.
20:20Lean in here. He says he says it wasn't
20:22Satan who did that. He says by day AND
20:24BY NIGHT GOD'S HAND was heavy on me. My
20:28God, I feel the Holy Ghost. God's hand
20:31of displeasure was leaning on David.
20:34God's conviction for sin at every turn
20:39God convicted him. Brothers and sisters,
20:40I want you to hear me now. You see it's
20:43a burden, but it's also a blessing.
20:46BECAUSE IF WE CAN BE CONVICTED FOR OUR
20:50SINS, WE WILL never repent of those
20:52sins. My God. AND IF WE NEVER REPENT OF
20:56THOSE SINS, WE'LL NEVER ENJOY THE
20:57forgiveness of God. GOD LOVES US TOO
21:01MUCH TO LET YOU BE AT PEACE WITH
21:04UNCONFESSED SINS THAT ARE DRAGGING YOU
21:06DOWN TO HELL. YOU LOOK GOOD TO
21:08EVERYBODY, BUT GOD SEES THE UGLINESS OF
21:11THE SIN IN YOUR LIFE AND GOD SAYS, "I
21:13WILL NOT LET YOU BE AT PEACE UNTIL YOU
21:16CONFESS THIS."
21:19How many want to lift your hand and
21:20thank God
21:21that he will not let us be at peace
21:23until we confess? Lord, if there is sin
21:26in my life, hallelujah, LET YOUR HAND BE
21:30HEAVY UPON ME. LET ME FEEL THE
21:33OPPRESSION AND THE DEPRESSION FROM YOUR
21:35HAND TILL I COME AND FESS UP BEFORE YOU
21:39AND GET IT RIGHT. I'D RATHER live with a
21:41burden OF CONVICTION FOR SIN THAN LIVE
21:45WITH PEACE WITH unconfessed sins.
21:49He said God's hand were so heavy on me.
21:52Selah.
21:54Now, this is beautiful here.
21:56Selah is a beautiful term.
21:58He said, "I want you to pause and think
21:59about that." IT'S A BEAUTIFUL THING
22:03THAT GOD ALLOWS US TO HAVE A CONSCIENCE.
22:07THAT GOD ALLOWS US TO FEEL THE CRUSHING
22:09WEIGHT OF GUILT so that guilt might lead
22:12us to repentance.
22:15He went on to say, my God, there's a
22:16breakthrough in confessing things, verse
22:185. I confess my sins. He said He said, I
22:21confess my sins and and my iniquity I
22:24have hidden. He said, God, when I came
22:26before you, I confess it all. I confess
22:28the sin that I did and I did not hide
22:31that I'm broken inside. Who remembers
22:33when he cried out to God? He says, I was
22:35shapen in iniquity and in a sin did my
22:39mother conceive me. Cleanse me in the
22:42INWARD PARTS. NOT NOT JUST DEAL WITH THE
22:45ACTION, but deal with me. Deal with my
22:47brokenness because God, you know me. I
22:50can DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF AND IF YOU
22:53DON'T DEAL WITH THIS BROKENNESS in me,
22:56it will not only BE BATHSHEBA AND URIAH,
22:59BUT WHO TO TELL, DOWN THE ROAD IT MIGHT
23:01BE SOMEBODY ELSE. AM I TALKING TO
23:03ANYBODY? HE SAID, I CONFESS NOT ONLY MY
23:05SINS, BUT MY VERY HEART BEFORE GOD.
23:09BROTHERS AND SISTERS, THAT'S TRUE
23:10CONFESSION. There are too many of us
23:12that are trying to predicate what we did
23:15before God as if it's not too bad and I
23:17know that this modern society is trying
23:20to tell us, don't talk about iniquity.
23:22Don't talk about sin. Don't tell us
23:24we're distorted. No, no, no. Just just
23:26just tell us that there is a good you
23:29inside there and God want to pull it
23:31out. No, that's not what the Bible said.
23:32THE BIBLE SAID, ALL HAVE SINNED AND COME
23:36SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD. I NEED THE
23:40CONVICTING POWER OF GOD TO PULL THE
23:42CONFESSION OUT OF ME.
