0:14that meeting. Amen. Go with me in your Bibles to the book of Nehemiah. Nehemiah
0:19chapter 1 is where we are today. Over the next several weeks, we're going
0:25to be working through a series entitled The Long Haul. Everybody say The Long
0:30Haul. The Long Haul and the gist behind this is to emphasize the longevity
0:36that it takes to remain committed to the call and the work of God.
0:42because the calling of God and the things that God will call us to do
0:48whether it's in your own family on your job in helping with the disciples somebody
0:53in the Lord it takes time it takes time little cushiony you've been serving the
0:59Lord for many years how many years did it cushiony she's like I don't remember
1:0550 years more than that right and do you still find a need to pray
1:11Yes, because it's a long distance journey of life. We must be in this for
1:17the long haul. Somebody say the long haul, the long haul. So today I want
1:23to speak to us from Nehemiah chapter 1, 1 and 2. I'll read verses 1
1:29to 4 of chapter 1 in your hearing. It reads like this. The words of
1:35Nehemiah, the son of Hekeliah, it came to pass in the month of Kishlev.
1:41In the 20th year, as I was in Shushan, the citadel, that
1:46Hananiah, one of my brethren, came with men from Judah, and I
1:52asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who had survived the
1:58captivity, and concerning Jerusalem. And they said to me, the survivors
2:03who are left from the captivity in the province are there in great
2:09distress and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down and its
2:15gates are burned with fire. So it was when I heard these words
2:21that I sat down and wept. mourned for many days
2:26I was fasting and praying before the God of
2:32heaven I want to speak to us today on
2:38this subject before the first stone before the first
2:43stone in 1947 33 year old evangelist Bob Pierce
2:49made his first of many missions to China and
2:55Asia There he witnessed the abject poverty,
3:00the squalor and disease affecting the people. There
3:06he met over 100 leprous men, women and
3:11children without medical attention, struggling to survive in
3:17the only place where they could find refuge
3:22in a cemetery. At that time, leprosy was
3:28such a grievous disease that sometimes they would execute these
3:34people and certainly they would excommunicate them from society. He
3:39saw the pain. He saw orphaned children with no one
3:45to care for them. He was so heartbroken by the
3:51immense suffering he saw among the people that it moved
3:56him to pray, quote, Let my heart be broken with
4:02the things that break the heart of God." He wrote this
4:08prayer in the fly leaf, that first leaf in the Bible.
4:13He wrote the prayer on that leaf and that prayer became
4:19a motivation, became a guiding principle as he dedicated his life
4:25to work to alleviate the sufferings he saw. and to
4:30serve the vulnerable. In 1950 he founded World Vision. In 1970
4:36he founded Samaritan's Purse. Both of these organizations even to this
4:42day are dedicated to raising funds and to organize medical efforts
4:47to dispossess peoples around the world. That's Bob Pierce. You might
4:53be a little more familiar with this other story.
4:58That in 1994, a church was relocated from 93rd
5:04Street to Cooper City. And the promise was made
5:09that there would be a lighthouse left in the
5:15southern regions of the Miami area that could meet
5:20the need of those people who were within this
5:26vicinity because people needed a lighthouse. That promise was not
5:32kept and for two years there was one man who lived in the area,
5:38shopped in the area, raised his family in the area. And for nearly
5:43two years he would commute through the area to his church that he
5:49faithfully served. Before the city was incorporated into Miami Gardens, he saw the
5:55poverty, the squalor, he saw the decadence of the city and he felt
6:01God moving on his heart to do something to alleviate not only the
6:07physical and the social distress But the underlying spiritual disorientation of a
6:13people who needed God. That man we've come to know as Bishop
6:19S. Robert Stewart. Then they called him Brother Bobby. Brothers and sisters,
6:25we see the pattern, the pattern in Bob Pierce's life. The
6:30pattern in Bishop Stewart's life. We see this same pattern appearing in the opening
6:36chapters of the book of Nehemiah. A man that was living in the luxury
6:42of the Persian palace at Susa. He was comfortable, he was secure, he was
6:48successful, he had his life together. But in a moment of time,
6:53God allowed him to see the plight and the destitution of the people
6:59of God who were living in Jerusalem. God allowed him to have a
7:05vision of a city that lay in ruins. And we see the
7:11entire book of Nehemiah is written to chronicle the efforts
7:16of this man to remedy the situation that God had
7:22allowed him to see. I want to submit to us brothers
7:28and sisters that these stories reveal to us something that is
7:33counterintuitive about the way that God works. You see, you and
7:39I, we spend our lives avoiding the feeling of brokenness, dodging
7:44pain and sidestepping anything that makes us uncomfortable. insulating ourselves from the harsh
7:50realities of the world around us. But yet the truth we see here
7:56is that anybody who is going to participate in God's mission to make
8:02this world a better place, a safe place, has got to feel the
8:07brokenness. About the things that God sees. Am I talking to anybody here? Could it
8:13be that one of the reason many of us can be comfortable with the routine
8:18of showing up on a Sunday and going back home and not caring anything about
8:23church or the church or the cause of the church or the cause of God's
8:27kingdom is that our hearts are not broken. now we've got people within the
8:33church who have no burden for the things that god is concerned about brothers and
8:39sisters it's not only bob pierce or bishop stewart or nehemiah but when you read
8:44to the scripture all of the great men and women that god used mightily in
8:50the kingdom of god they began their story by telling how they felt a burden
8:55that broke them am i talking to anybody here a burden that broke them down
9:01brokenness is the beginning of usefulness in the kingdom of god god can
9:07use you greatly in his kingdom until your heart can be broken and
9:13you can feel the burden that god feels for the lives of his
9:18people Oh, you've got to hear me. You've got to hear me in this house.
