Summary
Delivered at a New Year's Eve service, this sermon uses the story of Jonah and Nineveh to illustrate God's 'contract' with humanity: 'If you turn, I turn,' promising that God's mercy responds immediately to genuine repentance.
Key points
- •God offers a 'contract' of restoration: 'If you turn, I turn.' When humanity turns away from wickedness, God turns His heart toward mercy and relents from judgment.
- •Nineveh serves as a historical example of extreme cruelty and spiritual darkness, yet God’s desire was for their repentance rather than their destruction.
- •Jonah's name means 'dove' or 'peace,' suggesting that when God sends His servants, He is introducing the possibility of peace and righteousness into a chaotic or wicked environment.
- •The storms and winds mentioned in Jonah (North, South, East, and West winds) are often spiritual messengers used by God to bring about correction, change, or judgment.
- •Spiritual growth in the New Year requires a conscious turn away from 'mess' or unrighteousness, as God does not bless disobedience but waits to draw near to those who draw near to Him.

Life application
Identify one specific area of 'mess' or unrighteousness in your life and make a concrete 'turn' this week by confessing it to God and seeking accountability. Commit to pursuing peace and righteousness as you enter the new year, trusting that as you draw near to God, He will draw near to you.
Reflection questions
- In what ways have you been like Jonah, perhaps resisting God's call to show mercy to people you feel are undeserving?
- The speaker mentions that God 'never blesses a mess.' Is there a 'mess' in your life right now that is hindering you from experiencing God's full turn toward you?
- How does the history of Nineveh's cruelty help you understand the depth of God's patience and grace toward you?
- What does it look like for you to 'sign the contract' with God as you enter this New Year?

16:11Without any further delay, Elder Branhall
16:16come on let the Lord use
16:22you preach the Word of God
16:27to us in the name of
16:32Jesus. Hallelujah It's all about that
16:38name. The Bible says that God
16:43has highly exalted him and given
16:48him a name That is above
16:54every knee that at the name of Jesus
16:59every knee should bow and every tongue confess
17:06that Jesus Christ is Lord even to the glory
17:11of God the Father on this last day in
17:172024 do you just want to turn to your
17:22neighbor and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord hallelujah
17:28hallelujah hallelujah just use your tongue to confess that
17:33Jesus Christ is Lord One song's writer said,
17:39"He has risen from the dead and he is Lord."
17:45Every knee should bow and every tongue confess. Hallelujah. What
17:51a day that will be. Hallelujah. Thank you. It is
17:57my honor and privilege to stand here tonight in this
18:03wonderful assembly of people just to tell God thanks for
18:09what he has done for us. The truth be
18:14told, time cannot, we can't use time to really give God the
18:20glory. And so as I said, time is just a dress rehearsal
18:26of what heaven will be. Let me greet our pastor and our
18:32first lady pastor and sister Williams. Could we put our hands together
18:37for them? Bless God, we want to... Truly give God thanks for them
18:43and this work that they're doing under God. I want to greet my good friend,
18:48Lady Stewart. God bless you. All of my father's children, those who are visiting with
18:54us in-house and online, I greet you in the most exalted name of Jesus Christ.
18:59It's in Him that we move and breathe and have our being. I just want
19:05to quickly share with you the word that the Lord has laid on my heart.
19:11from the book of Jonah chapter 3. Jonah chapter 3 and I'm
19:17going to ask that you just pray for me. I'm feeling a
19:23little nagging at the back of my truth, but with God all
19:28things are possible. Jonah chapter 3, it has only 10 verses and
19:34so we want to go through them and then we hear what
19:40the Lord is saying. It says, "And the word of
19:46the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying, Arise, go unto
19:52Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I
19:57bid thee. So Jonah arose and went unto Nineveh according to the
20:03word of the Lord." Now, Nineveh was an exceeding great city of
20:09three days journey. And Jonah began to enter into the
20:14city a day's journey. And he cried and said, "Yet forty
20:20days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown." So the people of Nineveh
20:26believed God and proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth from
20:31the greatest of them even to the least of them. For
20:37the word came unto the king of Nineveh, And he
20:42arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from
20:48him, and covered him with a cloth, and sat in
20:53ashes. And he caused it to be proclaimed and published.
