0:03Through it all, I have learned to trust
0:07in Jesus, I have learned to trust in
0:10God. Through it all, I have learned to
0:14depend upon his word. And there is a
0:17word that we can depend upon this
0:19morning. I want you to go with me in
0:21your Bibles to First Peter chapter 1. 1
0:24Peter chapter 1. And we want to share
0:27from verses 3 to9 of first Peter chapter
0:321. And then we will hear what God will
0:35say to us out of what God has already
0:38said to us. First Peter chapter 1:es
0:423-9.
0:44If we could just
0:46stand together one more time. I hate to
0:48bother us to stand again. Let's just
0:50stand one more time as we read through
0:52this text together. 1 Peter chapter 1:es
0:553 to9 and it reads like this from the
0:58New King James Version of God's holy
1:00word.
1:02Blessed be the God and father of our
1:05Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his
1:08abundant mercy has begotten us again to
1:12a live living hope through the
1:14resurrection of Jesus Christ from the
1:16dead to an inheritance incorruptible and
1:20undefiled and does not fade away
1:23reserved in heaven for you who are kept
1:28by the power of God through faith for
1:30salvation.
1:32ready to be revealed in the last time.
1:36In this you greatly rejoice, though now
1:39for a little while, if need be, you have
1:43been grieved by various trials, that the
1:46genuiness of your faith, being much more
1:50precious than gold that perishes, though
1:53it is tested by fire, may be found to
1:56praise, honor, and glory at the
1:58revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having
2:01not seen, you love. Though now you do
2:04not see him, you believe. Re you rejoice
2:07with joy inexpressable and full of
2:10glory, receiving the end of your faith,
2:13the salvation of your souls. The Lord
2:16bless you. You may be seated in God's
2:18house. I want to speak to us today as
2:22the Lord leads on this thought. Trial by
2:26fire.
2:27Trial
2:29by fire.
2:33From 1987 to 1991,
2:37scientists from the University of
2:39Arizona
2:41developed the Biosphere 2 project in
2:45Arizona.
2:47They housed 3,800 species of plants and
2:53animals in greenhouse domes to study
2:56their development in a utopian
3:00environment
3:01without realworld adversity. There was
3:05no pollution. There were no strong
3:07winds. There were no contrary storms.
3:12And at first all seemed to be going
3:15well. The trees experienced rapid
3:19growth, but they recognized that as soon
3:22as the trees got to a certain height,
3:24they began to bend over.
3:28When they investigated, they found that
3:30the bark of those trees was not able to
3:35withstand the pressure of their own
3:38growth.
3:40They did a comparison study between the
3:42trees in the biosphere and similar trees
3:45in the wild. And they discovered that
3:48the trees in the wild had a stronger
3:52bark because the storms that they had to
3:56encounter, the contrary winds against
3:59which they had to stand forced the trees
4:03to develop what is called stress wood in
4:07their cambium, which led to them having
4:10stronger barks and therefore a more
4:13resilient posture than those that were
4:16sheltered from the storms and the
4:19trials.
4:21I think God wants his saints to develop
4:24stress wood. I I think God wants his
4:28saints to have thickened cambiums and
4:31resilient barks that we can withstand
4:35anything that life throws our way as we
4:38are growing through this life.
4:43I am convinced that God is guided by
4:46this same principle that is demonstrated
4:49in nature in the way he relates with his
4:52church. That though he saves us, though
4:55he loves us, though he is keeping us,
4:58yet he has not given the church, he has
5:01not given the saints a buy from the
5:04world of trials and tribulations. We
5:07still have our trials. We still have our
5:10tribulations. We still get sick though
5:12we are God's chosen people, his royal
5:15priesthood, his holy nation. We still
5:18have troubles. We still have illnesses.
5:20We still have death in the family. God
5:24in fact uses these trials to strengthen
5:27the faith of the people of God. Trials
5:32are not external realities to our
5:35salvation. No trials are a part of the
5:39process of being saved. In fact, our
5:42salvation came out of the greatest trial
5:45where one man six trials he had to
5:49encounter endure that he was not guilty
5:52of and then they still crucified him,
5:55buried him in a grave, but on the third
5:58day morning he rose with power. We have
6:01a resilient savior and a resilient
6:04salvation because we will have trials in
6:09our lives.
