Summary
Pastor David T. Elms explores Psalm 42, reframing 'deep calling unto deep' as a desperate cry in the midst of a life-storm, and encourages believers to move toward God in faith even when overwhelmed by chaos.
Key points
- •The phrase 'deep calleth unto the deep' in Psalm 42 is not just a spiritual platitude but a description of a man caught in an overwhelming storm where chaos above meets chaos below.
- •When we face 'black water' and 'bruised skies' in our lives-whether through family rebellion, betrayal, or societal shifts-God remains the anchor that is deeper than the storm.
- •Biblical breakthroughs often require us to move first before God moves (e.g., humbling ourselves, praying, or going to a specific 'there').
- •We must learn to interrogate our own souls like David did, asking 'Why art thou cast down?' and choosing to hope in God even when emotions suggest otherwise.

When you feel overwhelmed by chaos this week, stop and talk to your soul: identify the specific 'storms' bothering you, then audibly declare, 'I shall yet praise Him,' and take one proactive step of faith toward God.
Reflection questions
- What 'black water' or 'bruised skies' are you currently facing in your personal life or career?
- David mentioned being 'harassed by enemies' and 'eating tears.' How can you be more honest with God about your pain during prayer?
- Is there a 'there' (a specific place of obedience or habit) that God is calling you to move toward before He provides the next breakthrough?
- How does knowing that 'deep calleth unto the deep' refers to a storm change your perspective on Psalm 42?

0:00Amen.
0:00I have uh been warned by my mentor
0:04when I first began to preach and pastor.
0:08He said, "David, don't fight this summer
0:11because summer is when people travel."
0:14And you can see how we're uh really
0:17crowded right now. But when people start
0:19coming back, I can't tell you how many
0:21are not here today because of the
0:23blessed summer. And I love it. I
0:25celebrate the fact that you're able to
0:27travel. Uh, it's not anything that I
0:29feel badly about. In fact, I'm not the
0:31kind of pastor that says you have to be
0:33home on Sunday to be in church. I have
0:36known those kind and I'm not saying that
0:37they're wrong. It's good to get back for
0:39Sunday. But there's also something
0:42beautiful about taking a rest and taking
0:45a moment and being gone. I told my wife
0:47that we're going to take our vacation
0:49this year. Uh, and we're going to do it
0:51in October because I want to go when
0:55it's cool and the leaves are changing.
0:57So, I will be taking our vacation in
0:59October, thank God. Uh, I'm looking
1:01forward to that. But until then, I'm
1:04just going to keep marching through that
1:06point. But the hardest time to pastor is
1:09June, July, and August. And uh,
1:14June is easier than July,
1:17and July is easier than August because
1:20everyone is tired.
1:23It seems like they're not tired, but
1:25they've taken a vacation. And vacations
1:28wear you out.
1:31I know you're being real silent on me
1:33right now, but it's amazing how
1:35structure is fulfilling when you have
1:37order in your day. And of course, those
1:40with kids,
1:42uh-huh, I hear you. You're ready for
1:45school to start back. And the teachers
1:46that I'm honored to pastor, they're
1:49already ready. They're working and
1:52struggling and straining to get their
1:54classrooms ready. And here we are in the
1:56middle of it all and everybody's tired.
2:00But guess what? God's still great.
2:03>> I had as a part of my parenting a family
2:07day. Uh, and it was very important to me
2:09to have a family day where I took
2:11whatever I had, whether they were in the
2:13school or not, and took a season for
2:16them on that one day a week. and they
2:18knew it was all about us being together.
2:20One u year for family day, I decided
2:24that I wanted to um take my kids to
2:27Everglades National Park and we had
2:30there was u there was six of us and so I
2:33rented two Johnboats. If you've not been
2:36to Everglades National Park, you can
2:37rent johnboats out there and go fishing.