20:59So, in any way, by the decree of the king
21:04and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd
21:10nor flock, taste anything, Let them not feed nor
21:15drink water, but let man and beast be covered
21:21with the cloth and cry mightily unto God, yea,
21:26let them turn everyone from his evil way and
21:31from the violence that is in their hands. Who
21:37can tell if God will turn and repent? and
21:43turned away from this fierce anger that we perish not. And God
21:49saw their works that they turned from their evil way and God
21:55repented of the evil that He said He would do unto them
22:01and He did it not. I'm going to ask my little brother
22:06Elder Gregory Hall to just come and pray before we get into
22:12the Word. Heavenly Father, as your servant stand here
22:18to hear your word, mighty God, I pray that he will just be the
22:24oracle that you desire for him to be. Speak through him, mighty God. Let
22:30life be transformed. We give you thanks and praise for this day in Jesus'
22:36name. Amen. Before you sit, I just want to share the thought with you
22:42and I ask you to emphasize it with your neighbor. The contract on the
22:47last day of 2024, The Word of God
22:53to us is this: If you turn,
22:59I turn. Could you just repeat that
23:04to your neighbor? If you turn, I
23:10turn. When you turn, I turn. God
23:16bless you. You may be seated for
23:22a few minutes. Nineveh was established by
23:27Nimrod. who is introduced in Genesis chapter
23:3310 as a mighty hunter against God
23:39and served as the Assyrian Empire for
23:44many years. It came to prominence in
23:49the days of King Nacrib and we
23:55find out that Nineveh was a great
24:00city. For the Bible would have us know that it
24:06had 15 main gates. And a city is considered great based on
24:12the number of gates that it has. Many of us are very
24:18excited and can't wait to get into that new city, that new
24:24Jerusalem that the Bible tells us that have 12 main gates.
24:31the Assyrian Empire was known throughout the world and
24:36still is considered as one of the wickedest set
24:42of people that ever lived on the face of
24:48the earth they were cruel and you have to
24:54understand that Their main god was the
25:00goddess Ishtar who is believed to be
25:05the goddess of vengeance. And so they
25:11wanted to please Ishtar. And often times
25:17they would drain the blood of their
25:22victims. And literally paint the walls of
25:28the city with human blood.
25:34Not only was it stink and
25:40raw, but it attracted a lot
25:45of dead flies, which they thought
25:51that was also worship for the
25:56god Beelzebub, which is the lord
26:02of flies. Ninevites were so cruel.
26:08that they boasted how they would throw human bodies
26:14like clay. They would make walls out of human
26:19skulls. They would boast that they reddened deserts with
26:25blood and how they choked rivers with dead bodies.
26:31They would cut off the heads of kings and
26:37warriors and put it on their walls, nail it
26:43to their walls. as trophies and one of
26:49their favorite pastime was gambling how would they
26:54gamble they would get a pregnant woman and
27:00the bets would come in to see if
27:06the fetus was boy or girl and when
27:12all the bets were in they would just
27:18cut her belly to see who won and
27:24who lost cruelty Unimagined. So
27:29when God told Jonah, I
27:35want you to go to
27:40Nineveh with a message that
27:46says yet 40 days and
27:51Nineveh shall be destroyed. Jonah
27:57was not amused. Jonah was
28:02not just comfortable. that
28:08God wanted to show, uncomfortable that God wanted
28:14to show these people mercy, but he was
28:19very uncomfortable with who God wanted to use
28:25as the messenger. Jonah clearly understood
28:31that a message that says yet 40 days and
28:36Nineveh shall be destroyed is actually saying I am
28:42giving you 40 more days to continue doing what
28:48you're doing and only after 40 days will I
28:54take action Jonah was saying why not take action
28:59now Because they have been doing
29:05it a long time. And you're still
29:11giving them 40 days more. Not only
29:16was Jonah upset about that, but he
29:21was upset about God using him to
29:27carry the message. I was born
29:33and raised in the church and I've heard many messages preached about
29:38Jonah. But when God drew my attention to this word, God said,
29:44I'm going to show you something that you've never heard. He says
29:50the name Jonah means a dove and a dove is a representation
29:55of peace. If we could draw our memories
30:01back to Sunday school days, we remember that when Noah went into
30:07the ark and he sent out the raven and the raven didn't
30:12come back. He sent out a dove and when the dove came
30:18back with a branch in its mouth, it was telling Noah that
30:24the earth is becoming peaceable again. And we
30:29remember when Jesus was being baptized, the Holy
30:35Spirit descended on him like a dove, symboling
30:40peace with God. And so Jonah understood that
30:45God, if you send me, Personally me, Jonah, what
30:51you're doing is you're sending peace within the walls of Nineveh.
