0:00and of course some wonderful church. My
0:00subject today as I bring the word of the
0:00Lord to you
0:02is first the tears.
0:06This is not going to be an easy message.
0:10It is not going to be the me best
0:13message I have ever preached.
0:16It's not going to be a message that is
0:19easy to receive.
0:21I warn you ahead of time. I'm not
0:24bringing you cotton candy today.
0:27I'm not bringing you Jolly Rancher.
0:30I am bringing to you a heavier word,
0:36but we need to understand it.
0:39And I want to speak on what I believe is
0:43the greatest tragedy of the church.
0:46Jesus told us in the parable that some
0:49people come to church and they sit on
0:51the pews. They attend faithfully
0:55and yet they have excused themselves
0:57from the pressure of reaching the lost.
1:01He tells us in the parable that we read
1:04through our text, Jesus was speaking and
1:06he said, "The kingdom of heaven shall be
1:08likened unto a man who planted a field
1:13for wheat. And in that wheat, the
1:16planting somewhere during the night, an
1:19enemy came, the Bible says, and sowed
1:23among the wheat tears."
1:26And this story tells us it was the same
1:29field. They grew in the same soil. They
1:32drank of the same sunlight. They had the
1:35same rainfall. They received the same
1:38care of the same singing shepherd. And
1:42the gardener would come through and
1:45offer them his love and attention. And
1:48yet there would be tears among the
1:51wheat. So the question I'm bringing is
1:54what is a tear? Because many people
1:56would like to interpret this according
1:59to the convenience of their own
2:01interpretation.
2:02And I don't want it convenient for me as
2:05much as I would like to make it
2:07convenient for you. I refuse to preach
2:09conveniently. If I'm a man of God, I've
2:12got to be responsible in bringing the
2:15word and breaking it forth. What is a
2:18tear? Obviously it is a person who looks
2:21like a disciple, talks like a disciple,
2:24acts like a disciple, lives like a
2:27disciple, gives like a disciple where
2:30everybody would think this person fits
2:33here, belongs here, ought to be here,
2:36should be here,
2:39sounds like they ought to be here, but
2:42there's no fruit. Fruit can be
2:44interpreted for many things, but the
2:46only true fruit scripturally is fruit
2:50that changes the lives of others. It's
2:54not fruit for my own convenience, fruit
2:56for my own advancement. The kingdom of
2:59heaven is built on two premises. Number
3:01one, I must be saved. Number two, once
3:04I'm saved, I'm to get over myself and
3:06realize I'm here to make an impact on
3:09families and individuals and people who
3:11are in the vortex of the violent, in the
3:14place of hate, in the place of hurt.
3:17They have encountered preachers that are
3:19sour. They have encountered churches
3:21that are weward. They en encountered
3:24people who don't want anything to do
3:26with God. And we are to be the light to
3:29those people.
3:32And that person who doesn't bear fruit
3:34carries no burden.
3:37Lord help me beyond himself.
3:41They may even be the best church member
3:43according to everybody else's estimate.
3:45They may be part of all the programs,
3:47show up at all the administrative
3:49activities. They may even work in the
3:52office. They may be the pastor of the
3:54church. They may be the one that brings
3:56the message. One of the things that's
3:59drilled into me when I went to seminary,
4:01brother Ian, who was our dean of
4:03theology, a wonderful, wonderful man of
4:05God, he put some things into us
4:07preachers that we put in. But anyone
4:09who's ever worked for me here at the
4:10church knows this is a part of my
4:12interview. I always say, please never
4:15confuse what you do as a job
4:23with your concern for souls.
4:27Don't ever confuse. Don't ever think
4:30that because you're coming here every
4:31day of the week or working or getting
4:33involved.
4:35Don't write that off as see I love the
4:37Lord.