2:40And so I rented two Johnboats and we had
2:42gone to Subway and got packed up with
2:44Subway sandwiches. You know the great
2:46place called Subway? Uh at that time it
2:49was one of my children's favorite
2:51restaurants.
2:53I can't speak on behalf of my wife, but
2:55right then we went to Subway and we
2:57loaded up with subs and chips and drinks
3:00and we went out to Everglades National
3:03Park and the day was glorious and
3:05beautiful. We rented two Johnboats and
3:08we decided to proceed deep into the
3:10Everglades and for 40 for 30 to 40
3:14minutes
3:15We went into the depth of the
3:17Everglades. We noticed on the way out
3:19that one boat was exponentially faster
3:22than the other boat and I was driving
3:24the fast boat and uh so we would always
3:27stop and see any gator that we came
3:29across and all the the excitement of
3:31being in the Everglades. You will never
3:33get bored out there. At least you better
3:35not. [clears throat]
3:36Uh and so we went all the way out to an
3:39island way out. I mean, not just if you
3:41know the map of the canals there, you
3:43know, there's two or three initially and
3:46then you can get into some fun stuff.
3:48So, we got out into the fun stuff and I
3:51pulled my Johnboat up on the land of
3:53Pioneer Me and the other boat finally
3:56come chugging up, you know, chugging up
3:59finally. And uh it pulled up and we got
4:01out on the island after I cleared it
4:03from all the reptilian creatures. And uh
4:07we got it cleared out and we opened up
4:10our sandwiches and began to eat. And out
4:13of nowhere,
4:16after watching a lot of working of the
4:19animal life
4:20and those peering creatures staring at
4:23me, I noticed a raindrop fell.
4:30I looked up and the sky looked as if it
4:32was bruised
4:35and the clouds were rolling. And so I
4:37told the kids, "Uh, we better um head
4:40back.
4:42And I told the other boat, which Jordan,
4:44my nephew, was driving with my two
4:46girls. I said, "You guys take the fast
4:49boat. Me and Melanie and Ethan will take
4:51the slowboat." Fast boat ran like a
4:54rabbit. Slow boat [snorts] had the
4:57engine of an electric razor.
5:08The silence had been interrupted by a
5:10boom
5:14and sliding from the horizon came a
5:16fastm moving storm.
5:19And uh I noticed
5:22the gators were sliding off the banks
5:24like they had a reservation at a special
5:26restaurant.
5:29The rain moved from a gentle nudge to a
5:32hammering
5:34>> pound. [snorts]
5:36The wind was blowing sideways and they
5:39took off in the scatboat.
5:43Ethan and my wife got in the boat with
5:45me lovingly. My wife would not abandon
5:47me at this moment. She did abandon me
5:49though because she had a hoodie
5:53and she pulled that black hoodie at the
5:55sight of her only mouth. That's all I
5:59could see was her mouth. She was facing
6:03me because the wind and the rain was so
6:05strong and the lightning. It was so bad.
6:09The rain was going sideways.
6:12The water beneath, if you've ever been
6:14to the Everglades, you know the water is
6:15black. Okay? I don't know where you find
6:17black water, but there the water is
6:19black.
6:21So, you've got the black water bene
6:23below and the black sky above and the
6:26lightning dancing and the thunder
6:28roaring. And
6:30>> I was going all that that little
6:32electric razor motor could go.
6:35>> Now, I'm not a I mean, I'm not a
6:38Catholic, but I almost prayed the
6:39rosary.
6:44In our text, we read a verse of
6:46scripture where David is writing his
6:48psalm.
6:49It comes across a verse of scripture
6:51that you and I have quoted many times.
6:53At least I have quoted it and misqued it
6:56because it says in that scripture, he
6:58describes all these things going on
7:00around him. And then he says, "The deep
7:04calleth unto the deep."
7:06And I through my years of being around
7:08the church have always thought, well
7:10that's the deeper things of God calling
7:12to the deeper things of God.