23:45HALLELUJAH.
23:47He confessed to God. He acknowledged
23:48what God already knew because that's
23:50what confession is. It's just It's
23:51agreeing with God that your sin is not
23:53as good as you make it sound. That your
23:55sin is as bad as it really is. What?
23:58Killing somebody? That's terrible.
24:00David, how do you live WITH THAT? HE
24:02CONFESSED. HE CAME INTO agreement with
24:05God, but here's the deal, not only do
24:07you come into agreement with God when
24:08you confess about the ugliness of your
24:10sin, but the beautifulness of his
24:12forgiveness. For I hear God saying that
24:14if you will confess, I will forgive. Am
24:17I talking to anybody? If you just lay it
24:20out, I'M JUST WAIT I ALREADY KNOW, BUT
24:22IF YOU WILL CONFESS, I'M READY TO WASH
24:25YOU. I'M READY TO CLEAN YOU. I GOT ALL
24:27THE AGENTS HERE READY TO CLEAN YOU UP.
24:29IF YOU WILL JUST CONFESS, PEACE CAN BE
24:32YOURS AGAIN. JOY CAN be yours again.
24:34Sela.
24:36Pause.
24:38Think about that. Then he goes on in
24:39verse 6 and 7 to talk about the benefits
24:41of confessing sins. He says, "Let every
24:44godly person pray to you in a time when
24:47you may be found. Surely in the floods
24:49of great waters they shall not come near
24:51him. You are my hiding place. You
24:54preserve me from trouble. You circle me
24:56with songs of deliverance." This is a
24:58lot to get in here, but but the short of
25:00it is this, that David now now sees the
25:04benefits of confessing his sins to God.
25:08Previously, he was hiding from God. Now
25:10he's saying to God, "You are my hiding
25:13place. You are my refuge." My God, he's
25:16talking about the restoration of
25:19relationship with him and God. Does
25:22anybody remember how it felt, how the
25:25joy you felt, the refreshing you felt
25:28when you confess and you knew that God
25:30restored you? Is there anybody who knew
25:32that joy? He said, "Not only did you
25:34protect me from within your presence,
25:37but but you protect me from accusation.
25:39The floods of great waters, the
25:41accusations that they can now bring
25:43against me, none of them can come NIGH
25:46TO ME BECAUSE WHEN GOD FORGIVES, HE
25:48HIDES US." AM I TALKING TO ANYBODY? "You
25:50can dig my sins UP IF YOU WANT TO," SAYS
25:52DAVID, "BUT I'M COVERED IN THE VERY
25:55PRESENCE OF GOD WHO FORGIVES AND
25:58RESTORES. AND NOT ONLY THAT, HE
26:00surrounds me with songs of deliverance.
26:02I feel the Holy Ghost IN HERE. MY GUILT
26:05is gone, BUT INSTEAD, I NOW HAVE A SONG.
26:08Blessed assurance, JESUS IS MINE. OH,
26:13WHAT A FORETASTE OF GLORY DIVINE,
26:16BECAUSE MY SINS ARE FORGIVEN. HE GIVES
26:19ME A NEW SONG IN MY HEART. I AM
26:22REDEEMED, MY GOD, BOUGHT WITH A PRICE,
26:26BECAUSE JESUS HAS changed my whole life.
26:29Is there anybody who has a song in your
26:31heart, a song OF FORGIVENESS, A SONG OF
26:34REDEMPTION THAT IS BUBBLING IN YOUR
26:37HEART RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE YOU KNOW YOU
26:39HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN BY THE LORD?
26:43And if you still have guilt, run to the
26:45cross. Hallelujah. Look to the BLEEDING
26:48LAMB OF GOD. MY GOD, CUZ HE WANTS TO
26:50FORGIVE YOU AND GIVE YOU A SONG IN YOUR
26:53HEART.
26:57SO, he talked about the experience of
26:59grace. Number two, he talked in verses 8
27:01to 9 about the expectation of growth.