9:24And I know that we have made church into something that God did not intend
9:29for church to be. We have made church to be this place that we carefully
9:35curate everything that we do because don't you know that there is a consumer, a
9:40consuming market that's out there. We've got to make sure that we show only church
9:46the carefully choreographed aspects of our being together because that's what the market demands.
9:52That's what social media demands. But God is looking for a people who are
9:57not afraid to be broken for him when we see the messy dynamics of
10:03a world that needs God. Ask your neighbor, can God break your heart?
10:09Come on, ask him. Come on, ask him. Say, neighbor, I know you have your
10:14agenda. I know you only came to church to get your worship in and to
10:19get what's yours, to get your blessing. But do you have room on your schedule
10:23today for God to break your heart with something that breaks his heart? Oh, God,
10:28I feel the Holy Ghost in here. Because before God can use you to build
10:34anything great, before God can use you to accomplish anything great in the kingdom
10:40of God, he's got to break you down with a burden for the things
10:45of God. Oh, every one of these biblical prophets that wrote the word of
10:51God, they were not in this for money. I'm sorry to disappoint you.
10:57but if your prayer to god is i can't serve you if i'm broke
11:02something is wrong with you those who know you know but here is the
11:08deal all of these men and women of god i see a witness over
11:14there they they they started their journey of ministry They started out saying the
11:20burden that the Lord allowed me to see and to feel. God's got to let
11:26us see and feel the burden. We will never win the loss. We will never
11:31disciple those whom God is bringing in our midst unless we feel the burden. Am
11:37I talking to anybody here? Unless our hearts are open to feeling the burden, we
11:43can't serve God effectively. So Nehemiah's journey into effective ministry that has caused
11:49his name to be chronicled in the pages of history so that you and I
11:55in 2026 can be reading about him. Before Nehemiah did laid one stone, before he
12:01laid the first stone that built the building of the temple, he had a burden.
12:07He had a burden for the people. Somebody say the burden for the people.
12:13His story begins with the burden for the people. Nehemiah chapter 1 verses
12:191 to 11. He felt a burden for the people. we cannot
12:24serve God effectively without the burden for the people ask your neighbor neighbor do
12:30you feel the burden come on ask him do you feel the burden do
12:36you feel when you read the prayer list do you just see names on
12:41the list or do you catch a burden for the people am I talking
12:47to anybody here do you feel the burden for the people oh Shama
12:53Hallelujah. Hallelujah. It was brokenness that started Nehemiah's willingness
12:59to serve in the kingdom of God. It was that sense of a
13:04burden, a passion to alleviate the circumstances, the deplorable condition of the people
13:10of Jerusalem that launched Nehemiah into the great rebuilding campaign for which he
13:16became famous across the world. But that didn't just begin with his engineering
13:22skills. No, it began with the burden it began firstly with a burden to
13:28inquire everybody see a burden to inquire in verses 1 to 3 Nehemiah cared enough
13:33to ask the hard question to ask what's going on over there in Jerusalem I'm
13:39sure that Nehemiah all this time had been had been praying like all the others
13:44praying for God to send some deliverance to send somebody to help the people but
13:50but for the first time he actually asked He inquired what's happening over there in
13:55Jerusalem. What's going on with the people of God? I've heard any reports. It's not
14:00like now where you can see everything on the news, everything on television, everything on
14:05social media. No, but he had to ask the question. And I wonder if there
14:10is anybody in this house That God has been laying somebody on your heart. That
14:15God has been laying an heir of ministry on your heart. A community on your
14:20heart. And a need on your heart. Maybe a family member on your heart. And
14:24today, God is saying, can't I burden you enough that you are so burdened that
14:29you will dare to inquire. That you'll dare to pick your phone up and to
14:34make a call and to say, hey, how are you doing? What's going on? am
14:40i talking to anybody here it it began with a burden to inquire sometimes brothers
14:45and sisters you and i we ask people how they're doing in passing it's just
14:50a thing how are you doing and by the time you say hey how are
14:55you doing hey what's going on over here you're on to the next thing can
15:01i challenge us the next time you ask somebody how are you doing look them
15:06in the eyes i feel the holy ghost in here look them in the eyes
15:12really care about how they're doing because chances are god allowed you to ask that
15:17question you don't know what they were on their way to maybe you were the
15:23last stop before they carried out their suicidal ideation but god had you there to
15:28ask how are you doing if we'll just pay attention burden a burden to inquire
15:34sometimes people around us may look strong like they have it together they are the
15:40ones who care and carry everybody and because they look so strong we don't even
15:45think about what they're going through But can you turn to a neighbor now
15:51and say, neighbor, hey, really, really, how are you doing? Come on, ask him. Say,
15:57neighbor, how are you doing? Is there something that I can help you to pray
16:03about? Is there something that I can help you to take to the Lord in
16:09prayer? He dared to inquire. When he heard the report he was devastated by it.