7:14>> When I hear the deep crith under the
7:16deep, it must mean we're having a really
7:19powerful church service. And those that
7:21are really not just wanting the shallow
7:23end, they're ready to kick in. But
7:26that's not
7:29what David's saying. It is literally a
7:32weather report.
7:33It is a man in a storm. It's not poetry.
7:37It is a desperate man crying out. And
7:40he's literally saying that the deep
7:42beneath him has conspired with the deep
7:44above him. And he cannot hardly tell
7:48which way is up. He said, "The noise of
7:50thy water spouts, thy billows, and thy
7:54waves." These are the things I'm talking
7:57about when I'm telling you that the deep
8:00is crying to the deep. It's not written
8:02from a library. It's written from a
8:04dangerous place.
8:06>> Have you ever heard when it rains it
8:08pours? Maybe you've said that
8:11David is in a place when he writes this
8:13psalm where everything has come apart.
8:16His son has brought a rebellion against
8:20him in the entire land and he has lost
8:24the love of Abselum. An animal had a a
8:28an animal spirit had come over Abselum
8:30to come and take the palace from David.
8:33David is running from Jerusalem. He had
8:36a best counselor, his wisest counselor.
8:39His closest friend, his name was Ahyhel.
8:42And Ahyhel had defected to Abselum's
8:46side of the ledger. Mphibicheth was a
8:51child of Saul that David had honored and
8:54allowed to live in the palace. And
8:56Mphibicheth had besa had had left David
8:59and abandoned David and gone to the uh
9:02uh side of Abselum. And while he's
9:05leaving Jerusalem, a man named Shimi,
9:08how about these names? Okay, you
9:10probably don't want to name your
9:11children these names. Okay. Uh
9:15Shimi comes up to David and begins
9:18throwing rocks at him and kicking dusts
9:20on him. [snorts] And David is so down.
9:25He literally says to his helpers who was
9:28willing to take Shimi out. He was
9:31willing to kill him. He said, "Don't
9:34touch him." It could be that he was sent
9:38by God. How low do you have to be
9:41>> to think that the people throwing rocks
9:43at you were sent by God?
9:46Now, I know you've heard this
9:48spiritualized and preached and
9:49proclaimed, but there are times we get
9:51the scripture and we twist it a little
9:53bit out of the place that it was written
9:55in. I heard about one pre saint who told
9:58her pastor she was so beaten down from
10:00family storms and from situations at
10:03work. She said, "I'm so tired, I'll
10:05almost be glad to get in the grave just
10:08to lie down and get in the casket. Maybe
10:10I can find some rest there." And then
10:13she thought a minute. He said, "But I'm
10:16afraid as soon as I get laid down, the
10:17Lord's going to come and I'm going to
10:18have to get back up."
10:24I mean, how low do you have to be
10:27>> when those who are throwing rocks at
10:29you, you say that could be of God? How
10:32low do you have to be when you say, "The
10:35deep beneath me is conspiring
10:39with the deep above me?" It starts out
10:42so good that we've made a song out of
10:44the opening verse of this song. As a
10:46deer panteth for the water, so my soul
10:50longeth after you. [singing]
10:53You alone are my heart's desire, and I
10:57long to worship you. Y'all ready? Sing
11:00it. You alone are my strength and my
11:04shield. To you alone may my spirit
11:09yield.
11:11It didn't feel like a song though when
11:13David wrote it
11:15>> because we pluck verses out of place
11:18because we like the way it sounds.