6:11>> So Peter writing to the saints who like
6:14us today could not gather for worship in
6:17their sanctuary whatever that looked
6:19like in the first century. They could
6:21not gather for worship in where whether
6:24it was Solomon's porch in the temple
6:26where they typically gathered or some
6:29upper room that was given to them.
6:31Whatever their usual place of worship
6:33was, they were not able to gather there
6:36because trials, persecutions,
6:38tribulation had driven them from that
6:42space. But can I tell you that when God
6:44calls his people, he will always make
6:47space for us to worship. The earth is
6:49the Lord's. and the fullness thereof. He
6:53will raise up people, good people, great
6:56people, like a bishop Michael W. Smith,
6:59who will say to the people of God, "You
7:01may not be able to worship in your
7:03house. You may be removed from your
7:04house, but there is a house of God where
7:07you can come together for worship."
7:12So Peter writing to these saints who
7:14were scattered from Jerusalem
7:18worship wherever they could find space
7:20to worship in various parts of Asia and
7:24Europe. He reminded them that their
7:26sovereign God was always in control.
7:30That whatever was going on with them did
7:33not take their God by surprise. and that
7:35when Jesus had stood on the mountain and
7:38declared to them, "Upon this rock, I
7:41will build my church and the gates of
7:44hell will not prevail against it." He
7:47was not saying that absent the fact that
7:50in 2025 we would have a fire at our
7:53church. He knew what he was talking
7:55about. But we've got to believe that
7:57even in this God is sovereign.
8:01>> Peter reminded them of their sovereign
8:04God. He reminded them that the sovereign
8:07God, the same God whose sovereignty we
8:10trust for salvation, who who baptizes
8:14with his holy spirit at the new birth,
8:16who regenerates us with the Holy Ghost
8:18at the new birth. The same God who
8:21sprinkles us. And this idea of
8:22sprinkling, it means that God cleanses
8:24us from our sins by his blood when we
8:27are baptized in water calling upon the
8:30name of Jesus. The same God who is
8:33sovereign enough to save us has said to
8:36us that I have given you a secured
8:39salvation. I have called you unto
8:41something that nothing of time, nothing
8:45of time and earth can erode. Nothing of
8:48time and earth can take away from you.
8:50You may lose things permanently or
8:53temporarily on this earth, but nothing
8:56can take away the salvation that I have
8:59called you onto.
9:03It reminds them that they have this
9:05living hope.
9:07This the the idea here is that hope is
9:11continuing. It's a self sustaining
9:13spring that continues to spring up.
9:16Though trials and tribulations may be
9:19our reality, though sickness and death
9:21may seem to assail us, but there is a
9:23living hope. Does anybody have that
9:25living hope in this house, that
9:26prevailing hope, that resilient hope
9:29that just keeps on springing up?
9:32Hallelujah. I feel down. We may feel
9:34down sometime, but the hope just keeps
9:36on springing up. Is there anybody in
9:38this house that can testify that there
9:40is a living hope that is inside of my
9:43heart?
9:44God has given us this living hope. And
9:47in verse four, he says to us that we
9:50have this inheritance. And notice notice
9:52the the the terms that Peter uses to
9:54describe the inheritance that we have in
9:56God. The inheritance, the the blessings,
9:59this this is the real possession of the
10:02child of God. And I want us to notice
10:03here. This inheritance that Peter talks
10:05about is the real inheritance of the
10:08child of God. Sometimes we shout over
10:11cars and cribs and material places. But
10:16our real inheritance is something, hear
10:19this, that is incorruptible. Nothing on
10:21earth can ruin it. It is undefiled. It
10:24cannot be stained. It cannot be
10:26cheapened. It is unfading. It will never
10:28grow old. It will never wear out. Our
10:31true inheritance, our true calling, the
10:34true nature of the church cannot be
10:36destroyed by fire. cannot be washed out
10:39by a flood. Am I talking to anybody
10:41here? What we have is eternal.