4:39Because you can be very involved in the
4:41programming of a church. I'm not saying
4:44we're doing bad things. We're doing good
4:46things. I hope we're doing wonderful
4:47things. But we can all get to a place we
4:51can excuse ourselves from the hurting,
4:55the disenfranchised,
4:57the lost, the broken, the weward. We can
5:01excuse oursel from reaching out to the
5:03backslider because we're angry that they
5:05abandoned. We can excuse oursel from
5:08loving the hurting that we don't
5:10understand because we still don't
5:12understand them. We can excuse ourselves
5:14from not reaching to the culture that is
5:16not a part of our culture because that's
5:18a different culture than mine and I'm
5:20happy to be me. And all of these
5:23pressures can excuse the process of even
5:27being a great church member. I played
5:30the drums for church growing up. I'll
5:32never forget all the times I played and
5:34my dad would take me off the drums every
5:36once in a while, not sit me down, but he
5:38would say, "David, don't confuse your
5:40drumming for reaching the lost. I know
5:43you come early for practice and I know
5:45they use you in the state and the Lord
5:46had blessed me and I played quite a bit
5:48of conferences. It was heady stuff. It
5:51was cool, man.
5:53He always told me, "I got in a trio that
5:55back then was the something trio, the
5:57Lanny Wolf Trio, and we traveled around
5:59America in a Greyhound bus." And I kid
6:02you not, I used to give my autograph.
6:07Please forgive me.
6:10It was funny. They had a picture of the
6:12band and and people would walk up and
6:14give our signatures and I would just say
6:15that's good Dartberg material.
6:18But my dad always told me, "Son, don't
6:20ever confuse your work in the band and
6:22the work in the trio with loving the
6:24lost. Come down out of those drums and
6:27get in that altar and pray with people.
6:30>> Come off of that microphone and get down
6:32and pray with hurting people. Don't
6:34confuse your attendance and your place
6:37and your activity of the workplace as
6:40really caring.
6:43>> Now I bring you this message because
6:46when Jesus told the story of the
6:48parables he said no one would be able to
6:52tell the difference. The Lord said that
6:54while men slept, an enemy came in and
6:59sowed tears in the same field as the
7:03wheat. They grew in the same place while
7:06men slept. They looked so much alike
7:09that nobody could tell them apart. And
7:12then the gardener came and he said, "Oh,
7:14but I've got the ability to tell them
7:16apart." And all of us have a little
7:19gardener in us. We all think we can tell
7:23those who are wheat and those who are
7:25tears. And that gardener felt like he
7:28could tell the difference. But you know
7:30what the Lord said? You don't have the
7:33skill set. You don't have the ability.
7:37You are not to do it. Only specially
7:41equipped angels will come at the end.
7:44And what will happen? At the harvest
7:47time, there will be a gathering of the
7:50angels and the angels will come and
7:54first
7:58take the tears.
8:01Why must I preach like this?
8:04Why put a heavyness on you like this?
8:09Because this is not a message you can
8:10look around to anyone else.
8:12In fact, while at the end of this
8:14message, I'm still going to open this
8:15altar for prayer, I'm really going to
8:17ask everybody to kneel
8:20because this is a self- inspection
8:24message. This is a saying, where have I
8:27excused myself? How have I let myself
8:30out of caring for those who need to be
8:33reached?
8:35We walked prayer this pri Friday all
8:37over this property and what an what an
8:39evening it was. So many wonderful people
8:42came and walked all of these 10 acres
8:44and it was awesome. I walked even off
8:46the trail that the prayer team, Sister
8:48Vyus and her team had so beautifully
8:51mapped out and we walked around and it
8:54was just fantastic walking and praying
8:56and and lightning came close by. At
8:58least the the not close by the siren
9:01said lightning is coming and lightning
9:02never came. We were the lightning.
9:07But this month, Saturday, we had a child
9:10raising seminar, a parenting seminar,
9:12and it was so wonderful. What a
9:14sweetness of the Lord was here in this
9:16place from 9 in the morning until we did
9:19go long 1:15, 1:30. It was a wonderful
9:23time. And those of you that were a part
9:25of it, you know what I'm talking about.