11:21But this preacher on this morning is
11:23trying to get you to pluck that song
11:25back into a place where you feel like
11:27everything beneath you is black water
11:30and everything above you is a bruised
11:32sky. And all you have is a weather
11:35report that says, "The deep is crying
11:39unto the deep and the noise of the sound
11:42of the waters are overwhelming me." And
11:46here's what David said. If you read it
11:47from the message, it says, "Uh, I'm
11:50eating tears for breakfast and I'm
11:52eating tears for supper. I go over and
11:55over it trying to figure out how did I
11:57get here? I'm emptying out the luggage
12:00of my life. I was always the one in
12:03front of the worshiping crowd. I was
12:05even the one leading the praisers. I was
12:08the one who was eager to arrive at the
12:11house of God. I'm the one who said I was
12:13glad when they said unto me, "Let us go
12:16to the house of the Lord." But now the
12:19chaos beneath me is crying to the chaos
12:21above me. Your swelling surf and your
12:24thundering breakers crash over and crush
12:27down on me. The storm below me is crying
12:30to the storm above me. And sometimes I
12:33ask God, "My rock solid God, why did you
12:38let me down? Why am I walking around in
12:41tears, harassed by my enemies?
12:46I've got three quick points to give you
12:48today and then we're going to pray.
12:50Point number one, we are in a storm in
12:53this hour. We are in an hour where we
12:56are trying to figure out as a nation who
12:59we are. Communism once tried to come
13:02into our nation and it was the 30s, the
13:0440s, and the 50s. It went down for a
13:07season, but now if you know the
13:09situations around about us, communism is
13:12trying to make its way back in different
13:14clothes into America. And communism is
13:18always anti- good because it needs you
13:20owing the government,
13:22>> not owing God. So communism has an
13:25agenda to remove God from the story and
13:28make the government your greatest
13:31provider. Right.
13:34>> This is like the day in scripture where
13:36the Bible says darkness
13:38came upon the face of the deep.
13:43>> Chaos you do not understand is talking
13:46to chaos you cannot control. The deep
13:49beneath is calling to the deep above.
13:52Are the communists taking over? Is China
13:54with its godless system of marking
13:56anybody who doesn't praise in the way
13:59that they prescribe? Are they taking
14:01over? What can stop these politicians
14:05who's trying to take over our nation
14:07away from godlessness? And that isn't
14:09new, but it is with a different uh
14:12garment nowadays. What is the new status
14:14quo? Our children wonder if there will
14:17be a job for them when they get older.
14:20Parents who are children are going back
14:22to school. We wonder what is artificial
14:24intelligent going to do to a learning
14:27system. Mama, is there anything on the
14:30screen that is real? And all of these
14:34things, nobody knows what is going on.
14:37And as a church, I have welcomed you to
14:39embrace tools. And artificial
14:42intelligence is one of those tools. But
14:44not even the professors, the academics,
14:47the politicians, or the power brokers
14:50know what is going to happen with this
14:53knowledge that is tumbling over itself.
14:56Every week there's a new discovery
15:00and all of that the very men building it
15:03have told Congress they don't fully
15:04understand the thing they have made and
15:07I know some in fact I talked to somebody
15:09who was a pastor friend of mine he said
15:11I I said how are you handling AI he said
15:13I don't even talk about it he said
15:15because I feel like my people are
15:16already under such stress out in the
15:18world that they want to have one place
15:19where they don't talk about it and maybe
15:21he's wiser than me but my feeling is is
15:23that I like using tools that's the
15:26reason and I have a phone. If you don't
15:27like tools, get rid of your phone. Uh if
15:30you don't appreciate great tools, get
15:32rid of your car. Uh I appreciate tools.
15:34And these are just new tools that we've
15:36got to learn how to operate in. I'll
15:38never forget when my uncle bought a nail
15:40gun. It was the first time that they
15:41ever had a nail gun. And he mocked
15:43anybody who used it because he said,
15:45"There's nothing like a claw hammer."
15:47And a bunch of uneducated, unskillful
15:49workers are the ones that need nail
15:51guns, those ridiculous things. And then
15:53it wasn't very long until I saw him
15:55going down the side of a house. Bam,
15:57bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam
15:59bam, bam, bam, bam, bam. He was the
16:01fastest man in all of town with a nail
16:03gun. I said, "Whatever happened to your
16:05claw hammer?"