27:05The expectation of growth. Brothers and
27:06sisters, he says God said to him, this
27:08is now God speaking to David in verses 8
27:11to 9. God turned around and says to
27:13David, "I WILL INSTRUCT YOU
27:16and teach you in the way which you
27:17should go. I will counsel you. My eyes
27:20shall be on you. Be not like the horse
27:23or the mule who have no understanding,
27:25whose mouth must be held in with bit and
27:27bridle so that they do not come near to
27:29you." David is saying here in these
27:31verses that not only does God want to
27:34forgive sin, but God want to address how
27:37we live after he has forgiven the sin.
27:41Got to hear me now. I know there's a lot
27:43of people in the church who give David a
27:45bad rap.
27:49All right.
27:51I knew there'd be a pet pregnant pause
27:53right there.
27:54We give David a bad rap. How so?
27:57EVERY TIME WE WANT TO EXCUSE OUR SINS.
28:01IF I TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES I HEAR
28:02BRIAN Carn talk comparing himself to
28:04David, no, you are NOT DAVID.
28:06DAVID ONLY DID IT ONE TIME.
28:09YES, I'M NOT AFRAID TO CALL NAMES.
28:11They're public figures. All that they do
28:13is out there and a lot of you following
28:15them.
28:19HE DID NOT
28:22DAVID WAS NOT A MULTIPLIED
28:25ADULTERER.
28:26AM I TALKING to anybody here?
28:28HE DID IT ONE TIME.
28:31AND WHEN GOD FORGAVE HIM OF THE ADULTERY
28:36WITH BATHSHEBA AND THE MURDER OF URIAH,
28:38DAVID SINNED IN OTHER WAYS, BUT HE DID
28:40NOT GO BACK TO DO THE SAME THING OVER
28:43AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. YOU'RE
28:46NOT LIKE DAVID IF YOU KEEP DOING THE
28:48SAME THING. DAVID SAID GOD WARNED HIM.
28:50GOD SAID TO HIM, "COME HERE, DAVID.
28:52You've been trying to do this your own
28:54way, but now THAT I HAVE FORGIVEN YOU, I
28:56don't intend to keep on forgiving you
28:58over and over. Brothers and sisters,
29:00what's at stake here? What's at stake is
29:02this, it is not that God will not
29:04forgive us. It is what the it's the
29:06effect that repeated sins have on us.
29:11For one, every time you do the same sin,
29:14it dulls your conscience. Am I talking
29:17to anybody here? AND BEFORE WE KNOW IT,
29:20WE BECOME SO CALLOUS THAT WE DO NOT KNOW
29:23HOW TO REPENT.
29:27AH, SHAT OSAYA.
29:29HALLELUJAH.
29:30God said to David, "I don't want you to
29:32get into the cycle." I There's a poem I
29:34came across by Portia Nelson,
29:36a poem of five scenes and in this she
29:39calls it "There's a hole in my
29:40sidewalk."
29:42Let me read the poem for you because it
29:44it it it aligns with what David is
29:46trying to convey to us. She said,
29:48"Uh scene one, I walk down the street.
29:51There's a deep hole in the sidewalk. I
29:54fall in.
29:56I am lost. I am helpless.
29:59It isn't my fault.
30:01It takes forever to find a way out.
30:04Scene two,
30:05I WALK DOWN THE SAME STREET.
30:08DO YOU SEE THE PROBLEM?
30:09THERE'S A deep hole in the sidewalk.
30:12I pretend I do not see it.
30:14I fall in again.
30:16I can't believe I'm in the same place.
30:19But, it isn't my fault.
30:20It still takes me a long time to get out
30:22of it. Scene three,
30:24I WALK DOWN THE SAME STREET.
30:29THERE'S A DEEP HOLE IN THE SIDEWALK. I
30:32see it's there, BUT I STILL FALL IN
30:34ANYWAY. By now, it's a habit. My eyes
30:37are open. I know where I am. It's my
30:39fault. So, I get out immediately.
30:42Scene four,
30:44I WALK DOWN THE SAME STREET. WHAT IN THE
30:46WORLD?
30:50THERE'S A DEEP HOLE IN THE SIDEWALK.