10:45Eternal.
10:46>> Then verse five says, not only has God
10:48called us to this inheritance that is
10:51incorruptible undefiled unfading but
10:54God does something to us while he is
10:57preserving us for the inheritance. He's
10:59preserving us through the trials. We are
11:02kept by the power of God. This word kept
11:06furio means that God has a constant
11:09watch over his people. Can I testify
11:11here? God has a constant watch over his
11:14people. That while an office staff was
11:18busy at work on Thursday, that while
11:20teachers were with their prek kids in
11:23their classroom, while we were busy
11:25being busy about God's kingdom, and we
11:28didn't know what was going on, God had
11:30somebody driving past the church. Am I
11:33talking to anybody here? God had
11:35somebody driving past the church and in
11:38Jamaican parliament they hollered across
11:40the fence to one of our church brothers,
11:43"The church on fire.
11:47The church is on fire."
11:52That's God's constant care that even
11:55while Elder Rose who in the last few
11:58weeks has come on board as our very able
12:01uh maintenance personnel and he has been
12:03doing an excellent even while he is in
12:05Martineique preaching the gospel and he
12:07was not there to be around the place God
12:10was watching the church that he could
12:12have somebody else to alert us that
12:15something was going on. Can I tell you?
12:17We may have been out of a building, but
12:19thank God nobody was hurt. Nobody was
12:22touched by the fire because God is
12:25keeping his people by his power.
12:29Oh God,
12:31[Music]
12:33we are kept by the power of God. We may
12:37feel sad in this moment, but is there
12:39anybody in here that can rejoice that we
12:42are kept by the power of God through
12:44faith? God not only has an inheritance
12:47for us, but he's keeping us for what he
12:49has for us.
12:53The challenge for us, brothers and
12:54sisters, is how do we keep faith alive
12:59in God's plan and in God's protection
13:01while we are trudging through the
13:04complex trials of this life on the way
13:07to glory. First thing that we must pay
13:10attention to is number one, the grief
13:13response to trials. Does everybody say
13:14it? The grief
13:16>> responds to trials. Yes, there is a
13:21natural
13:23builtin
13:24grief response to trials. And Peter does
13:27not
13:29ignore this reality. He does not deny
13:32this. But in verse six, he says, even
13:34though you rejoice that you are saved by
13:37God, you rejoice in the blessings that
13:39the Lord has given to you. You rejoice
13:41in the security of an inheritance. You
13:44rejoice in these eternal things, but on
13:47earth for a while you may be grieved. In
13:50other words, in in in and he says, you
13:53have been grieved by various trials.
13:56Because you see, grief is our natural
14:00emotional and psychological and
14:02spiritual and physiological response to
14:06losses and hurts that happen to us along
14:09the way of life. Peter is saying to us,
14:12you don't have to deny what you are
14:14feeling when you're in a season of
14:16trials. You can admit that I feel down
14:20that I feel sad. We can admit that the
14:23last two years has brought us several
14:26trials and sometimes we feel emotional
14:30fatigue. We feel burned. Am I talking to
14:32anybody in this house? We feel the grief
14:36of the trials that we're going through.
14:38Never deny the grief response to our
14:41trials. Ha. Never deny it. Believers
14:46must understand that God when he saves
14:50us, he has not taken away our emotions.
14:53He hasn't taken them away. It is okay to
14:56lament over the ailments in our bodies.
14:58It is okay to lament that we're feeling
15:01a little sad. It is okay to grieve over
15:04the traumas that we are experiencing. It
15:05is okay to grieve over our children,
15:08over our marriages. It is okay to grieve
15:10when illnesses and death get in the
15:12family. It is okay to grieve when there
15:15are d downturns in our businesses and
15:17our finances. It is okay to grieve that
15:20today we are not in our own place of
15:23worship. It's okay to grieve. It's a
15:25natural response to our trials.
15:28But I hear Peter saying, don't miss
15:30this. He says, "For a little while."