16:14The Bible said they told him in verse 3 that the people are in great
16:19trouble and shame. And the wall of Jerusalem is broken down. He heard the true
16:24report and I thank God that he didn't just turn his ears to it and
16:30say, "Alright, good. Thank you for telling me." And just continued with life as though
16:36nothing ever happened. But the burden to inquire when he heard how devastating the condition
16:42was, the burden to inquire became the burden to intercede. Somebody shout the burden to
16:47intercede. the burden to intercede when he heard he started to intercede he began to
16:53pray for the people brothers and sisters i want you to understand this that intercession
16:58is not the ministry of a few but it is the responsibility of every one
17:04of us in the house brothers and sisters says paul he says that intercessions and
17:09prayers must be made for who for all all people and then for people who
17:14are in authority it is our call to intercede but why was Nehemiah able to
17:20intercede it's in verse 4 because when he heard he was consumed with remorse in
17:25verse 4 there was a consuming remorse that came over him as soon As I
17:31heard these words, I sat down and I wept and mourned for certain days. I
17:37sat and I wept for days. But when you look at this, Nehemiah said he
17:43wept for days. But you don't understand how long he wept, how protracted the season
17:49of mourning was for him until you look at the timelines. He said he heard
17:54the story in the month of Kishlev. but he stood before
18:00the king in the month of nisan that is to say for four
18:06months He was so burdened and so grieved by the conditions of the people that
18:12for four months when he sat down to eat, he had to push the plate
18:17aside and just cry. Is there anybody in the house that when you see the
18:22conditions of people around you, when you see the plight of what people are going
18:27through, that you are not impelled to criticize, but you feel the grief, you feel
18:33the pain, you feel the mourning every time you think about it tears come to
18:38your eyes am I talking to anybody when you think about broken marriages you still
18:43cry about them am I talking to anybody here when you think about those who
18:48are sick and in the hospital you still feel the burden it's been a while
18:54but you still feel the burden for it brothers sisters God is calling for us
18:59to feel the burdens I'm so glad that Nehemiah didn't shut his heart
19:05to the emotions he felt. I'm glad he didn't deny it. I'm glad he didn't
19:10just try to wave a wand over it and say, this is not happening. God's
19:16people can't have cancer. Am I talking to anybody? Lean in there for a second.
19:21Because a lot of times we have replaced, we have avoided feeling the emotions by
19:27using our spiritual jargons to try to target away the pain and the
19:32real pain that people are going through how do you
19:38tell how do you tell parents who are grieving over
19:43something that has happened to their child just trust God
19:49man God know what's going to happen how how
19:54do you dare say to the person that's mourning for the loss of a loved
19:59one oh god had his guard in heaven and he saw your loved one and
20:04just plucked the garden because he went come on zion am i talking to anybody
20:09here we we hide away from the reality of emotions because we want to sound
20:13spiritual but here's the deal we won't really begin to do what god wants us
20:18to do until we open our hearts to the emotions that god wants us to
20:23feel Let yourself feel it. Let yourself feel it until
20:28it breaks your heart. let yourself feel it until tears flow down your eyes can
20:34I talk to us here that I know I know I've heard people talking about
20:38the church and they say oh ain't no party but like a Holy Ghost party
20:43because the Holy Ghost party won't stop well I'm here to I can I can
20:47I just throw some some water on your parade it's not always a Holy Ghost
20:51party is there anybody in the church who knows that serving the Lord is not
20:55always a party sometimes it's a burden Sometimes it's
21:01a burden. Sometimes you wrestle with the real brokenness. Sometimes for days you carry the
21:07sorrow. I feel like preaching here. Sometimes it takes your sleep away. Sometimes it takes
21:13your peace away. But you feel the burden for what is going on around you.
21:19I'm not talking to anybody here. My God, somebody ought to catch a burden for
21:25young people. Somebody ought to catch a burden for the people of God. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
21:31Hallelujah. Hallelujah. It was the burden to inquire and the burden to intercede. Brothers and
21:37sisters, the burden to inquire that led to the burden to intercede. It was the
21:42remorse that he felt that led him into prayer, into contract repentance in verses 5
21:48to 7. Brothers and sisters, let me share this with us as somebody who is
21:54familiar with grief and brokenness. Here it is. Grief and brokenness for the people we
21:59love. And the atrocities that we see around us,
22:05they can consume us. They can make us discouraged
22:10and depressed. Unless, oh my God, unless it will
22:16wear you out. when you care for people and you're concerned it will
22:21wear you out unless and until your tears meet your theology am I talking to
22:26anybody until you say I know how to cry but I also know a God
22:31am I talking to anybody it's it's It's when your grief meets your God. It's
22:36when your worry meets the word of God. It's when your pain finds a way
22:41in prayer. It's when you take it to the Lord in prayer. Oh, what needs
22:46we often forfeit. Oh, what needless pains we bear. All because we refuse to carry
22:51everything to God in prayer. I may not. be able to heal but I know
22:55a God who can I may not be able to bring a marriage back together
23:00but I know a God who can take you to the Lord in prayer Nehemiah
23:05brought it to the Lord in prayer he began to to confess and I want
23:09you to hear the prayer of this man of God he first of all he
23:14acknowledged God in everything Oh Lord God of heaven the great and awesome God who
23:18keeps covenant you still love your people the person I feel burdened for you love
23:22them more than I do the one that I so badly want to see get
23:27healed you want to see them healed am I talking to anybody you love them
23:31more than I do am I talking to anybody the people that I want to
23:35see saved get off drugs whatever it is you love them more than I do
23:39so I bring them to you oh God I can't do anything about it but
23:44I know a God who can I know you are able to do exceeding abundantly
23:48above all we can ask or think they may be written off but in your
23:52book you are still able to turn their lives around Somebody shout he's able. Hallelujah.