9:27We have a cap campus ministry seminar
9:29where we will go and not let the uh
9:32costic
9:33hum uh uh hottiness of the university
9:37stop us from reaching through that
9:41static to the kids at universities. We
9:45will have a a soul-winning seminar on
9:48August the 22nd. And we've got a guest
9:51speaker who he and his wife have been
9:53involved in writing grants for
9:55nonprofits and they have been involved
9:58in teaching us how to write grants
10:00because we want to reach the lost. Eli
10:02Liy has given millions of dollars to
10:05these religious nonprofits. They just
10:08got 1.7 million for an apostolic
10:11campground recently and they're helping
10:13us and by the grace of God we're going
10:14to get grants. but they're involved in
10:17trying to penetrate the darkness from a
10:20business strategy and this whole month
10:22will be given to that. But I want to
10:24tell you that when in this hour here is
10:29the close of a service here in a church
10:34like this, two people will sit on the
10:37same aisle. They'll come to the same
10:39altar. One will see the lost. The other
10:44one will look like they see the lost.
10:47They will one will account to bear
10:50fruit. The other one has the actions as
10:53if they're trying to bear fruit. One is
10:57genuinely touched. The other one is
11:00genuine genuinely touched. Both are
11:04touched. Both weep. Both pray. Both
11:09give. Both worship. Both are on the
11:13praise team. Both preach in the same
11:16pullpit. Both work as greeters at the
11:20front. Both are at the health desk. Both
11:24teach Sunday school lessons. Both have
11:27the activities
11:29of church work in their life.
11:34But one in their soul
11:37trembles
11:40that there's fruit
11:43and the other just checks the box of
11:47activity.
11:49One is wheat,
11:52the other one just looks like wheat. How
11:55does it happen? Oh, there's many ways it
11:57happens. Perhaps you came to a set
11:59special service and the preacher
12:01preached a message and it was a moment
12:03of time in your life and you were moved
12:05emotionally and you said, "I've got to
12:06be part of this thing." And you came and
12:09you love God. You love God right now.
12:11You got what you got. But then somewhere
12:14you figured it was just enough. You were
12:16going to lighten yourself and give
12:19yourself permission to just turn into a
12:23box checker.
12:27I'm telling you, as pastor, I thank God
12:29for box checkers.
12:33I'm not here against the box checker.
12:37But somewhere between the outward and
12:40that inward part of you that connects
12:42with the eternity, there's a difference
12:45between a wheat and a tear. And nobody
12:50sitting beside you knows what you are.
12:55You don't know what I am. I know we all
12:58are good at presenting ourselves. And I
13:01will honestly say there are some people
13:03that just come to church on Sunday and
13:05you're not even trying to check a box.
13:06You think you check the box just by
13:08walking through the doors of this
13:10church.
13:11You haven't received the Holy Ghost. You
13:13haven't been baptized in Jesus' name.
13:16You're not trying to change the way you
13:18walk. You just enjoy this church. This
13:21message really isn't to you. I'm glad
13:23you're here. I want you to see in a
13:26change in your life, a transformation in
13:29how you pray. I want you to see take the
13:32the steps towards being born again.
13:35>> But that is not what this message is to.
13:39We know you're not in the church. We're
13:42glad you come, but your life tells us
13:45you're not a part of the church. You
13:47just want to be close to the church. We
13:50love you here. You're welcome here. We
13:53want you close to the church. We're not
13:55here to try to make you feel like you're
13:58not us,
14:00but you're not us.
14:06Because there is a consecration.
14:09There is a burden. The Bible calls it a
14:11yoke.
14:14You don't just live just to go and smile
14:18at the Lord so he'll be kind to you.
14:21You're not just trying to get a
14:22promotion out of God or a wife out of
14:25God. You're not just trying to get your
14:28children okay out of God. You're not
14:30just trying to meet somebody to add to
14:32your LinkedIn profile. See, the church
14:35has got to be more than a social club.
