Summary

Assoc. Pastor Chris Wilson examines the life of Job to show that God is sovereign over all trials and that believers must maintain their integrity and determination to 'hold out' even when they do not understand the 'why' behind their suffering.

Key points
  • God is completely sovereign and does not owe us an explanation for our trials; Job never knew about God's conversation with Satan.
  • Integrity means holding fast to God even when your world collapses, your friends misunderstand you, and your family is hurting.
  • We must be careful not to justify ourselves before God based on our works or religious status (tithing, serving, etc.), as our own right hands cannot save us.
  • Acknowledge that God is the Creator of all things and His wisdom is too high for us to fully grasp, especially in the midst of the 'whirlwind.'

Life application

When facing a 'one-day' tragedy or a season of loss, resist the urge to list your good deeds to God; instead, surrender to His sovereignty and continue to 'hold out' in faith despite not knowing the plan.

Reflection questions
  1. When you go through trials, do you tend to feel like God 'owes' you an explanation because of your service to Him?
  2. How can we offer better comfort to friends in pain than Job's three friends did?
  3. Job's wife was grieving her own massive losses; how does that change your perspective on her 'curse God and die' comment?
  4. What recent 'whirlwinds' in your life or community (like loss or displacement) require you to trust God's character rather than His visible plan?

7:29this morning.
7:31>> Oh, Jesus.
7:34But I believe the Lord has something to
7:35be said to be said in the house of the
7:37Lord this morning.
7:39We we we just have to do what we got to
7:41do and let the Lord have his way. He is
7:45in control. We are not.
7:48>> Amen.
7:50>> Amen.
7:51>> Amen. So, if you have your Bibles,
7:56go with me to the book of Job.
8:00Go with me to the book of Job. And we're
8:01going to be doing some reading this
8:02morning. Is that all right?
8:05>> We're going to be reading the word of
8:06God this morning.
8:09We don't want any confusion. It's not
8:11about philosophies and what you think
8:13and what I think.
8:15We're going to go to the documented word
8:16of God. So Job chapter 1. Job chapter 1.
8:19There was a man in the land of whose
8:22name was Job.
8:24And that was man was perfect and upright
8:26and one that feared God and assued evil.
8:29And there was there were born unto him
8:33seven sons and three daughters.
8:36His substance also was 7,000 sheep
8:41and 3,000 camel and 500 yolk of oxen and
8:46500 sea asses or donkeys.
8:50And we were we and a very great
8:52household.
8:54So that the man was the greatest of all
8:58men of the east.
9:00And his sons went and feasted in their
9:03houses everyone his day.
9:07And he sent and called for their sisters
9:10to eat and drink with them. And it was
9:13so.
9:15When the days of the fasting or the
9:17feastings were gone about that, Job sent
9:19and sanctified them and rose up early in
9:23the morning and offered burnt offerings
9:25according to the number of all of them.
9:28For Job said, "It might be, just might
9:30be, that one of my sons have sinned and
9:34cursed God in their hearts." Thus did
9:37Joel Job continually.
9:41There was a day
9:44when the sons of God came to present
9:47themselves before the Lord,
9:50and Satan came also amongst them. And
9:54the Lord said unto Satan, "Whence comest
9:57thou?" Then Satan answered the Lord, and
10:00said, "From going to and fro in the
10:02earth, and from walking up and down in
10:05it?"
10:07And the Lord said unto Satan, "Hast thou
10:10considered my servant Job,
10:15that there is none like him in the
10:17earth, a perfect and an upright man, one
10:20that fearth God and assureth evil."
10:23Then Satan answered the Lord and said,
10:25"Dust Job fear God for not?