30:53BUT, THIS TIME I WALK around it.
30:55>> [laughter]
30:56>> But, can I go on to scene five, my
30:57favorite one?
30:59I walk down another street. Lean in
31:01here. WHAT GOD WANTS FROM US IS THAT
31:05AFTER HE HAS FORGIVEN US, WE DON'T
31:07STRIVE TO FLIRT WITH THE SAME SIN. TURN
31:10AROUND. MY GOD, I FEEL THE HOLY GHOST.
31:13AND LEARN HOW
31:14[clears throat and screaming] TO WALK
31:14DOWN ANOTHER STREET.
31:18HALLELUJAH.
31:19HALLELUJAH.
31:21If that phone call is going to mess you
31:23up, why keep on taking it?
31:25And he keeps on calling you AT 11:00 OR
31:2812:00 WHEN YOU'RE GOING to bed.
31:31You know what it's going to do to you.
31:33Why do you keep taking it?
31:36AM I TALKING TO ANYBODY HERE?
31:39YOU'RE PRAYING AND YOU'RE binding up
31:41this and you're binding up that, BUT
31:43YOU'RE GOING ON A DATE WITH THE SAME
31:45PERSON AND YOU KNOW YOU ALREADY CROSSED
31:47THE LINES. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS GOING TO
31:48HAPPEN?
31:51WALK DOWN ANOTHER STREET.
32:02IT IS GOD'S intention firstly to mature
32:05us through tender guidance. Verse 8. In
32:07verse 8 God says, "I want to I want to
32:10guide you with my eye." I can't unpack
32:13all of this but but but it's this is
32:15talking about intimacy with God. You
32:16know, you you know,
32:18anybody your your parent had that look?
32:21Anybody?
32:23There is a bond you have with your
32:24parent that you're acting up, you're
32:26cutting up Lady Grace, and mommy just
32:28turn around and just give you that look.
32:30She doesn't even move her hand, she just
32:32move her head.
32:34You know what that means? You need to
32:35leave there and go sit down over there.
32:38That that's what GOD IS SAYING. I WANT
32:40SUCH AN INTIMACY WITH YOU that I can
32:43guide you with my eye. I feel the Holy
32:45Ghost in here.
32:47I CAN JUST USE MY EYE, MY WORD, MY HOLY
32:50GHOST AND I CAN I CAN JUST POINT YOU.
32:52YOU ARE SO SENSITIVE, YOU ARE SO ATTUNED
32:54THAT I CAN JUST GUIDE YOU WITH MY EYE IN
32:57THE RIGHT PATH. But he is saying that if
33:00you will not take the tender guidance, I
33:02love you so much that if I can't mature
33:05you through tender guidance, I'll mature
33:08you through tough grace.
33:10A lot of us think that grace is only
33:11soft, but but there's a tough there's a
33:14rough side of grace. He said, "IF YOU
33:17WILL BE LIKE THE HORSE AND THE MULE,
33:20WELL, I'M GOING TO PUT THE grace of a
33:21bridle on you." Am I talking to anybody?
33:24I'm going to put the bit in your MOUTH
33:26AND A BRIDLE SO THAT YOUR EYES I I I
33:28WILL USE CIRCUMSTANCES TO KEEP you in
33:32the way you are to go. Sometimes God
33:35will let some of our dirty secrets come
33:37out.
33:38So
33:38>> that greater scrutiny come on us, SO
33:40THAT NOW PEOPLE BEGIN TO HOLD YOU
33:43ACCOUNTABLE. AM I TALKING TO ANYBODY? HE
33:45WILL USE SOME ROUGH CIRCUMSTANCES. HE'LL
33:48BREAK SOME RELATIONSHIPS. There was one
33:50blind man, I'll share the story real
33:52quickly, I met in 2018 while preaching
33:54in Jamaica.
33:55And he talked about his experience of
33:57being at a church and there was a
33:59so-called prophet that was trying to
34:01open his eyes.
34:03And the man was
34:05binding blindness and decreeing and
34:07declaring that his eyes should be open.