14:38The church has got to be more than a
14:40glorified softball team. The church has
14:43got to be more than just a place with
14:45good music and some emotional highs. The
14:48church has got to understand there's
14:50only one reason we're here. Number one,
14:52it's to save me. I want to be saved. I
14:55must be saved. But somewhere I've got to
14:58stop just saying it's about me. And I've
15:00got to embrace an understanding that I
15:03can look like a wheat. I can act like a
15:05wheat. I can pray like a wheat. I can
15:07worship like a wheat. I can give like a
15:09wheat. But I have given my inner soul
15:12permission to shuck
15:16the true trembling of the soul that goes
15:20with you to work and goes with you on
15:22the job. And you're there and you're
15:24just doing a job and you have a client.
15:26You're representing your company, but
15:28something clicks between you and that
15:30client. You realize now this isn't just
15:33work.
15:35>> That's a soul. And I'm a soul seeker.
15:39And I'm not just here to help them get
15:41their air conditioner fixed.
15:45I refuse to be that kind of person. I
15:48want to hear what G if Jesus hadn't said
15:50this, I wouldn't be preaching this. I'm
15:52not here to put guilt on anyone. I'm not
15:55here to make you feel heavy. I don't
15:57like doing that. There is now therefore
15:59no condemnation. Romans 8. to them who
16:02are in Christ Jesus, who walk not. Key
16:04word,
16:06walk not after the flesh. See, you can
16:09look like the wheat, you can sing like a
16:11wheat, you can pray like a wheat, you
16:12can preach like a wheat, you can worship
16:14like a wheat, you can parent like a
16:16wheat, but somewhere, this is why I'm
16:18telling you, we all need to hit our
16:19knees at the conclusion of this message.
16:21All of us. All of us. This is not a
16:23message to look at somebody else. This
16:26is a message that I'm asking you in the
16:28Holy Ghost.
16:31Look deep in you because we all have
16:33some selfishness in us.
16:37We all want to look like wheat. Satan's
16:40greatest work is not the drunkard in the
16:42gutter. Satan's greatest work is not the
16:44prostitute down in Broward. Satan's not
16:48greatest work is not the backslider
16:50who's obviously walking away from God.
16:52Satan's greatest work is in the church
16:57inside the true church. All churches are
17:01not true. All churches are not accurate.
17:04All churches are not on track. I I love
17:07them all. I'm not here to judge them
17:09all. But ladies and gentlemen, if you've
17:10been around churches, you know they're
17:12show they show up differently.
17:15And I want this church to reach out to
17:17those who are still in spiritual
17:19kindergarten. I do. I want them to feel
17:22like this is a progressive place where
17:24you can grow and increase. But I also
17:28cannot neglect the part when a boy needs
17:30to become a man.
17:36>> When a church
17:38decides to no longer twiddle their
17:41thumbs, but they get I'm using the
17:44biblical terminology, okay? They get
17:46yolked up.
17:49They understand there's a task, there's
17:52a cause, and I can't always assume.
17:58And I've got the cause whipped.
18:03See, this is the problem that I've got
18:04to pray. I've pastored here long enough
18:08that I've got a few documents on my wall
18:10that tell me I've been somewhere and
18:12done something. I've won some awards.
18:15I'm on some committees. all that stuff.
18:18I like Paul said, I speak as a fool.
18:20Okay, that stuff it. I'm not dis
18:22disrespecting
18:24these things. But you can all get to the
18:27place where you think been there, done
18:29that, bought that t-shirt, graduated,
18:33done.
18:34There might be a pension plan that you
18:36can coast on on this earth, but there is
18:39no pension p plan for the lost. There is
18:42no pension plan to say, "All right, I've
18:44already checked that box. I prayed in
18:46enough altars with enough hurting
18:48people. I don't need to do it anymore. I
18:51don't have to be worried about my
18:52neighbor anymore. I've took them I've
18:54taken them cookies back in 01. I took
18:57them a basket of blessing in in 2019 and
19:01I've let them know I'm here.