23:58Say he's able. You and I might not be able to do it, but I
24:03know the God who can. Is there anybody in here? You can save a soul,
24:08but I know a God who can save to the uttermost. I know a
24:14God who can and then in verses 6 and 7 he began to to confess
24:19the sin before the Lord but listen to the prayer of Nehemiah because there's something
24:24we can learn here he he prayed and he confessed their sin he said we
24:29have sinned against you my father's house and I Nehemiah was not a part of
24:34the problem that caused Jerusalem to be broken down he was not even living in
24:38Jerusalem as far as I know he had never been to Jerusalem but he said
24:43he we I am a part of the problem I want you to lean in
24:48here for a second because until we get the heart that you you and I
24:53are not not better than the people God has called us to serve. I feel
24:57the Holy Ghost here. We will never serve with the kind of compassion. We will
25:02pretend that we are serving but we see ourselves as being better than the people
25:06God has called us to serve. Brothers and sisters, I want to tell you this.
25:11I want to burst your bubble for a second here. Can I interrupt our self-righteousness?
25:16Yeah, yeah, like Nehemiah. When God place a burden on your heart it will break
25:21your self-righteousness when the burden was on Nehemiah's heart and he began to pray he
25:26remembered that fear goes you and I except for the grace of God yeah yeah
25:31yeah yeah that person that is on drugs I could be there too had it
25:36not been for the grace of God the person that is homeless you and I
25:41could be there too except for the grace of God am I talking to anybody
25:47in this house yeah the person that's addicted to alcohol didn't start out that way
25:52but they couldn't cope with their reality and one drink led to another drink led
25:57to another drink until they're hooked am I talking to anybody and if you and
26:01I dealt with some of the things that they dealt with without the fact of
26:06growing up in church fear goes goes you and I except for the grace of
26:11God I feel like preaching in here God is trying to tell you if you're
26:17going to serve effectively don't act like you're better than the people he has called
26:22you to serve some days he's got to make you sit where they are sitting
26:28I thank God for my background in the church. I thank God for growing up
26:33in the church but I remember every day when I see young men who are
26:38whiling out in the streets to find their satisfaction or purpose in the gang culture.
26:44I remind myself that I could easily have been there had God not intervene early
26:49in my life am I talking to anybody here yeah yeah anybody that you see
26:54doing anything on the street you will feel more compassion for them if you begin
26:59to realize that just just a step different in in your life and you could
27:05be right down there too somebody shout but God I could have been down there
27:10I could have been out there but Oh God, so I can
27:16act like I'm better than anybody else. Forgive me, Lord, for we have gone
27:22awry. I feel the Holy Ghost in this place. Can you lift your
27:27hand in this place right now as a God? I'm not better than anybody. I'm
27:32not better than my neighbor. I know I see them acting crazy I'm not better
27:38than the young people who I see whiling out I could have been there too.
27:43In fact a lot of you were there too, but God I feel the Holy
27:48Ghost here So I pray with empathy and I act with compassion because I know
27:53I could have been there Hallelujah Hallelujah. In verses 8 to 10 he says, God,
27:58remember your covenant. Hallelujah. Remember you said that if my people who are called by
28:04my name, hallelujah, if they will humble themselves and pray. they'll seek my face if
28:09they'll turn from their wicked ways because here's the deal here is it again God's
28:14people got some wicked ways am I talking to anybody lean in here you may
28:19not be out there but you got some wicked ways but if my people Lord
28:23help me here who are called by my name will get off their high horses
28:28if they will humble themselves if they will pray if they if they will seek
28:33my face if they'll turn around from their wicked ways I'll hear them
28:39from heaven I'll forgive their sins and I'll raise up an army including
28:44them so my land can be healed so my people can be ministered
28:50to if my people I feel the Holy Ghost here hallelujah hallelujah he
28:55he the burden that made him inquire the burden that made him intercede
29:01was a burden in verse 11 that made him intervene somebody shout he
29:07intervened he inquired he interceded but in verse 11 we see him i
29:13had changing gears in his prayer because to this point he had been
29:18asking god to send somebody but in verse 11 nehemiah changes tone and
29:24says god give your servant success today hallelujah by granting me favor in the
29:30presence of the king he began to realize that he was the answer to his
29:35prayer he began to realize that he was a solution he began to realize that
29:41there was nobody better better position to help the plight that he saw than he
29:46was hear me brothers and sisters Saint Augustine says that we ought to pray like
29:50everything depended on God and then get up from prayer and act like everything depends
29:55on us you gotta hear me now the thing you are praying about the problem
30:00you have seen what God is saying is I show it to you because you
30:04are a part of the solution am I talking to anybody here quit waiting around
30:09for God to send somebody else to solve the problem in your family quit waiting
30:13around for God to send somebody else to work on the problem you see in
30:18the church God is saying I gave you the the burden because you are the
30:22man you are the woman somebody lay your hand on your chest right now and
30:27say I am the one God has shown me the burden and I hear God
30:32saying change your prayer change your tune stop asking me to send somebody else and
30:38raise your hand hallelujah and say here am I Lord send me send me Lord
30:43for I'll go I'll go where you want me to go I'll do what you
30:48want me to do Oh, the burden to intervene. Hallelujah. He became
30:54the answer to the problem. And once he had a willingness to intervene, God was
31:00getting ready to make a way. You may not see the way right now, but
31:05let me tell you this. If God sees that willingness arises in your heart from
31:11the burden he has given you, it might take a while, but it's going to
31:17open a door some way, somehow. I feel the Holy Ghost here. We see
31:23Nehemiah move from the burden for the people to the boldness of the petition in
31:28verses 1 to 9 of chapter 2. He, firstly, he had to await the right
31:33moment. Somebody say, await the right moment. In verses 1 to 3, he awaited the