34:10We We happen to be staying at the same
34:12Airbnb area.
34:14And And he He He said to me at breakfast
34:16that morning, he said to me, "Pastor, at
34:19no point" I wasn't a pastor then, by the
34:21way. He said to me, "Well, you know,
34:23once you're a preacher, everybody call
34:24you pastor."
34:25He said to me at the time,
34:27"There is no point in which that brother
34:31asked me if I wanted back my sight."
34:36Oh GOD.
34:38HE SAID, "GOD HAD TO TAKE MY SIGHT TO
34:41DELIVER ME FROM THE SIN that consumed my
34:44life." He said, "As long as I had my
34:46sight, I would keep on cheating on my
34:48wife. As long as I HAD MY SIGHT, I WAS
34:51AT EVERY GAMBLING DEN AND GAMBLING
34:54HOUSE. BUT NOW THAT I DON'T HAVE MY
34:56SIGHT, I HAVE TO RELY ON MY WIFE." AM I
34:59TALKING TO ANYBODY IN THIS HOUSE? I FEEL
35:02LIKE PREACHING HERE. SOMETIMES, THE
35:04GRACE OF GOD IS TOUGH GRACE.
35:08HE SAID, "GOD TOOK MY SIGHT TO SAVE MY
35:11SOUL." I WONDER WHAT GOD WILL HAVE TO DO
35:14TO SOME OF us to save our souls. BUT
35:16HE'S SAYING TO US, "YOU DON'T HAVE TO
35:19GET THERE IF YOU LET HIM GUIDE YOU WITH
35:21HIS EYE." AH, SHAMMAH. HEY, GOD, thank
35:25you. Hiya, shammah. HEY. IS THERE
35:28ANYBODY ELSE IN HERE? I'D RATHER HIM
35:31GUIDE ME WITH HIS EYE. I'D RATHER BE BE
35:33SENSITIVE TO THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD. I'D
35:35RATHER ATTUNE MY HEART TO THE WORD SO
35:38THAT GOD DOESN'T HAVE TO PUT A BIT OR
35:40BRIDLE ON ME TO DRAW ME CLOSE TO HIM.
35:45HALLELUJAH.
35:46Number three, let me close this sermon
35:48here. Number three,
35:49he talked about the experience of grace.
35:51He talked about the expectation of
35:53growth. God expects us to grow
35:56after we have been forgiven.
35:58Lastly, he talked about the expression
36:01of gratitude. Verses 10 to 11. He said,
36:03"The wicked has many sorrows, but mercy,
36:05hallelujah, embraces him who trusts IN
36:08JEHOVAH.
36:09BE GLAD IN JEHOVAH,
36:12and rejoice, you righteous, and shout
36:14for joy, all you upright in heart." He
36:18He He ends the psalm with the glaring
36:22contrast between the impenitent and the
36:25penitent in verse 10. He says that
36:29TO DECIDE TO COVER your sins and not
36:32repent, not only does it have a
36:34psychological, spiritual, and emotional
36:37impact WHILE YOU ARE ALIVE, BUT HE'S
36:40SAYING that beyond this life, there are
36:43many sorrows that will grip hold on your
36:47life. Am I talking TO ANYBODY HERE? I I
36:49I DON'T WANT TO LIVE MY LIFE in sorrows.
36:52I don't want to live my life in sorrows.
36:54I don't want to I don't want to come to
36:56church every day living a double life
36:59and
37:00>> [clears throat]
37:01>> still acting like I'm happy and I got it
37:03together, but in the depth of my soul,
37:06there is a deep sorrow for sins that
37:08have not been confessed. And here's the
37:10deal, the risk is this, THAT IF I KEEP
37:13ON sinning and I KEEP ON HIDING AND I
37:16KEEP ON TRYING TO DECEIVE OTHERS, THERE
37:19IS THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE LORD MAY
37:21COME OR I MAY DIE IN SIN AND FIND MY WAY
37:26IN ETERNAL SORROW. Am I talking TO
37:29ANYBODY HERE? MANY SORROWS ARE THERE FOR
37:31THE WICKED.