19:06I am I am shaken in this in this place
19:11today. You know, I'm kind of a nerd. My
19:14wife tells me not to say that anymore
19:16because I don't mean that disrespectful.
19:18Okay. But I am a science geek. Is the
19:22geek a good word, baby? I I cannot help
19:25myself.
19:27I I I can't help Thank you. I'm
19:30intelligent. All right. I love that. All
19:31right. You got it.
19:34I love I love the study of things. I
19:36love the discovery of things. I love the
19:38advancement of things. I want a better
19:40world. And so I I've been that guy that
19:43reads all the popular mechanics back in
19:45the day. Then I graduated Wired magazine
19:48and read all of that. Had that delivered
19:49my house. Anyway, so I like science. I
19:52like all the advances that are coming
19:53and are yet here. One of the great
19:55writers uh is named James Glick. James
19:58Glick um uh is one of the greatest they
20:01say greatest science writers of all
20:03time. He wrote a book entitled Chaos. It
20:05was a talk about how invention and
20:08coming to together with things it's
20:10always brought out of chaos. He wrote a
20:12book on genius. He wrote a book on
20:14faster talking about time travel. He
20:18wrote uh also a book about to come out
20:20in November called the telephone, a new
20:23history. And so I'm very intrigued with
20:26these things. Just those titles just
20:28light my brain up. Okay. The telephone,
20:31a new history. I like that. A new
20:32history. That's Mr. Glick. That's pretty
20:35good.
20:39But he's he wrote a book. It was a
20:41biography.
20:43Musicians come.
20:45He wrote a biography. It was a biography
20:48about a Nobel Prize winning physicist
20:50named Richard Feainman.
20:54And Mr. Feainman was a physicist who had
20:57worked on the Manhattan project. This
21:00man died in 1988,
21:03but he was one of the most renowned
21:04physicists during that time. And he had
21:07married his high school sweetheart by
21:10the name of Arlene.
21:12When he was working on the Manhattan
21:14project, he had to be out there in New
21:15Mexico where they were working on this.
21:18He brought his wife's there, his
21:20sweetheart. While she was there, while
21:22he was working, she was diagnosed with
21:23terminal tuberculosis.
21:26And uh in the busyiness of the press
21:30trying to get the Manhattan project
21:32moving forward, James Glick tells us
21:36that this physicist Richard Feainman
21:41was so busy that he neglected to be
21:45there with his wife as she was in the
21:48process
21:50of dying. She was there when he died,
21:52but he regretted
21:58that he let the busyiness of
22:02even though it was an important thing
22:05he let that busyness still him.
22:09So Mr. Glick was writing this book and
22:11his the physicist's present wife had
22:14sent him a box of all of his letters to
22:16break down and read and he got through
22:20them and was reading them but he come
22:21across one envelope that was unopened.
22:25So he opened that envelope
22:29and he read a letter that had been
22:31unopened
22:33and it said,
22:36"It is such a terrible,
22:38terribly long time since I last wrote
22:40you.
22:43Almost two years since I wrote you.
22:48But I know you'll excuse me because you
22:51understand how I am.
22:56stubborn,
22:58realistic,
23:02and I thought there was no sense to
23:06writing.
23:08But now I know, my darling wife,
23:13that it is right to do what I have
23:16delayed in doing.
23:20I want to tell you
23:22I love you.
23:25I want to love you.
23:29I always
23:31will love you.
23:35I love my wife.
23:37My wife is dead.
23:40Rich.

23:45Please excuse me not mailing this,
23:49but I don't know your new address.
23:54The Lord said
23:57there's coming a day
24:00at the harvest
24:03when the kingdom of heaven,
24:06that's us. That's what I want to be. At
24:09least I know you do too or you wouldn't
24:10be here.
24:12The kingdom of heaven
24:15will be likened into a field of wheat.
24:19The witch
24:21at the harvest.
24:24There will be tears amongst the wheat.
24:30The gardener said, "Let me go take the
24:32tears out. I think I know them."