30:57And the last thing Nineveh needs is peace.
31:07Not only are you sending peace within the walls of Nineveh,
31:12but if I go to Nineveh while I am there, it
31:18means righteousness would have come within the walls of Nineveh. Because
31:24righteousness is defined as having peace with God. So Jonah said,
31:29God, I am not agreeing with the way you do things.
31:37and I'm not going to submit myself
31:43to your will. So Jonah decided I
31:49am not going. He went down to
31:55Tarshish. He boards a ship. He went
32:01down to Joppa, boarded a ship heading
32:07towards Tarshish. Now if I had a
32:12map you would recognize that he is
32:18going away. Nineveh because he's saying God you want
32:24me to go to Nineveh to bring peace and righteousness but you need
32:30to understand that I don't agree with Nineveh being experiencing your peace or
32:35your righteousness not even for a minute so what I'm going to do
32:41I'm going to remove peace five from Nineveh because when peace
32:47is removed from a place that place becomes ripe for judgment
32:52so somebody needs to understand that the reason the earth is
32:58not judged as yet is because the church is still in
33:04the world and as long as the church is in the
33:09world the church represents the peace of God So before
33:15God can judge the earth, he has to remove
33:21his peace out of the earth. So Jonah understood
33:26this and said, now that peace is far away
33:32from Nineveh, you have no other choice but to
33:38judge them. Isn't it amazing how we think we
33:44can force the hand of God on his way
33:49to Tarshish? Thinking, okay,
33:55God, I won, you lost. How long
34:00are you going to take to reign
34:05judgment on Nineveh? Because peace is long
34:11gone. But God says, my ways are
34:16not your ways. And my thoughts are
34:21not your thoughts. So he caused the
34:27great storm of wind to rise on
34:32the sea. And the mariners realized something was wrong
34:38based on the direction that the wind was coming from. These
34:44were experienced mariners. They had been in the sea before. And
34:49when they recognized that it was a northeast wind, they recognized
34:55that this is not a normal wind. This is a wind
35:01from a God and we are under judgment. Oh God,
35:06I took the liberty to do a study on the wind. And I realized that
35:12there are four winds that governs the earth. And they come from the four cardinal
35:18points. We have the north wind, the east wind, the west wind and the south
35:23wind. And based on the direction that the wind is coming from, it is carrying
35:29a message. When you think about the West Wind, it's
35:35mentioned only one time in Scripture. The Bible tells us that while
35:41the children of Israel were in Egypt and God wanted to get
35:47Pharaoh's attention is sent in the flies and the locusts and when Pharaoh got to
35:52a point and said alright if God gets rid of the flies and the locusts
35:58then I'll let his people go God sent the west wind and so the west
36:04wind blew away away the flies and the locusts and so the west
36:10wind is considered a wind of mercy and pity and can I
36:15tell you that is the wind that all of us love the
36:21truth be told had it not been that God chose to send
36:27the west wind our way in 2024 oh God we wouldn't be
36:33here for his mercies are new every morning The
36:39south wind is the wind of temptation. And we see that wind in
36:44the book of Acts called the Euroclindon. When Paul recognized the wind and
36:50he said, "Listen, it's not good for us to sail." And they said,
36:56"Well, Euroclindon blows and it tells us that all is well in the
37:02sea." Because they were deceived by the wind. The east wind is the
37:08wind that everybody hates. because the east wind brings in affliction
37:14and pain but the end result is always change when I teach about
37:20the east wind person said man I didn't even know there was so
37:25much occurrences in scripture of the east wind a lot of us just
37:31read scripture and jump over it we don't even realize that it was
37:37an east wind that caused that in Job's life when all hell broke
37:43loose. We don't even realize it was an east wind that dried up
37:49the Red Sea. We don't even realize that anytime God wants a change
37:55in Israel, the prophets would go to God in prayer and said, God
38:01send the east wind. It's a wind of affliction and pain but the
38:07end result is always change. but the north
38:12wind, oh God, is the wind of judgment. Those of us who are
38:18students of scripture would recognize that most of Israel's enemies comes from the
38:24north. Oh God, and so these experienced mariners realized that it was a
38:30northeast wind. And so they said, you know what? This wind is not
38:36just an average wind. We are under judgment. And the cause they discerned
38:42that the wind the tempestuous wind was being caused by a god
38:47every man on ship started calling to his god if there was
38:53a rastafarian he would have said oh god almighty and there were
38:58just many uh nationalities working on the ship and every man began
39:04calling to their god and when no god answered, they said,
39:10something is wrong because we are sure that it's
39:15a God causing this wind. So let us search
39:21the ship. It means that somebody else is on
39:26this ship. So they searched the ship and found
39:32Jonah in the hidden part of the ship fast
39:37asleep. They could not imagine. They woke him up
39:43and said, how could you be sleeping at a time like this? This
39:49is the worst wind that we have ever seen. I can imagine Jonah
39:55just, my name is Jonah and Jonah means peace. And so when you
40:01got peace, you sleep in any storm.