10:29Hast not thou made an hedge about him,
10:32and about his house, and about all that
10:35he hath on every side? Thou hast blessed
10:38his work of his hands, and his substance
10:41his increase in the land. but put forth
10:45thine hand now
10:47and touch all that he had and he will
10:51curse thee to thy face. And the Lord
10:54said unto Satan, Behold,
10:56all that he hath is in thy power. Only
11:01upon him put not forth thine hand. So
11:06Satan went forth from the presence of
11:07the Lord. Father,
11:10in the precious name of Jesus,
11:13we come to you one more time and we
11:16thank you for your presence that we feel
11:18this morning. We thank you for blessing
11:20us this morning. We thank you for the
11:22visitation that you had with us. There
11:24is no doubt, Lord God, that you're in
11:25this place. So my God, we ask Lord that
11:28you speak to us now through your holy
11:30road and we'll be careful to give you
11:33praise, glory, and honor for only you
11:36are worthy. In the name of Jesus Christ,
11:38we pray.
11:39>> [snorts]
11:40>> Amen.
11:43The Lord spoke to me a few weeks ago as
11:45I was sitting in church [snorts] next to
11:48Pastor O.
11:50And he spoke this thought into my mind
11:54that we've heard before. And the thought
11:57was the title this morning, have you
12:00considered
12:02my servant Job?
12:05Have you considered
12:08my servant Job? And I remembered years
12:10ago that I read the story of Job from
12:12from the beginning to the end.
12:15And it's important that we read the
12:17story of Job from the beginning to the
12:18end in order to understand the full
12:20context of what is going on. Because if
12:23you just take snippets of it, you can
12:26get a whole different other feel. So
12:27this morning, we're going to examine
12:29that book. Is that all right?
12:32The Bible says and in 13 and there was a
12:35day when the sons and do and his
12:37daughters were sitting and eating and
12:39drinking wine in their elders brother's
12:42house and there came a messenger unto
12:45Job and said the oxen were plowing and
12:50the asses feeding beside them and the
12:53Sebian fell upon them and took them
12:56away.
12:58They that have slain them the servants
13:00with the edge of the sword and only I
13:04Jesus only I am escaped alone
13:09to tell thee.
13:12The Bible says IN VERSE 16 WHILE he yet
13:16spake or while he was speaking
13:19they came also another AND SAID THE FIRE
13:21OF God is fallen from heaven and had
13:25birthed up the sheep. Now remember the
13:27number now there are those numbers. And
13:29the servants and consumed THEM AND ONLY
13:32I
13:34escaped alone to tell thee.
13:3717 WHILE HE was speaking,
13:42there came another and said, "Thy sons
13:45and thy daughters
13:49were eating and drinking wine in their
13:51elders brother's house. And behold,
13:54there came a great wind from the
13:56wilderness, and smoke the four corners
13:59of the house, and it fell upon the young
14:02men, and they are dead,
14:06and only I
14:10escaped alone to tell thee. Then Job
14:13arose and rent his mantle, shaved his
14:15head, and fell down upon the ground, and
14:17worshiped,
14:20and said, "Naked came I out of my
14:23mother's womb, and naked shall I return
14:27thither. The Lord gave, and the Lord
14:30taketh away. Blessed be the name of the
14:33Lord." In 22 it says, "And in all this,
14:35Job sin not nor charged God foolishly."
14:40That was Job chapter one. Everybody say
14:44chapter one.
14:44>> Chapter one.
14:46>> And just to make a synopsis of chapter
14:49one, basically Satan showed up
14:54in the midst of the sons of God to
14:57[snorts] report to God.
15:00To make sure you understand, everybody
15:02reports to God.
15:07And so GOD QUERIED HIM AS TO WHAT HE WAS
15:10DOING. Now God knows every time God asks
15:13you a question, they already knows the
15:14answer.
15:19He's setting him up. SO HE'S GOING TO
15:22AND FRO AS you know. He goes forth as a
15:24roaring lion seeking whom he may
15:29>> only who he may devour. [snorts] SO THE
15:32BIBLE SAYS HE ASKED Satan a question.
15:35Have you considered
15:38my servant Job?
15:41Now the enemy knew
15:44that Job had protection around him
15:48and knew that HE COULD NOT TOUCH JOB or
15:51his things.