24:35Jesus said the only way you could tear
24:37tell the difference between the tears
24:39and the wheat was at the time of fruit.
24:46One never bore fruit.
24:49The tear looks exactly like a wheat.
24:53The time of the fruit, the fruit causes
24:57wheat to bend over from the heaviness of
25:00the fruit.
25:06Yes, I'm wanting you to feel a little
25:07heaviness today.
25:10Yes, I am.
25:12I'm not excusing
25:14anybody in this house, including me,
25:16today,
25:18I'm telling you, Jesus said at the end,
25:23the angels are going to come.
25:26He said, "First,
25:29they're going to take out the tears,
25:32and they're going to put the tears in
25:34the fire.
25:41They're going to put the tears
25:43in the fire.
25:48I'm going to let you imagine what that
25:50might be.
25:53I'll tell you this.
25:55I don't want to go to hell.
25:57I don't want to be so much Godword that
26:00I think it's all about me and I never
26:03graduate to the place where I'm not just
26:06trying to go to church getting my
26:08blessing and my open door and my
26:10promotion
26:11>> and my kids saved and my marriage
26:15rescued.
26:16But never
26:18feel that burden
26:21to go outside the selfishness
26:25that David Timothy Elms can have.
26:31I don't want to write that letter
26:33because first the angels go to the tears
26:43and he said the wheat
26:46gather into my barn.
26:54I know we all want to go to heaven.
26:57And there are a lot of pastors and
26:59preachers in this day.
27:02God bless them. But they make going to
27:05heaven seem just a piece of cake.
27:08They make going to heaven the destiny of
27:11the selfish and the cute.
27:15And I don't want to make heaven one
27:19cintillaa
27:21harder.
27:23I can't tell you how much I don't want
27:25to make it harder.
27:27I don't want to make it one ounce harder
27:31to get to than what it really is.
27:36But Jesus told his disciples this story.
27:40And woe be me
27:43if I don't
27:45tell you. Shall we stand? Well, we don't
27:47need to stand. We need to kneel. If you
27:49want to come and kneel around this
27:50altar,
27:52you're welcome to come and kneel. If you
27:54want to kneel at your seat,
27:57you're welcome to kneel.
27:59I told you it wasn't going to be the
28:00greatest message you ever heard. Told
28:03you it wasn't going to be the easiest
28:04message I've ever preached. But I'm
28:07asking you, will you look inside your
28:09soul right now? Will you be responsible
28:12for your thoughts and your prayers and
28:14your preparations?
28:16Will you be responsible?
28:19Will you be responsible?
28:21Oh Jesus, we are your people. We are
28:25here, oh God, to come before your throne
28:29and answer to ourselves.
28:32No one else can we answer to. You told
28:36us not a preacher. You told us not a
28:40neighbor, not a husband, not a wife. You
28:43told us not our children. You told us no
28:47one was qualified. Our parents are not
28:50qualified to judge us. Our pastor is not
28:53qualified to judge us. The leadership is
28:56not qualified to judge us. I must judge
29:00myself.
29:02Lift your voice. Pentecostals.
29:05Lift your voice. Pentecostals.
29:08I know we got some people in this church
29:09that are shy in their prayers. That's
29:11okay. We've also got some people who
29:13know how to pray. I want this place to
29:16sound like the prayer of somebody who
29:18wants to get it right. I want the sound
29:20of the prayers of people who are
29:22desperate to be righteous, desperate to
29:25be clean, desperate to be pure,
29:28desperate to be holy. Oh Lord, I want to
29:31get it right. Oh Lord, I want to be
29:34clean. Oh Lord, I want to be righteous.
29:37Lord, am I a wheat or am I a tear? Oh
29:42God, I don't want a false confidence. Oh
29:45God, I do not want to have a hottiness
29:47about who I think I am. Oh God, I do not
29:50want to walk in your house and worship
29:52like a wheat and preach like a wheat and
29:54pray like a wheat and sing like a wheat
29:57and work like a wheat and act like a