16:10>> So, I am pro- tools. I think y'all have
16:14heard that word before.
16:16I am pro-tools. But we get tired of
16:19playground shenanigans that come with
16:21collateral damage. And we're always
16:23trying to see where's the damage coming
16:26from because my kids I care about. My
16:29marriage I care about. My job I care
16:31about. My income I care about. What are
16:34we going to do? And am I going to be
16:36displaced? I can't tell when a job's
16:38going to be displaced, where the job's
16:40going to be displaced to, when it's
16:42going to be. There's a fog in our
16:44forecast.
16:46I'll always remember when Ethan was at
16:49Bible college and he had gone to spend
16:51the weekend in uh Denver, Colorado and
16:54uh be with his cousins and they were
16:56putting on a pullpit conference in St.
16:58Louis, Missouri. And Ethan uh was
17:01driving from Denver to St. Louis and I
17:04was going to see brother and sister
17:05Lanciano. I was literally sitting in
17:07front of their house when my dad called
17:09me and my dad said, "David, we just got
17:11a call. Ethan's in trouble." I said,
17:13"Really?" I said, "How do you know?" He
17:15said, "Well, we we we we talked to him."
17:18Uh, I said, "He is? What has happened?"
17:20He said, "Well, the people said they're
17:22with the courthouse or the sheriff's
17:24office and that he was caught with a DUI
17:27and he's in jail and but but because of
17:30it, don't call anybody else. You alone
17:33can help us." And my dad had been he
17:36knew details. He knew specifics. He knew
17:38everything about Ethan's journey from
17:40Denver to Colorado. And I'm sitting
17:43there confused. What's going on? I
17:45couldn't comprehend it. I know sometimes
17:48kids can do something silly and if Ethan
17:50had done that, I would have been
17:51forgiving and loving and I would have
17:53bailed him out and I don't think I would
17:55have told anybody. Okay?
18:00>> Because I got people's back, baby.
18:05>> But I'll always remember I called Shawn
18:07Raven. Lisa Chet's here today, which I
18:09love you, Lisa. God's doing an amazing
18:11work in Lisa's life. She's one of the
18:13top top cops in in all of Fort
18:15Lauderdale. Uh well, she's not anymore,
18:18okay? So, don't chase her down with all
18:20of your needs. All right? Just let her
18:22be retired.
18:24But, uh I called Shawn, who at that time
18:26I believe was a captain with Dave, and I
18:28told him, I said, "Sean, listen. What's
18:29going on? Here's here's the thing." And
18:31he told me, he said, "David, it's a
18:34sham." I said, "How
18:38how did they talk to Ethan?" He said, '
18:40They have people that talk kind of like
18:42they're drunk, kind of like they're in a
18:45certain sound and and they can confuse
18:47the grandparents. They pray on them. I
18:49said, 'Well, how did they know he was
18:50going from where he was going? He said,
18:51"They do research. They spend their
18:53whole morning researching Facebook page,
18:56Instagram posts, and they know all these
18:58things,
18:59>> and it's it they are smart."
19:04What's that song by Michael Jackson?
19:07>> They're smooth. See, I'm so saved. I
19:10don't know these songs.
19:14I I I don't know these songs.
19:18Look at you, Dawn smiling at me.
19:21[panting]
19:22Smooth criminal.
19:27[cheering]
19:30>> Y'all act like you know that song.
19:36And that's not the last of it. And it's
19:38going to hit you, too.
19:40>> And when it comes, you're going to feel
19:41like, "My Lord, it's black water roing
19:44underneath me. It's a bruised sky
19:46boiling above me. I don't know which way
19:48to turn. The water's going sideways. The
19:51noise of the water spouts are all around
19:53me. I don't understand the billows that
19:55are overshadowing me. God, how long? How
19:58long? I'm eating tears for breakfast.