15:35Somebody holl for a little while. Come
15:36on. Come on. Just tell that neighbor,
15:38I'm grieving, but it's just for a little
15:41while. I'm not going to let my head hang
15:43down for too long. And even while tears
15:46are flowing down my cheek and lapping
15:48under my chin, I am still going to lift
15:52my hands and give the Lord a praise.
15:57Hallelujah.
15:59It's a lot of us. It's It's not hard to
16:02have the because of praise.
16:05Because you bless me, I praise you.
16:07Because you do what I like, I praise
16:10you. But how about that? Nevertheless,
16:12praise that that though the fig tree
16:15will not blossom and no fruit is in the
16:17vine and we don't know when we're going
16:19to get back to the house of worship but
16:21nevertheless I still glorify the name of
16:24our God. We grieve but it's just for a
16:27little while.
16:29Oh God.
16:32Hallelujah. There is a grief response to
16:35our trial. But let me move on quickly
16:37here because he says don't stay there
16:38for too long because he want us not to
16:41miss the golden reality in our trials.
16:46The golden reality in our trials. God
16:49has a purpose within our trials. And he
16:52says this that the faith the precious
16:55faith that we have in the Lord that is
16:58given to us through the word Lady Grace
16:59that this precious faith of ours says it
17:02is like gold that God has given us
17:06something golden within our spirits. But
17:08but can I talk about gold for a second
17:10here? Because Peter also says to us that
17:13because we have this faith that is
17:15comparable to gold, we must understand
17:18that gold does not come to its full
17:22maturity, to its full purity. Gold does
17:24not come to realize its truest and its
17:27highest value until it has been tried.
17:33>> Oh, the devil also has a purpose in
17:36trials. He thinks that every trial is
17:38going to break us, going to cut us down,
17:41going to make us hang our heads. That's
17:43what that's what he thinks trials will
17:45accomplish. But what he doesn't know is
17:47that I have a golden faith that God has
17:50deposited within me. And trials do not
17:54destroy the golden faith. What trial
17:57does is that imp it improves the value
18:01and the genuiness of my golden faith.
18:05Hallelujah.
18:07>> Gold,
18:08gold has to when that crude gold is
18:11mined in the earth, it still has
18:13external impurities. It still has
18:16internal impurities, but that gold has
18:18to Dr. Dwayne, it has to be crushed at
18:20the mill to be detached from the
18:22worthless external materials. The gold
18:24has to be immersed in costic cyanide to
18:28uh to leech to to to leech the worthless
18:32material that have strongly attached
18:34themselves to it. The gold has to be
18:36exposed to extreme pressures in the
18:38oxidation chamber to begin the removal
18:41of internal impurities. The gold has to
18:44be washed in extremely hot water and
18:47acidic solutions to cleanse it. The gold
18:49has to be subject to electrical whining
18:52to extract the toxic mercury from it.
18:54The gold finally has to be placed in an
18:57oven of 12 thou 1200°
19:01Celsius for several days engaged by
19:04fire. And here's the deal. None of those
19:07things destroy the gold. It only makes
19:10the gold better. Can I tell you? Come
19:12here. Come here. Come here. Trials only
19:15come to make us strong. We can choose
19:18today that we will not let the trials
19:20destroy our faith, but rather we will
19:23allow trials to purify and to perfect
19:26and to strengthen our faith so that God
19:29can display us as the trophies of the
19:32grace and the glory of God.
19:36I'm choosing, hallelujah, to allow the
19:38genuiness of my faith to be seen in the
19:41middle of my trials. I'm still going to
19:43show up for every service. I'm still
19:45going to do what God has laid in our
19:47hearts to do. Am I talking to anybody
19:48here? I'm still going to serve even in
19:51the middle of the trials because my
19:53faith is genuine. Is there anybody in
19:56here that has some genuine faith? It is
19:59in the face of trials that we begin to
20:02see the genuiness of our faith.