31:38right moment because you see, I am learning more and more that God doesn't work
31:44the way some of us think God works. there's a lot of us who think
31:49that we can twist god's hand behind his back we can curry favor god God
31:52we can hurry God with our so-called idea of faith in God for we have
31:57painted faith as a tool that manipulates God to do things when we want it
32:01how we want it in our time but can I tell you come on lean
32:05in here for a second the biblical idea of faith is not that it is
32:10faith the trust in God that when he's ready that's the right time when he
32:14does it that's what I might talking to anybody it's it's it's like it's like
32:19a saying that he may not come when we want him I feel God in
32:24here but he'll be there right on time somebody shall wait on the Lord yeah
32:30yeah yeah wait on the Lord it may seem sometimes that God is not doing
32:36anything yeah he never gets in a hurry Asia he never gets in a hurry
32:42You can't rush God into doing anything. I'm not talking to anybody because God never
32:47gets in a hurry. We might as well get on God's agenda and on God's
32:53timeline. Nehemiah carried this burden for four long months and all the time God was
32:58working. Working inside of Nehemiah. You got to hear me now. lot of times we
33:04want God to change things around us and God is saying no no no I'm
33:08gonna let this linger for a little bit I'm gonna just simmer in this for
33:12a while yes I know it's hurting you yes I know you feel burdened and
33:16heavy you are almost at the point of depression and discouragement but but I can
33:20handle that just just keep on coming to me just keep on talking to me
33:25because though I'm not changing things around you I'm changing things inside you I feel
33:30the Holy Ghost yeah yeah because you can't wait on God and he not change
33:36they that wait hallelujah upon the Lord what happens they shall renew their strengths and
33:41when God gets ready they shall mount up with wings like eagles they shall run
33:46and not be weary they shall walk and not faint you ought to be praying
33:51right now Lord teach me how to wait let me not hurry like Moses and
33:57intervene in my own flesh he waited patiently for the Lord and while he was
34:02waiting God was working in him to make him strong enough to do what he
34:07needed to do to make him bold enough for the task that was at hand
34:12that's what we need I just need God to work in me because it's a
34:16partnership I don't want God to fix everything in my life and in my family
34:20no I want God to fix some things in me and then use me to
34:24fix the things I see do I have anybody else in here Lord you Lord
34:28you don't have to do all of it if you just work in me I
34:33feel the Holy Ghost in here if you just work on me and then release
34:38me and through your help I can do some things in your kingdom am I
34:43talking to anybody in this place oh I feel the Holy Ghost in here when
34:47God opened the door for him nehemiah was so changed by god he didn't ask
34:53for frivolous things he asked for what matters in verses 49 we see nehemiah asking
34:59for what really matters brothers and sisters oh if god would just give us carte
35:04blanche right now what would you ask for what would you ask for maybe things
35:10to line your own pocket maybe things for your own blessing and your own
35:16prosperity but god has to let us simmer so long until he detaches us
35:22from our selfish self-centered egotistic ways and begin to inculcate in us an other
35:27centeredness a desire not only to look out for what we need but to
35:33look out for what others need yeah so what matters he asked the lord
35:39for authority. When the king said to him, hey, hey, Nehemiah, how may I help
35:44you? This, if we go back to chapter 1 verse 11 in the contemporary English
35:49version, it says, Nehemiah prayed like this, quote, when I serve the king his wine
35:55today, make him please with me and have him do what I ask, unquote. That
36:00was really the prayer of Nehemiah. He had asked God, open a door for me.
36:05Let the king have compassion on me. Let him ask me what it is that
36:10I want. Hallelujah. And if I see that happening, I know the time is right.
36:14When the king I feel the Holy Ghost here. When the king opened his mouth
36:18and said to Nehemiah, hey, what is it that I may do for you? Nehemiah
36:22turned away. The Bible said, Nehemiah turned away in verse 4. He turned away and
36:26he prayed to God. Am I talking, it wasn't a long prayer, but it was
36:29a strong prayer. He turned his face to God and he asked the Lord for
36:33the authority. He turned his face to the Lord. Has anybody been praying for something
36:37for a long time and then somebody you just see the door halfway open and
36:41you just turn your face to God I said Lord I thank you I feel
36:45the Holy Ghost is there anybody who knows that quick prayer you prayed for nine
36:49months you pray for ten years I don't know how long you prayed but you
36:53see the door open slightly and you just turn away and say to God Lord
36:58I thank you thank you for the authority thank you for the access thank you
37:02for the boldness he turned to God and he asked God give me the authority
37:07because you see what Nehemiah was called to was not just a physical task it
37:13was not just social justice lean in here for a second we must never trade
37:19the power of the gospel for a social gospel because a social gospel fasting from
37:25Target when you could get some cheaper at Target you'd say oh well we're on
37:30a Target fast the devil is a liar if it's cheaper at Target that's where
37:36I'm going I didn't see anybody fasting when Target put out all of
37:42those color rainbow stuff and put out pinup thing for boys. I didn't see
37:48those church fasting. Did they? But all of a sudden now you want to fast
37:53on target. I'm not telling you where to shop. All I'm saying is it's going
37:58to take more than that because what God has called us to do is not
38:03just about social justice. God wants us to work to change something deep in the
38:07hearts and the spirits of people so that he can help them alleviate physical circumstances
38:12around them. He said, God, I want authority from you. What I need from you,
38:18the king can't give it. I need to ask the king, verse 5 to 8,
38:23I need to ask the king for authorization, for permission to do the work because
38:28I respect his authority. But here is the deal, for what you want to happen
38:32in the lives of these people, his authority alone is not enough. I need your
38:37authority. Am I talking to anybody? Lean in here for a second. Surely there may
38:41be some people that you need to go to and ask your blessing. Maybe you
38:45might need to talk to your pastor. Maybe your parents if you're a younger person.