20:01I'm eating tears at lunch. I'm eating
20:03tears at dinnertime. [screaming] Oh
20:05Lord, how long? How long? How long
20:10the deep of your need comes to a place
20:13where you call out to the deep of the
20:15deep? And that's the title of my message
20:18is there's a deeper deep. There's a
20:20deepest deep because weather is
20:23momentary.
20:25The weather report can get you. Have you
20:26ever been listening on the radio? This
20:29is a test.
20:31This is a test of the mutual
20:33broadcasting system. But this is only a
20:36test.
20:40Y'all don't even know about these days.
20:42You don't even have radios. How many do
20:43not even know what I'm talking about?
20:45Raise your hand right now.
20:47>> Oh my goodness. I've got a pretty
20:50educated church. I've always known you
20:52were smart.
20:56This is a test.
20:59Pablo Cruz said it in 1977.
21:03What you gonna do when she says goodbye?
21:09What you gonna do when she is gone?
21:14Storms beneath, storms above, the
21:18billows over my head. Now, I know all of
21:20you are great at hiding your stuff. And
21:25you know, I'm not the preacher that
21:27always preaches about the stuff because
21:29the goodness of God does lead people.
21:32And the goodness of God doesn't always
21:33keep you in your stuff because blessing
21:35is phenomenal. Living for God is the
21:38best life that there is. He has come
21:40that I might have life and that more
21:42abundantly. We don't stay down when we
21:45come to him. He begins to elevate us up.
21:48But even in your place of blessing, you
21:51find out that there's heavier burdens in
21:54the middle of blessing.
21:56>> There's always a trial of adversity. But
21:59what people don't understand is how much
22:02greater is the trial of prosperity.
22:06>> And so when you come to that place and
22:08it feels like your word David is, you
22:10got to understand first of all that the
22:13storm of our hour was not meant to
22:15overwhelm you. Because my second point
22:17is you've got to move first
22:21and then God moves.
22:24You say, "No, no, no. You know, God
22:26ought to know. He knows all that I
22:27need." No. You better read the fine
22:29print of the spirit. Read the fine print
22:31in the Bible because the Bible says all
22:33things work together to for the good to
22:36them that love God.
22:38>> What? To who? To them that love God. All
22:42things work together for the good to
22:43them who love God and are called
22:45according to his purpose. You move first
22:48and then he moves. If my people,
22:52>> if my people which are called by my
22:54name, you move shall humble themselves.
22:57You move and pray. You move. Then I will
23:01hear from heaven. Then I will forgive
23:03their sin. Then will I heal their land.
23:06You move. Then God move. Delight thyself
23:09also in the Lord.
23:13>> There is a truth in this house.
23:16>> People have worshiped today that are in
23:19the middle of the bottom of the valley.
23:21But they have learned if I delight
23:24myself also in the Lord, then he shall
23:26give me the desires of my heart. You
23:29move, then he moves. I'm not waiting to
23:32praise him until I have the praise
23:35report. I know that I have in my hands
23:38the capacity to create a praise report.
23:42Because I know when the deep beneath me
23:45conspires with the deep above me, it is
23:48not the final message I am to hear. I
23:52have been young,
23:54>> but now I'm old, but I've never seen the
23:58righteous forsaken,
24:00>> nor his seed [laughter] beckon to break.
24:02Call unto me [screaming]
24:04>> and I will answer thee. You move, then
24:08God moves. That's the reason at the
24:09conclusion of every service we have an
24:11altar call. And I know it's not the
24:13custom in a lot of Christianity today.
24:15And I know your flesh twists and turns
24:17to not ever get in the come down here.
24:20But I want to proclaim to you there's a
24:21reason we do it. Because you move, then
24:24God moves. You've got to let him know.