37:33Here is
37:34what Matthew said he will say to those
37:36on the left, "Depart from me, you
37:37cursed, into eternal fire prepared for
37:40the devil and his angels." Revelation
37:4220:15, "And if anyone was not found
37:45written in the book of life, they were
37:47thrown in the lake of fire." I'm telling
37:50you, there shall be weeping and wailing
37:53and gnashing of teeth. I'd rather weep
37:55now AT THE ALTAR. I'D RATHER BE BROKEN
37:58NOW AT THE ALTAR. I'D RATHER CRY OUT NOW
38:01AT THE ALTAR AND HAVE MY SINS FORGIVEN
38:04IN THE BLOOD OF JESUS THAN TO WEEP
38:06FOREVER IN THE PIT OF HELL THAT I CAN'T
38:09GET OUT OF IT. AM I TALKING TO ANYBODY?
38:11MY CONSCIENCE WILL BE ALIVE IN HELL.
38:13PEOPLE'S CONSCIENCES WILL BE ALIVE in
38:15hell, but they just will not be able to
38:17repent of their sins BECAUSE THE DOOR OF
38:20MERCY WILL BE CLOSED. I'M SAYING TO
38:22SOMEBODY IN THIS HOUSE RIGHT NOW, IF YOU
38:25ARE STILL IN UNCONFESSED SINS, TODAY IS
38:28YOUR DAY TO GET IT RIGHT WITH GOD.
38:32HALLELUJAH. Many sorrows are there for
38:34the ungodly, but look at the other side.
38:36Hallelujah. There are blessings. Oh God.
38:39He says the blessing, the steadfast love
38:41of God has wrapped itself around the one
38:46who will forgive, who will repent of
38:48their sins. When you repent of your sin,
38:50God wraps his arms of love around you.
38:53I'd rather be wrapped in this gentle
38:56embrace OF MY SAVIOR'S LOVE THAN to live
38:59in sin and not be at peace with myself.
39:02Am I talking to anybody in this place?
39:05But then he closes here with the command
39:07to the forgiven to give God praise.
39:09Verse 11, he says, "When God forgives,
39:12when God declares you righteous and
39:15upright,
39:16look at this. Look at these two words.
39:17Righteous means God has taken you out of
39:21a position where you were guilty of
39:23transgression, and God has made you
39:27righteous, but not only that, he says
39:29God makes you upright. That is to say
39:31that not only [clears throat] does God
39:32forgive you, but God says, "I want to
39:34keep on working on you. I want to make
39:37you upright. I WANT TO SANCTIFY YOU. I
39:40want to purge you. I want to make you
39:42strong. So, when the tempter comes
39:44around the next time, you can stand up
39:47right." Am I talking to anybody here? I
39:48I I WANT TO RENEW YOU SO MUCH THAT WHEN
39:51THAT joker comes around the next time,
39:54you can say to him, "I'd rather have
39:55Jesus."
39:58Oh, God. Come on, let's close here. I'd
40:00rather have Jesus than silver or gold.
40:04I'd rather have Jesus than than just one
40:07night of pleasure. I'D RATHER HAVE
40:10JESUS. I'd rather be at peace with God
40:14than to be at peace with you. AM I
40:15TALKING TO ANYBODY HERE? IS THERE
40:17ANYBODY in the house that has gladness
40:19in your heart? Do I have anybody here?
40:21You say that when God forgives you that
40:23that there is a gladness in your heart.
40:26That there IS A JOY THAT overwhelms your
40:29soul. Is there anybody in the house THAT
40:32IS SO GLAD THAT HE HAS TURNED YOUR
40:35MOURNING INTO DANCING? IS THERE ANYBODY
40:38THAT'S GLAD THAT GOD FORGAVE YOUR SINS?
40:40ANYBODY THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE FALLEN AND
40:44YOUR SOUL CAST DOWN, BUT MERCY
40:48GAVE YOU another chance. Lift your hand
40:51IN THE SANCTUARY AND BLESS THE NAME OF
40:54GOD. HE SAYS, "BE GLAD ABOUT IT. REJOICE