20:07We talk of faith when we're up on the
20:09mountains. And the talk comes so easy
20:12when life's at its best. But it's down
20:15in the valleys of the trials and
20:18temptations. That's the place where your
20:21faith is really put to the test because
20:23then you begin to have to say to
20:25yourself that the God of the mountain is
20:28still God in the valley. When things go
20:30wrong, he will make them rise. The God
20:33of the good days is still God in the bad
20:35times. And the God of the daytime is
20:38still God in the Is there anybody in
20:40here that's serving all season, all
20:42time, all that God? Why don't you snap
20:46your fingers, give somebody high five,
20:48and tell them, "My God is all that. I
20:52can make it."
20:55Hallelujah.
20:57Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus. He
21:00lets the gold stay in the fire. And
21:03somebody says how comes doesn't he
21:07doesn't somebody who is not queued into
21:09the process might say how how comes he's
21:11letting the gold stay in the fire but
21:14Warren Wisby says that the in the old in
21:17the ancient near east with the gold
21:18smiths what they would do they would
21:20stand nearby you know they didn't have
21:22all the latest gadgets to to to measure
21:24when the purity is being extracted from
21:27the gold they didn't have all of that so
21:28he said that the goldsmith would he
21:31would every now and then he would just
21:32pull open the furnace and he would look
21:35at the gold to see if the impurities are
21:37leaving. And he would then put it back
21:39in and then he'd pull it out again. And
21:41one time he just pulls it out and a
21:43smile creeps over his face and he says,
21:45"The gold is ready." And somebody says
21:47to him, "How do you know the gold is
21:49ready?" Wearsby says that when the gold
21:52was ready, he would see his face. He
21:54would see his reflection shining. Come
21:56here. Come here. Come here. Come here.
21:58Oh my God in heaven. I want to say to
22:01you that God is looking at you while
22:03you're going through your trials,
22:05through your illnesses, through the
22:06grief for death and illnesses in your
22:09body and now our church situation and he
22:11is saying, "Can I see myself in you? Can
22:14I see my face radiating in my people?"
22:18That's when you know that your faith is
22:21genuine. When the face of Jesus can be
22:24seen in you in the middle of your
22:26troubles and your trials,
22:28keep on showing Jesus.
22:31Pentype, keep on showing Jesus. Keep on
22:34showing him through your love and your
22:35worship. Keep on showing him through
22:37your testimonies. Come on. Show him
22:39through your ministries because we don't
22:42have lackey, limp wristed faith. We've
22:45got strong resilient faith in our God.
22:51Ah God, thank you. Thank you.
22:54>> Hallelujah. There's a grief response to
22:57our trials.
22:58There is the golden reality in our
23:00trials. God is bringing out something
23:04golden out of us. This trial is going to
23:08make us more strong, more resilient. Do
23:11I have a witness in the house? I don't
23:13know yet what God is getting ready to
23:15do. But can I tell you, I feel this
23:17peace of God over me. I believe that God
23:21is up to something. He's getting ready
23:23to blow our minds.
23:30The grief response to trials, the golden
23:34reality in our trials. But I'll close
23:36when I tell you about the glorious
23:39results
23:40of our trials.
23:42Peter said in the last part of verse 7,
23:44he says, "The genuiness of your faith
23:47may be found to praise, to honor, glory
23:52at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom
23:54having not seen you love, though now you
23:58do not see him, you yet believing, you
24:00rejoice with joy inexpressable and full
24:03of glory, receiving the end of your
24:05faith, the salvation of your soul." What
24:09he's saying is if you can hold on to
24:11faith amidst the fiery trials, glory is
24:15coming afterwards. In in the cliche of
24:17the day, there shall be glory after
24:20this.
24:21Can you just nudge your neighbor and
24:23tell them there shall be glory after
24:25this? Come on. There there there shall
24:28be glory after this. The glory will be
24:32fully revealed when he brings us through
24:34the fiery trials. The glory of God will
24:38be revealed when we see what God has
24:40awaiting us on the other side of trials
24:43and tribulations. So I say to the saints
24:45of the Lord, press along, saints, press
24:47along.