24:27For whosoever shall call on the name of
24:29the Lord shall be saved. You call and
24:33then he answers. But as many as received
24:35him, to them gave he. I need some folks
24:39that are here to receive today. I need
24:42some folks that are willing to be hungry
24:45today. I need some people who are
24:48willing to say in their spirit, I have
24:51come to bless the Lord. I will bless the
24:55Lord at
24:57[cheering]
24:58>> when
25:00>> when
25:02>> you see the pattern. God is not a
25:06vending machine, nor is he a slot
25:09machine.
25:11>> He's a father.
25:12>> And a covenant always must be signed
25:15with two signatures. You move first,
25:18then God moves. God told Elijah in first
25:21Kings 17, "Get thee to the brook,
25:24Cherith. And there at the brook, I have
25:28commanded the ravens to feed thee
25:31there." Many people don't see the there,
25:35but there's a there there. Get thee to
25:37the brook Cherith. There were ravens
25:40flying with the GPS programming system.
25:44The ravens were not circling the whole
25:46map looking for a hungry prophet. If
25:48Elijah had set up camp anywhere but the
25:51brook Cherith, he'd have watched the
25:54catering company fly over because they
25:57had one address. The there God said to
26:00be at in the middle of your deep below
26:03going crazy with the deep above. God
26:06said, "I know the way that you take. Ah,
26:10and I will be finished with you one day.
26:13And when I am through with you, God will
26:16turn you to gold. The algorithms cannot
26:19change your reality. Sister Elms, come
26:21musicians. The responsibility of loving
26:24God is the price of relationship. It's
26:26not a small thing to move first. It's
26:30the only thing. It's the only thing.
26:33We're not waiting to be safe. Delight
26:37thyself in the Lord. Commit thy way unto
26:41the Lord. Psalm said, "Freten not thy
26:44selves because of evildoers." In that
26:48psalm, three times David said, "Freten
26:50not thyself." You know why he had to say
26:52that?
26:54We do it
26:56out there in the Everglades
26:58with that little motor. I'm telling you,
27:01I tried to make the wisest decision I
27:03could make. Here I am, big bed dead, and
27:08I have the slowest one. At least I gave
27:09the fast one to the others. They were
27:11gone. Scadaddius,
27:14is that a word? Scuadi.
27:15>> Scuaddle.
27:15>> Scuaddle.
27:16>> Scuaddle.
27:18>> I make words.
27:20>> Scuadle.
27:22My wife was looking at me through that
27:24hole
27:26and Ethan was hunkered down
27:29>> and I had to be strong looking where we
27:32were going.
27:34>> I don't know how.
27:34>> And I'm telling you what, I literally
27:36had to put on sunglasses so I could keep
27:39my eye open. It was that cold and hard
27:42coming down on me. I was trying to get
27:45there and I was saying, "Keep plowing,
27:47little engine. Keep plowing." Then
27:49lightning struck and I thought, "You
27:51need to get to land." And I thought,
27:53>> "You're no safer on land in these
27:56Everglades than you are in this water
27:58out here. It's better for you to keep
28:01chugging and get home in Jesus name."
28:03You know what I found out in that boat?
28:06I thought it was a family day and I
28:08thought we only had six, but I found out
28:10that there were seven because when I
28:13finally got back to Port Everglades and
28:16those gators that I had passed were fine
28:19in that storm, they were loving it.
28:23[groaning]
28:26>> It was
28:28>> You feel like you're doing that right
28:29now?
28:32You got a super fast car outside, but
28:35when your life shows up,
28:37>> Jesus,
28:42>> you're trying so hard, but
28:46>> the business
28:51trying to restore that relationship with
28:53your boy.
28:55[snorts]
28:59You're trying to keep the family.
29:08How long, oh Lord?
29:12You know what David does? This is my
29:15last point and pray
29:19twice. He says the same thing in this
29:21psalm.
29:27He interrogates himself.
29:30He does not deny the deep. He doesn't
29:33deny the storm.
29:37He doesn't deny his depression, his
29:39despondency.