38:49Maybe your spouse. Maybe your boss. I don't know whose blessing you might need to
38:52ask to do what God has laid on your heart to do. Maybe it's a
38:56Bible study on the job and you need your boss's permission. Am I talking to
39:00anybody here? Yeah, yeah, yeah. You may need their permission but you need divine authority
39:05from God for what you're up against is more than social and physical
39:10it's spiritual somebody holla I need God's authority and he's got authority. he
39:16asked the Lord for authority. he asked the king for authorization. he asked the governors
39:21for access in verse 9 because hear me brothers and sisters and the governors had
39:25to open up and give him what God, I feel the Holy Ghost here, the
39:29resources that he needed to do what God had put in his heart to do.
39:34when God puts a burden on you and he says now is the time, tell
39:38me who can stand before you. tell me who can keep you out of what
39:43God has feel him in here has sent you to do. Somebody shout hallelujah. Let
39:48me close. Let me close brothers and sisters. So it started with the burden for
39:54the people. It started with the boldness of the petition but then in verse in
40:00verses 11 to 20 of chapter two we see the beginning of the plan. Hear
40:06me. Because what God wants you to do. It can't just be ad hoc.
40:12It can't be confused and all over the place. God wants us to
40:18be strategic in what He has called us to do. So we see
40:24Nehemiah beginning to hatch the plan that would enable him to finish the
40:30building once he started. He began to lay out the plan that would
40:35help him to rebuild the people's lives once he started. Why? Jesus said
40:41to the Pharisees, you go across the globe to make one disciple
40:47only to make them twice a child of the devil. Anybody read that?
40:53Sometimes it were better and this might sound some kind of way that
40:59we had not intervened in a situation than to intervene and make it
41:04worse because then we make people doubt God especially when you open your
41:10mouth and say God said. Am I talking to anybody here? Yeah,
41:16yeah. Sometimes it's not that God isn't calling us, but it's that we're not
41:22strategizing with God to do this thing. That's why God made him wait. God
41:28made him strategize. Ah, my father. He strategized. And he, first of all, he
41:33had proximity, deliberate proximity. Verse 11, I'm almost through here. He went to live
41:39among the people. He went where the people were. Can I
41:45tell you that before we can be effective, sometimes God wants us to sit
41:51where the people are sitting. He wants you to have conversations.
41:57He wants you to not just hear it at a distance but see it upfront.
42:02To feel it for yourself. Am I talking to anybody here? That's why Nehemiah he
42:07went to Jerusalem. He went among the rubble. He went among the ruins. He went
42:12right there where he could feel the conditions that the people were in. That is
42:18why Jesus moved to Nazareth. That's why Bishop Stewart lived in Miami Gardens because there
42:23is a view and when I was moving here he said to me, I want
42:27you in the city. He said I need you to live in the city.
42:33Am I leaning here for a second? That's what he said to me. He said
42:38I need you to live in the city because sometimes for you to accurately assess
42:44the need you need to be in the... Am I talking to anybody here? Come
42:49off your high horses. Come off your pumps. Get among the people that God desires
42:54for you to serve. Ah Shama. He had deliberate proximity. Verses 12 to 16, he
43:00discerned privately. He went to observe the rubble and the ruins by himself. He didn't
43:06bring anybody with him. Because sometimes our plans fail not because God wasn't in it,
43:12but because we talked too quickly. Because we shared it too fast and we allowed
43:18people to talk us out of it. Yeah, we allow people to talk us
43:23out of it because we talk too quickly. Sometimes you need to discern privately. Sometimes
43:29pray and ruminate on what God is saying to you before you can prescribe a
43:35cure, before God can use you in that way. He wants you to discern the
43:41conditions privately. And then verses 17 to 18, and almost to he developed partnerships. He
43:46began to find people because chances are what you're feeling, Dr. Gibbs, you are not
43:51the only one feeling it. maybe there is somebody else in the house in whose
43:55heart God has also placed that burden and as you begin to talk as you
44:00begin to share Nehemiah said to them he said come let us build the wall
44:04verse 17 of Jerusalem that we may no longer be a reproach that we may
44:09no longer feel the shame that is to say they also felt the shame is
44:13there anybody here I just need God to connect me with a few people who
44:17feel what I feel is there anybody in the house is that your prayer in
44:21the house is it do you want to get your hand up right now I
44:25said God I just need you to connect me I don't need a whole lot
44:29of people but if you can connect me with just a few people who can
44:32feel the burden I feel who can feel the hurt who can feel the pain
44:36I feel people who will join me in prayer, who will join me in fasting,
44:42but will also join me in doing the work of alleviating, of rebuilding. Am I
44:48talking to anybody here? I just need a few people. I need a few people
44:53hallelujah who will say to me what the folks at the Nehemiah let us rise
44:57up and build I feel the Holy Ghost in here let's rise up and build
45:02let's rise up and build up these young people let's rise up and build up
45:06these marriages let's rise up and rebuild our families am I talking to anybody here
45:12let's rise and build a Sunday school let's rise and do this thing for the
45:17Lord I feel the Holy Ghost and then the Bible said that they set their
45:23hands to the work why don't you shake somebody's hand and say neighbor come on
45:28shake somebody's hand and say neighbor we are in this thing together we will and
45:33set our hands to do the work. I feel the Holy Ghost here. Come on,
45:38tell somebody else on the other side. Say, neighbor, we are in this thing together.
45:44We will arise and build. We will set our hand to the work. No more
45:49standing on the outside and saying, let them do it, but we will do it.