15:53And if YOU'RE IN THE WILL OF GOD, IF
15:56YOU'RE SANCTIFIED AND SAVED, FILLED WITH
15:58THE HOLY GHOST, BAPTIZED IN JESUS NAME,
16:02THE ENEMY CANNOT COME TO you without
16:04going through God first.
16:07>> Hallelujah.
16:12>> He can't even touch your stuff
16:17>> without going through God first.
16:20SO THE BIBLE SAYS IN VERSE IN VERSE in
16:23chapter 1 verses 1- 12 [snorts]
16:29THAT AS SATAN WENT FIRST fourth in 13 he
16:33decided to start his entourage his
16:36barrage of issues
16:40JOB'S FIRST TRIAL began
16:44and as you read with me you saw that IT
16:48WAS JUST ONE day everybody Say one day.
16:56>> So when you think you've been through
16:57something,
17:02go through and read the book of Job.
17:06>> One day,
17:08one day. [snorts]
17:10AND IN ALL OF THIS, THE BIBLE says
17:13he sin not our charge God foolishness.
17:16That's only the first part of the story.
17:21The Bible says in Job chapter 2 again
17:26there was a day when the sons of man c
17:28came to God and presented themselves and
17:30before the Lord and the Satan came one
17:33more time
17:36AND THE LORD SAID TO Satan
17:40from whence cometh the Lord and said you
17:42know man I'm just paraphrasing I'm going
17:45to and fro in the earth walking up and
17:47down it and the Lord said,
17:51"Are you with me in the book?" AND THE
17:54LORD SAID UNTO SATAN, "HAST thou
17:59considered my servant Job, that there is
18:02none like him in the earth, a perfect
18:04and an upright man, one that fearth God
18:06and assued evil,
18:08and still he holdest fast his
18:11integrity." Everybody say integrity.
18:13>> Integrity.
18:15ALTHOUGH THOU MOVEST ME AGAINST him to
18:19destroy him without cause.
18:24Satan answered the Lord and said, "Skin
18:26for skin. Yeah, all that a man hath will
18:31he give his life, but put forth thine
18:35hand now and touch his bones and flesh,
18:39and he will curse you to your face." And
18:42the Lord said unto Satan, "Behold, he is
18:45in thy hand,
18:47but save his life."
18:54So Satan went forth from the presence of
18:56the Lord and smoked Job with sore boils
19:01from his foot to the crown of his head.
19:05And he took him a pot seared
19:08to scrape himself with all. and he sat
19:11down among the ashes.
19:16THEN HIS WIFE SAID UNTO HIM, "Dust thou
19:20still rem retain thy integrity?
19:26Curse God
19:29and die." But he said unto her, "Thou
19:31speakest as one of a foolish woman. What
19:34shall we give good? receive good at the
19:38hand of God, and shall we not receive
19:40evil? In all this, Job sinned not with
19:45his lips. Wow.
19:48Before you get all spiritual and heighty
19:51mighty heighty tighty about Job's wife,
19:56understand that she lost her children.
20:02>> THE HOUSE GONE, [screaming]
20:04>> THE FOOD GONE.
20:10EVERYTHING IS WIPED OUT.
20:14>> AND NOW [screaming]
20:15THE ONLY THING SHE HAS LEFT IS HER
20:17HUSBAND.
20:21>> I want to take you into the story this
20:22morning cuz sometimes you just read it.
20:27>> AND NOW HER HUSBAND takes sick
20:35You understand why she's saying what
20:37she's saying now?
20:41>> Enough [screaming] is enough.
20:45>> So he started to have problems with his
20:48wife.
20:50[snorts]
20:51NOW JOB HAD THREE FRIENDS. EVERYBODY SAY
20:53FRIENDS.
20:56AND THEY MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO COME SEE
20:58Job
21:02>> cuz they wanted to comfort him.
21:07Elias the Timite, Build the Shimite, and
21:10Zafur the Namite.