40:13So somebody don't understand how you can be at peace when the
40:19storms of life are raging. But Jonah got up and
40:24he said, what's the matter? And they said, look at the wind. God
40:30is angry. And Jonah said, you know what? I know what it's all
40:36about. It's me. Oh God. And they cast lots and it proved that
40:41it was indeed Jonah. Jonah said, my God is sending me on an
40:47assignment that I'm not comfortable with. And I'm trying to beat his
40:52system and so he's trying to get my attention but
40:58Jonah said you know what I'm still not going all
41:04Jonah had to do was repent God I'm sorry all
41:09right as soon as the ship reached I'm going to
41:15turn back and I'm going to Nineveh
41:21But Jonah was so determined that he said, show me
41:26overboard. I'd rather die than go to Nineveh. Because guess
41:32what? If I die and I represent peace, peace still
41:38not reach into Nineveh. And if peace don't reach to
41:44Nineveh, God has no other choice but to judge them.
41:56the Bible says that the Mariners became scared because they're saying my God
42:02this is a serious God this is not a God that you try
42:08for with look at these storms of wind oh God this is a
42:14mighty God and so they were afraid to throw God's servant overboard oh
42:20God and they said listen before we throw We need to go
42:25into covenant relationship with your God. And we are going to
42:31ask him, God, when we turn from our false God, when
42:37we turn from our wicked ways, will you turn? And God
42:42said, that's what the contract has always been. When you turn,
42:48I turn.
42:57So they started to worship
43:03Jonah's God. And when they
43:08realized the contract they turned
43:13from serving for God, but
43:18they still threw him overboard.
43:23And Jonah thought, "Nedive is
43:28going to get what they
43:33deserve because I can't swim."
43:42Only to realize that God had a great
43:47fish who would swallow him and bring him
43:52down to the lowest parts of the sea.
43:58And while in the fish's belly, Jonah began
44:03to contemplate. he said my god I need a second chance and God
44:09said Jonah you are so selfish you want a second chance for you
44:15but you don't want that entire city to get a second chance oh
44:20God we have to be careful about self-righteousness. God, I've been grown
44:26in the church, third generation apostolic and I remember hearing of
44:31young boys going into the church and stealing out the church
44:37equipment and the church decided we're going. God, on a 21
44:43day fast because God must kill these boys. God Almighty, but
44:48the more I started digging this book. I said they don't know the God
44:54that I serve because the God that I serve is not in the killing business.
44:59He is in the saving business. Oh God he said I have no pleasure in
45:05the death of sinners. I just want them to hear the contract. The contract is
45:10if you turn I turn.
45:21So Jonah cried out to God in the fish's belly. And God
45:27said, Jonah, you see, you never want any of it to get
45:32the contract. But now that same contract is yours if you will
45:38sign it. If you turn, I turn. And the Bible said out
45:44of the fish's belly, Jonah said, I signed the contract.