45:54Is there anybody in this house that want to shout it in here today? Say,
45:59Lord, consume me with a burden let me feel a burden for you come on
46:04say it in here let me feel a burden for you let me feel a
46:09burden for your people so that I don't wait on anybody I feel the Holy
46:14Ghost in here but we will arise and build we will do it we will
46:20do it we will do it we will do it Oh, I feel the Holy
46:24Ghost in this place. Can I close in here brothers and sisters? Ah yes, ah
46:30yes, ah yes. There was deliberate proximity. There was a discerning privately. There was a
46:35developing of partnership. But I love verses 19 and 20 that even though the people
46:40were with him, but I hear Nehemiah saying to the naysayers and the opposition, to
46:45the Sanballat and the Tobias's of the world, he said to them, I know we're
46:50a small people. I know it's but a few of us. I know that the
46:56problem has been going on for so many years, for 70 years and then some.
47:01The problems have been going on. But hear me, the God of heaven, I feel
47:06the Holy Ghost in here, he will prosper us and therefore we his servants will
47:11arise and we will build. Is there anybody in the house that know that when
47:16you put your hand to the task that the God of heaven he will give
47:21you prosperity he will give you success he will make it happen he will tear
47:25down the high places before you I heard him saying that I will make the
47:30darkness light before you I feel the Holy Ghost here I'm a little preaching here
47:34for a little while I said I'll make the darkness light before you and the
47:39high place I said the high place I'll bring them down for
47:45when you walk by the way I'll lead you and on the fatness of the
47:51land I'll feed you I feel the Holy Ghost in this place and the high
47:57place the high places that are standing in your way will bring them down you
48:03might not be able to tear them down but if you will go i'll tear
48:09them down if you will pray i'll tear them down if you'll witness i'll tear
48:15if you share I tear them down somebody say God will do it somebody
48:21say God will do it come on talk to your neighbor in the house
48:26say neighbor if you just get a burden for it say neighbor come on
48:32tell him say neighbor if you get a burden for it if you'll pray
48:38about it if you'll arise to do it God will he'll make Out
48:43of no way God will give you strength that you didn't know you
48:49have. I feel the Holy Ghost in here. He'll give you people you
48:55didn't know were with you. He'll give you resources because when you put
49:01your hand to the plow, God will make a way. Won't he do
49:07it? Won't he do it? Won't God do it? right i
49:13feel like preaching in here my soul is on fire now
49:18i say won't he do it is a god able won't
49:24he make a way won't he heal bodies won't he turn
49:29lives around somebody say yeah say yeah yes he will yeah Yes,
49:35he will. Yes, he will. I feel all right now. If
49:41you get a burden for it, if you pray about it,
49:47if you arise to do it, the God of heaven, he'll
49:53prosper us. He'll give us the resources. He'll give us a
49:59way. Yes, he will. Not your neighbor as I close. Everybody's standing.
50:04Not your neighbor as I close. And say neighbor. If you just have the
50:10burden, hallelujah. Come on, tell him, say neighbor. If you can catch the burden,
50:16say neighbor. If you can allow your heart to be broken, God will do
50:22it, hallelujah. God will help you. He'll be your helper. If you arise and
50:27decide to build, he will help you. If you've got a burden and if
50:33you arise to build, the God. will prosper us

52:05in my spirit that we're not just rebuilding a physical church we are rebuilding

52:17a strong youth ministry we're rebuilding a strong Sunday school am I talking to
52:23anybody here? we are rebuilding people I feel like preaching in here I said
52:29we're rebuilding If you catch a burden and if you
52:34pray the God of heaven He shall prosper us
52:40Therefore we will arise and rebuild I want you
52:46to hear me God wants to speak today to
52:52our heads our hearts and our hands Maybe you
52:58are in here God has been laying something at your
53:04doorstep for the last several months, weeks, maybe years, and you have decided not
53:10to pay attention to it. I want to engage your head today. God
53:15wants you to begin to pay attention to it. He wants you to look at
53:20it. I know it hurts you to see the young people sometime in the condition
53:25they're in. I know it hurts you to see the marriages in the condition they're
53:30in. I know it might hurt you to see things not the way you think
53:35it should be. But God says don't look away. Don't turn away. Look at it.
53:39Ask about it. I feel the Holy Ghost. He says engage your head. But then
53:44he says engage your heart. engage your heart allow yourself to feel
53:50the pain to feel the hurt stop telling yourself I deny it I reject it
53:56this is not so no no no if it is so it is so am
54:01I talking to anybody in this house if the child is on drugs they are
54:06on drugs am I talking to anybody and you talking about who I deny who
54:11I bind this I blood this up I didn't that's not helping God said feel
54:16the pain of it don't deny it feel the burden and allow the burden to
54:21drive you to prayer oh Shama I want to speak to your head pay attention
54:26to what's going on I want to speak to your heart allow yourself to feel
54:30it feel the heaviness of your addiction if you are the problem right now feel
54:35the heaviness of your own addiction I feel the Holy Ghost here but God says
54:40I want to engage your head your hand your head your heart and also your
54:44hand I need you to get up and do something about it but it begins
54:49with a burden I want to open this altar right now to somebody maybe you
54:54are still the one dealing with the problem maybe you are dealing with your own
54:59addictions your own sin that seem insurmountable your life is in ruins and you feel
55:04like you can't get over it but i want to introduce you to a god
55:09that is able to do something in you if you don't have the holy ghost
55:13he can fill you with the holy ghost and use you to rebuild to rebuild
55:17the ruins of your own life am i talking to anybody he can give you
55:21strength you shall receive power when the holy ghost comes upon you if that is
55:26you in the house i want you to come to this altar today we want
55:30to pray for you if that is you if you are the one struggling if
55:34you are the one struggling with your own life that seemed to be falling apart
55:39I hear God saying come here let me put the Holy Ghost in you
55:45God I feel you here so that I can give you the power to
55:50rebuild or maybe maybe for somebody else you feel a burden and you want
55:56God to open a door for you a door to execute the burden you
56:02want God to give it a boldness you need to talk to a boss
56:08a husband a wife a son a daughter a But you want the boldness.