21:13[snorts]
21:16And when they came,
21:18they said, "Man, you must have really
21:20messed up for God to treat you this way.
21:26You need to watch your friends.
21:31You need to BE CAUTIOUS ABOUT YOUR
21:33FRIENDS BECAUSE THEY COULD BE YOUR worst
21:35enemies."
21:40[snorts]
21:42>> SEE, PAUL HAD A FRIEND. His name was
21:45Deeus.
21:51I'M NOT A friend
21:54who led him into incest.
21:57[snorts] AND JESUS HAD A friend
22:02whose name was Judas.
22:06WATCH YOUR FRIENDS.
22:08Be careful about who you call friends
22:12because sometimes they don't have your
22:14best in mind.
22:18>> Be careful about who you call your
22:20friends. [snorts] AS WE GO THROUGH THE
22:22STORY OF JOB,
22:24we get down to the situation now because
22:27we like to say, "Though he slay me, yet
22:30will I trust him." But you have to start
22:33from verse one all the way to the end of
22:35the book
22:36>> to get the full story because at some
22:39point Job had enough.
22:44>> AND HE GOT TO THE POINT WHERE HE STARTED
22:47TO TELL GOD. EVERYBODY say tell God
22:50>> who he was.
22:55>> And I'm going to paraphrase because it's
22:57too much for me to read to you. We'll be
22:59here all morning. was from 31 through
23:0238. He begins to tell God who he was.
23:05And I'm going paraphrase for you to
23:06bring it out to today. ALL RIGHT. HE
23:09TOLD GOD, "DON'T YOU KNOW I TITHE?
23:16I COME TO BIBLE STUDY.
23:20I'M ON THE USHER BOARD.
23:23I'M ON THE ORGAN.
23:25I SING IN THE CHOIR. I GIVE ALL MY ARMS
23:31I'M A THIRD GENERATION PENTECOSTAL.
23:37>> LET ME TELL YOU WHO I AM. [snorts]
23:41>> And he went on for a while doing this.
23:46And he went on for a while doing this.
23:49[snorts] And he went on for a while
23:51doing this. And then there WAS A MAN, A
23:55young man,
23:57a prophet
24:00that came on the scene and being
24:03respectful,
24:05he listened to what his friends had to
24:07say. Job's friends, Job's friends,
24:10because they were the senior of him. And
24:13he just sat by and listened to what they
24:15had to say.
24:19This prophet's name was Elleoo.
24:21Everybody say
24:23>> I need you to remember that name because
24:24it's a key character in this story that
24:26we don't talk about.
24:28So Elleoo
24:30in verse 32 verse chapter 32:1 says, "So
24:35these three men ceased to answer Job
24:37because he was righteous." Everybody say
24:39righteous.
24:41>> In his own eyes.
24:46Then was kindled the wrath of Elleu the
24:48son of Bel the buzzite of the kindred of
24:52Ram against Job was his wrath kindled
24:55because he justified himself
24:58rather than God. Also against his three
25:01friends was his wrath kindled because
25:03they had found no answer and yet
25:06condemned Job.
25:0936 Elio Elu also proceeded and said,
25:13"Suffer me a little while, and I will
25:16show thee that I have yet spake on God's
25:19behalf. I will fetch my knowledge from
25:22afar,
25:24>> and will ascribe righteousness to my
25:26maker.
25:28>> For truly my word shall not be false. He
25:32hath he that is perfect in knowledge is
25:35with thee. [snorts]
25:37OFTEN
25:39times
25:41God will send a prophet
25:44before your trials come.
25:48God will send a prophet to warn before
25:51judgment.
25:53It is IMPORTANT THAT WE PLUG OURSELVES
25:56INTO the word of God.
25:58IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU GO to Bible study.
26:02Is important that you go to church. is
26:05important because God will use his
26:09servants
26:11to minister to you to prepare you for
26:14what's coming next.