45:53So by tying the fish vomited him out on
45:58the shores of Nineveh. What should have been three
46:04days journey. Jonah took one day. I tell people
46:09Borgman might be faster over 100 and 200 meters but
46:15don't test Jonah over kilometers oh God Almighty Jonah
46:21ran with such fervency oh God Almighty that when
46:26he came to Nineveh with the message yet forty days and
46:32Nineveh shall be destroyed. Our God the king of Nineveh was
46:37so moved that he came off his throne. He ripped off
46:43his royal appearance and he sat down in sackcloth and ashes
46:49and he said let it be proclaimed throughout all Nineveh
46:55that we're going on a three-day fast not
47:01even the baby and the breast must suck
47:07breast milk oh God Almighty go for the
47:12animals out of the field and bring them
47:18into the concrete jungle not no food and
47:24no water and let us cry mightily unto
47:30God because we heard the contract
47:37It's when you turn. And the Bible
47:43said that they turned from their wicked
47:49ways. They threw themselves at the mercy
47:54of God. Oh God, sometimes I think about the mercies
48:00of God. And I said, oh, where would we have been had it not
48:06been for the mercies of God? When men, oh God, then I confess. There
48:12are times when I tell God, God, no, you can't bother with me. And
48:18God said, listen to me. My love has no limit.
48:26No wonder the psalmist said, for his mercies
48:32endure it forever. They turned from their wicked
48:37ways. They stopped doing what they used to
48:43do. And God had mercy on them. Going
48:49into a new year, a lot of people,
48:55if not everybody, want a change in their
49:00life. and you want god to
49:06turn things around in your favor but god said
49:12to tell you i'll never bless a mess i'll
49:17never bless unrighteousness you want a blessing this is
49:23the contract when you turn i turn oh god
49:29almighty the other word said if my people
49:35who are called by my name would humble themselves and pray and
49:41seek my face and turn from their wicked ways oh god almighty
49:47gregory just run come here quickly oh god this is the contract
49:53if you turn your back on god you turn your bits back
49:59on you oh God and if you step away from God you step away
50:05from you but if you turn around oh God and he'll turn around oh
50:10God and if you start marching towards him he'll march towards you the word
50:16of God said if you draw night to me oh God I'll draw night
50:22to you but you have to remember the contract
50:28When you turn, I'll turn.
50:34In closing, Nineveh turned from
50:39God and God turned His
50:45mercies towards them. And for
50:51a number of years, Nineveh
50:56did righteously before God. But
51:02after some generations, they turned
51:07back to their wicked ways.
51:16Forgetting the contract that is when
51:22you turn, I turn. And as
51:27soon as they turned back to
51:32their wicked ways, God turned back
51:37to His anger. And Nineveh was
51:42utterly destroyed. You can read it
51:48in the book of Nahum. Could
51:53we stand everywhere? God is a
51:58righteous God, full of grace and
52:03mercy. It is not His
52:09will for any to perish. And
52:14so tonight on the verge of
52:20a new year, while the earth
52:25is turning on its axis, God
52:30is saying, here is the deal.
52:35When you turn, I turn. God
52:41bless you tonight in Jesus name.
52:46What a word from God tonight.
52:51When you turn, I turn. How
52:57many could deal with a little more peace in your life?
53:03Peace in your heart. Peace with God. Righteousness. Relationship with God.
53:08Well, God has spoken to us tonight. When you turn, I
53:14turn. That's a contract. I love it. He is waiting with
53:20great mercy. Pray singers, come and get ready to help me.
53:25To sing, is your all on the altar of sacrifice laid?
53:32I want us to take the next, if you want to come to the altar
53:36for the next few moments, the altar is open. You want to come and talk
53:41to God for another few minutes. The altar is open. If you want to make
53:45a commitment to God tonight to turn your life around into his hand, we want
53:49to invite you tonight to come and talk to him. We won't badger you. We'll
53:54pray with you. We'll encourage you. But God is calling someone tonight to turn and
53:59please let's not run out just yet. We want to really stay back and just
54:04have a good time of worship together. We know people get excited on the outside
54:08when it gets to midnight and they start firing their arrows in the sky. You
54:13know those arrows I'm talking about? And so we want to make sure that we
54:18stay safe. So we're going to linger inside for a little bit and then we'll
54:24dismiss and have a little more fellowship in the lobby
54:29before we go. You have longed for sweet peace. Yes.
54:35I want you to think about the words of the
54:41song. to increase and have