56:13It starts with feeling that burden. Bring that to God in prayer. If you want
56:18to come to the altar, you can come. If you want to pray where you
56:24are, you can pray. But I want us all today to bring that area of
56:29prayer to God. I hope to God that there is nobody in here that says,
56:34Pastor, I just don't feel a burden. Because if you don't, if you're a child
56:39of God and you don't feel a burden, maybe you should ask God for one
56:44right now. You can't serve God effectively without a burden. You can't. You can't teach
56:49in the school without a burden. You can't lead without a burden. I
56:55feel God in here. You may say I'm just an usher. I'm just
57:01a greeter. Hold on. Let me tell you this. You serve in a
57:06ministry that is called the doorkeeper in the house of the Lord. It
57:12was a Levitical ministry. They had to search a sacrifice. they had
57:18to make sure that whatever entered the house was good
57:23am i talking to anybody here where you are serving
57:29is powerful you need a burden for the lord and
57:34for the lost if you don't have the burden ask

64:04Firstly, if you don't feel a burden for anyone or anything,
64:09I beg of you this week, ask God, place a burden
64:15on my heart. Open my heart to see a need and
64:21then give me the strength of character to care
64:27Because if you care you will feel a burden for all the names in
64:33our prayer list for all that has been happening in our church over the
64:38last few months. If you don't feel a burden ask God this week Lord
64:44help me feel even the God in flesh in earth had the burden. He
64:50said my passion for the Lord's house is consuming me. That's what he meant
64:55when he said the zeal of the Lord's house has eaten me up. He
65:01was consumed. with a passion and a burden. We can't be Christians
65:07without a burden. Our prayer lives can't be full without a burden. Haposhama
65:13ilobosah. Pray for a burden and if you already have one keep on
65:19praying for God to give you the open door you need. The people
65:24you need, the resources you need, the access you need to carry it
65:30out. If you need to talk to your pastor, if you need to
65:36talk to your spouse, If you need to talk to your parents, share
65:42with them like Nehemiah to talk to the king. Share with them what God is
65:47laying on your heart. Do so. Have that conversation. But before we can rebuild what
65:53God is calling us to rebuild, there has to be a burden. Before the first
65:59stone can be laid, there has to be a burden. Before we can reenter the
66:04building with pomp and pageantry, there has to be a burden. Sheik Osiyah. And God
66:10is saying, I want you to linger in it and feel it. The collective
66:16you, not just you, the you is all of us, me included. Hallelujah. Join
66:21me in prayer right now. Father, in the name of the Lord Jesus, I
66:27know it is you. I know it is you that laid the series on
66:33my heart. Because preaching and teaching are the primary ways in which you allow
66:39the pastor to communicate your burden and your heart to the congregation as a
66:44whole. Lord, I have felt the burden and
66:50I felt the burden of preparing and delivering the
66:55sermon. Now I ask you today, transfer the burden.
67:01Transfer the burden to the hearts of every saint
67:06that is under the sound of this message. May
67:12we all with open hearts feel the burden for
67:17where we are. Not just temporary emotions, but a
67:23holy burden. a burden that breaks us a
67:29burden that consumes us a burden that comes out
67:35in our inquiry a burden that spurs intercession a
67:41burden that spurs our involvement in the interventive process
67:47that you have laid out for our church oh
67:53turn somebody's prayer today from let them do it
67:59to send me Lord, Hayah Shama Change somebody's
68:04prayer Lord to here am I Lord Send me I'm willing my heart
68:10is willing my hands are available my gifts my talents I lay them
68:16out before you my resources I put them on the table for your
68:22utility change our prayer of God may we pray the right thing may
68:27we intercede so much Until we come to the conclusion like Nehemiah did
68:33I am a part of the intervention Oh God, so that
68:39we can never approach our congregational commitments, in fact, approach our congregation as consumers,
68:45but as ones committed to the cause of Christ, committed to carrying the burden,
68:51committed to serving, committed to doing the will of the Lord, committed to doing
68:56what God has laid in my heart to do. I pray for those, Lord,
69:02who have been waiting for a long time for an open door. Let there
69:08be a conversation to this week. that will be the opening door they
69:13need for you have already placed the authority in their spirit to the Holy Ghost
69:19let there be a conversation today that grants the permission and the access to do
69:24what which you've called them to do what you're laying on their hearts to do
69:29not only in the four walls of the building but on their jobs at school
69:34in their communities in their own homes do it Lord for we are willing ha
69:40ha Shabbat do it Lord for our hearts are open do it lord our hands
69:46are ready our hands are ready our hands are ready our hands are ready i
69:51pray that as we leave this building that we realize that we are not leaving
69:56the mission field of the lord but we'll be in it tomorrow and also this
70:01week so we will work for you bring us safely home oh god and bring
70:06us safely back the next time we gather for worship in the name of the
70:11lord jesus we pray and everybody say in jesus name If you'll
70:17raise those right hands across this building. I feel
70:23the spirit of the Lord. Can we just linger