26:17SO ELLEU
26:19AFTER HE SPOKE TO JOB,
26:22I'M ASSUMING THAT JOB PONDERED A WHILE
26:25in his situation,
26:28NOT UNDERSTANDING WHAT ELLEOO was
26:30preaching to him. BUT THEN THE BIBLE
26:33SAYS IN JOB CHAPTER 38, THE LORD,
26:37everybody say the Lord.
26:38>> THE LORD.
26:39>> THE LORD [screaming] ANSWERED JOB, WHERE
26:42OUT OF THE WHIRLWIND,
26:46>> OUT OF THE TURMOIL,
26:49OUT OF THE TROUBLE,
26:51>> OUT OF THE TRIALS, [screaming]
26:52GOD STEPPED OUT OF IT.
27:01Sometimes
27:03we need to watch what God is doing and
27:06analyze what God is doing.
27:09And he said, "Who is this that dkestth
27:13counsel by WORDS WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE?
27:16GUARD UP THYSELF LIKE A MAN? For I will
27:20demand of thee, AND ANSWER THOU ME,
27:22WHERE WAS THOU WHEN I laid the
27:25foundations OF THE EARTH? DECLARE IF
27:27THOU HATH UNDERSTANDING.
27:29WHO HATH LAID THE MEASURES THEREOF, if
27:32thou knowest, or who stretcheth for the
27:34LINE UPON IT? WHEREUPON THE FOUNDATIONS
27:37THEREOF FASTENED? Or who laid THE
27:39CORNERSTONE THEREOF? WHEN THE MORNING
27:42STARS sang together, and all the sons of
27:45God shouted FOR JOY, WHO WHO SHUT UP THE
27:47sea with the doors, when it break forth
27:51as if it had issues out of the out of
27:53the womb, when I made the cloud of
27:55garment, therefore, the thick darkness
27:56and the swallowing board for it, and
27:58break it up for it, a decree, and placed
28:01the bars and doors, and said, Hereto
28:04shalt thou come, but no further. And
28:07here shall our proud waves be stayed.
28:14GOD WENT ON [screaming] FOR A WHILE
28:16DECLARING WHO HE WAS.
28:21God is sovereign. [snorts]
28:24In verse 40, moreover, Job answered, the
28:27Lord answered Job and said, "SHALL ONE
28:30WHO CONTENDS WITH THE ALMIGHTY correct
28:33him?
28:39HE WHO REBUKES GOD,
28:41LET HIM ANSWER.
28:44Job's response.
28:47Then Job answered the Lord and said,
28:49Behold, I am vile.
28:53What shall I answer you? I lay my hand
28:56over my mouth.
28:58Once I have spoken, but I will not
29:01answer. Yes, twice, but I will not
29:04proceed any further.
29:07Then God, he's not done with him yet.
29:10[snorts] Some people talk about they
29:11want God to speak to them. Let your
29:14pastor speak to you first.
29:20THEN THE LORD ANSWERED JOB OUT OF THE
29:21WHIRLWIND AND SAID, "PREPARE YOURSELF
29:25LIKE A MAN,
29:28and I will question you.
29:31YOU SHALL ANSWER ME,
29:35WOULD YOU indeed enull my judgment?
29:38Would you con condemn me that I MAY BE
29:42JUSTIFIED?
29:43HAVE YOU [screaming] AN ARM LIKE GOD?
29:47Or can you thunder with a voice like
29:50his? I'm in THE BOOK. THEN ADORN
29:53YOURSELF WITH MAJESTY
29:55AND SPLENDOR AND ARRAY YOURSELF WITH THE
29:58GLORY AND BEAUTY.
30:01Disperse the rage of the of your wrath.
30:04Look on everyone who is proud and
30:06humble. Look on everyone who is proud
30:09and bring him low. TEAR TREAD DOWN THE
30:13WICKED IN THEIR PLACE. Hide them in the
30:15dust together. Bind their faces in a
30:18hidden darkness. Then I will also
30:21confess to you
30:25that your own right hand can save you.