29:43He just
29:45talked to himself.
29:49Why art thou cast down, oh soul?
29:54If it it seems like he's manic if you
29:57read the whole psalm as one because he
30:00says something cheerful and then he's
30:01right back in it.
30:04He's right back in that low spot.
30:09Midway through he says, "Hope thou in
30:11[screaming] God."
30:14He gets to the last verse and he said,
30:18"Why art thou cast down, oh my soul?
30:22Why art thou disqued in me? In other
30:25words, you're really being quiet down
30:27there.
30:30And then all of a sudden, you're
30:31yelling.
30:35And then he said, "Hope thou in God, for
30:38I shall yet
30:42praise him.
30:44I shall yet."
30:48Some of y'all need to come to this altar
30:50today and drag all of your
30:54bruised sky
30:57and pull all of your swamp water
31:02up here with you
31:04and say, "I shall yet."
31:08Praise God.
31:11With LXM, we have um speech. In fact,
31:14they've got to present tomorrow because
31:15they preach in a few weeks. And I I get
31:18them to work on annunciation.
31:20They've got to say things like the tip
31:23of the tongue, the lips and the teeth.
31:25The tip of the tongue, the lips and the
31:26teeth. They have to say things that help
31:30them learn and speak clearly. You know,
31:35New York. You need New York. [music] You
31:36know, you need new unique New York.
31:42But one thing I make them say that is
31:45deeper than just
31:48a tongue exercise.
31:52Whether the weather is cold, whether the
31:54weather is hot, we'll be together,
31:56whatever the weather, whether we like it
31:57or not.
32:04And while you're figuring out the
32:05weathers,
32:08God is the deepest deep.
32:13And he's saying,
32:15"Will you come
32:18and hope in me?
32:20All your things that are going sideways,
32:23upside down, royally and boiling,
32:27will you make a [music] new consecration
32:30to me?
32:32Shall we stand?"
32:38The Hebrew children didn't know what was
32:40going on when they were thrown into the
32:41fiery furnace.
32:44You know the story. You Bible readers
32:47really know it well. If you don't bow
32:50and bend and worship the image, we're
32:54going to put you into a furnace that is
32:56heated seven times hotter.
33:01And they told the king Nebuchadnezzar,
33:04"Oh king,
33:07we're not afraid to answer you on this
33:09matter.
33:11Our
33:13God is able
33:15to deliver us.
33:19But if he doesn't,
33:21I'm still not going to bow.
33:23And you know what they found out in the
33:26fiery furnace?
33:29The furnace did not destroy them.
33:33>> The furnace introduced them.
33:38>> They went in just three Hebrew children.
33:41They came out servants of [music] the
33:44most high God.
33:47>> I'm open this altar today to anybody
33:50who's willing to say,
33:52"I need the Lord in the sunshine hour
33:56and I need the Lord when the storm
33:57clouds roll. [music] I need him. I'm
34:01coming to you, Lord. I will say to my
34:04soul, hope thou [singing and music] in
34:08God." If you've not received the Holy
34:11Ghost, come on down. Come close. Come
34:13close. Come close. There's going to be
34:15[music] a lot of people that are wanting
34:16to come to the altar today. Come down as
34:19close as you can. Come as close as
34:21[music] you can. If you need to sit,
34:23find a seat. But everybody that can come
34:25as close as you can. [music] We want to
34:27fill this altar with this many of those
34:30who are willing to bring the deep that
34:34is beneath you and the deep that is
34:38above you and say, "Oh God, that
34:41preacher can't pray it for me."
34:44Oh Lord, I'm not too proud to tell you.
34:49I've got to have you more than I've ever
34:51needed you [music] before in my life.
34:54And I'm here to tell you, I'm going to
34:58move, Lord, so you can move.
35:01>> I'm [singing] going to call out so you
35:04can respond.
35:06I'm going to hope in you.