24:49Oh, glory to God. I feel the Holy Ghost
24:52in here. Press along, saints. Press
24:54along in God's own way. Persecutions you
24:57must bear. Trials and crosses you must
24:59bear. But hear me. The hotter the
25:01battle. I feel the Holy Ghost in here.
25:04The sweeter will be the victory for
25:06there shall be glory after this.
25:13Hey God. Hey God. Can I channel the
25:16prophet Hegi? The glory of the latter
25:19house shall be greater than the glory of
25:23the former house. Is there anybody here
25:26that believe God right now? I I don't
25:28know what God is doing, but what I feel
25:30in my spirit is that the glory of the
25:33latter house shall be greater than the
25:36glory of the former house. And I'm not
25:38just talking about the house of worship,
25:40but I'm talking about whatever it is
25:42that God is up to and the ultimate glory
25:45for which he's preparing us. There is a
25:47glorious church, but there is a glorious
25:50eternal kingdom that is coming on the
25:52other side. And when we see Jesus, there
25:56will be glory after this. Somebody shout
25:58glory in this house.
26:02Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Let
26:05me remind us as I close. Let me remind
26:08us as I close here. Romans 8 and18. For
26:11I consider Oh, glory to God. I feel his
26:15presence all over this place. I I'm
26:17trying to contain myself, but but I feel
26:19God's presence in here. The I I I say to
26:23us, I consider that the sufferings of
26:26this present time, they are not worthy
26:29to be compared with the glory that shall
26:32be revealed in us. The trials and the
26:35tribulations they are working for us. A
26:38more exceeding and eternal weight of
26:41glory. We will see some on this side.
26:44But the greater glory awaits when I see
26:46Jesus. When all my troubles and my
26:48trials are gone. When I see Jesus, when
26:52my faith shall be sight. When I see
26:54Jesus and I don't need a house of
26:56worship anymore. When I see Jesus and
26:59there is no illness in the body anymore.
27:01When I see Jesus and fire cannot touch
27:04the eternal kingdom. When I see Jesus in
27:08that kingdom where death shall never
27:11stain the street of the city, nor reach
27:13of death on that mansion door. When I
27:16see Jesus in that space when tears will
27:20never flow anymore. When I see Jesus in
27:24the place where we'll never part
27:26anymore, that's a day when I will really
27:28see the glory of God. When I see him
27:31face to face, I feel the Holy Ghost in
27:33here. That's the day when the glory of
27:36God will fully be manifested.
27:41Hallelujah. When the glory hakash
27:45of God is fully revealed, then we will
27:48stand together and we will sing to God
27:50be the glory for great things he has
27:53done. Is there anybody in here that can
27:56raise your hands now in anticipation?
27:57Say to God be the glory
28:01great things he has done. Let me close
28:04these last three things. You may be
28:06seated here. These last three things
28:09Peter says to us and I want to leave
28:10this with us as I close right now and we
28:12open the altar for prayer. He says this
28:14is how you ought to walk through your
28:16trials. Now that you know the grief
28:18response that is in your trials, the
28:21golden reality that is in your trial,
28:23but the glorious results of the trials.
28:25This is what we do in verse eight. He
28:27says we ought to love Christ. Somebody
28:29say love him. Love him. Love him. Don't
28:32let anything. It's about Jesus Christ.
28:36It's about It was never about a building
28:38in the first place. Thank God he brought
28:41us from a hotel room. Thank God he
28:43brought us from a high school and he
28:44gave us our own space. And what God is
28:47trying to say to us is what I want you
28:49to get is that I was with you from 1996.
28:53I was with you before 1841 Northwest 7th
28:56Avenue became a reality. Love Christ.

29:02Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Love him.
29:07Love him. Love him. What shall separate
29:10us from the love of God?
29:13Shall tribulation? Shall distress?
29:16Nothing shall separate us from the love
29:19of God.
29:21Secondly, trust Christ. He says we
29:24believe in him. We don't see him yet. We
29:26don't see what he's doing yet, but we
29:28trust him. We believe in him. We love
29:30him. We trust him. And verse eight,
29:32lastly, we rejoice