30:34>> Job in 42
30:36says this, I know that you can do
30:40everything
30:42>> and I know that no purpose of yours can
30:45be withheld
30:47from you. You ask, "Who is this who
30:51hides counsel without knowledge?
30:55Therefore, I've uttered what I did not
30:57understand.
31:00THINGS TOO WONDERFUL FOR me
31:03which I did not know." Listen, please,
31:07please, please, and let me speak. You
31:10said, "I will question you and you shall
31:13answer me. I have heard of you by the
31:16hearing,
31:17but now I see you.
31:22Therefore, I abhore myself.
31:26What a God.
31:29[snorts]
31:30What a God.
31:33JOB WENT THROUGH ALL THE EMOTIONS OF
31:35despair
31:37because he really had it dished out to
31:40him. And here's the thing, [snorts] God
31:43never clued him into the discussion that
31:45he had with Satan.
31:51HE NEVER REALLY KNEW WHY HE WAS GOING
31:53THROUGH WHAT HE WAS GOING THROUGH. He
31:56just knew that he was going through.
31:58Turn to your neighbor and ask them, "Are
32:00you going through
32:17You see, the truth of the MATTER IS, IF
32:19GOD WAS TO TELL YOU HIS PLAN, YOU
32:20COULDN'T handle it.
32:25>> And if you check the Bible, he told THE
32:27DISCIPLES ON MULTIPLE occasions that he
32:30would die. He told them and they said,
32:33"No, it's not going to happen." So,
32:36there's proof. If God was to lay out the
32:39plan for our lives,
32:42we couldn't handle it.
32:44So, whatever God keeps to himself, he
32:46keeps to himself.
32:52Jesus told the disciples, "This is going
32:54to happen. And if Jesus did not complete
32:58his mission, if he not if he did not GO
33:01TO THE CROSS OF CALVARY,
33:05we would not have the salvation today.
33:13We don't know the plan of God. [snorts]
33:17Everybody remember 2020?
33:21Let me let me let me remind you. Let me
33:23let me remind you. COVID
33:31[snorts]
33:3219
33:36took saints and sinners alike.
33:43[snorts] Then after COVID 19, we
33:44thought, man, we going to take a break.
33:47I'm just talking about our history now.
33:49I'm talking to us. [snorts] We talk we
33:52take a break and then one early Sunday
33:56morning [snorts] we got some bad news
34:01that our bishop was taken in our eyes
34:05much too early.
34:07[snorts]
34:12FAST [screaming] FORWARD
34:14A YEAR and a couple months
34:18[snorts]
34:19AND SOMEBODY RIDING A BICYCLE DOWN THE
34:21STREET SAID, "THE CHURCH IS ON FIRE."
34:24And I heard that somebody communicated
34:27to another person in Palm Beach and then
34:29I heard the person say, "How many souls
34:30got the Holy Ghost?
34:44>> [snorts]
34:44>> But unfortunately, it wasn't that kind
34:46of fire.
34:51[snorts]
34:53IT DISPLACED US FROM OUR SANCTUARY WHERE
34:56NOW WE have to have two services and
34:58you're sitting a little closer to your
35:00neighbor. That's probably not a bad
35:01thing though.
35:03[snorts]
35:09And I don't know about you, but I've had
35:12enough of funerals
35:15>> every week. It seems we got one
35:18every week. I know you you see the
35:21families out there and they're they're
35:22mourning and suffering and everything,
35:24but you have to realize there's there's
35:26500 of us and only one pastor.
35:36continue to pray for your pastor.
35:43>> GO A LITTLE FURTHER IN TIME
35:46AND A CATEGORY FIVE.
35:53Not four, not three, five.
35:56It almost was a six.
36:00RAN ACROSS JAMAICA and ravaged the city
36:04and killed some.
36:08THIS SEEMS LIKE A STORY OF JOB.
36:14CAN WE AT THIS MOMENT AND THIS season
36:18repeat what Job said,
36:21"Though he slay me."
